The end user has a prior license to the programs that are contained on this CD-ROM. 2. The CD-ROM is being provided and may be used only as a backup copy. 3. The terms and conditions for use of the programs are governed by the existing end user license agreements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PREINSTALLED SOFTWARE RECOVERY ATTENTION: The software contained on the diskette and the CD-ROM in this package is to be used only for restoring a damaged hard disk drive on IBM ThinkPad computers. Hardware or software damage might occur if the operating system is installed on other computers. REQUIREMENTS To use this CD to restore a hard drive, you must have: 1. ThinkPad Preinstalled Software Recovery Boot Diskette. You MUST build the Recovery Boot Disktte from the Recovery CD-ROM, or use the diskette provided by IBM. Follow these steps to create the Recovery Boot Diskette. a. Insert the Recovery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. b. Change to the LOADSOFT directory on the CD-ROM drive. c. Type BUILDDSK and press ENTER. d. Insert a blank 1.44MB diskette into the diskette drive, and press Y to continue. 2. ThinkPad Preinstalled Software Recovery CD-ROM. 3. Drive A of the ThinkPad computer as its startup drive. 4. One of the following: a. IBM DOCK I. b. IBM DOCK II using DOCK I SCSI CD-ROM drive c. IBM DOCK II using (IBM) ISA CD-ROM drive d. IBM DOCK II using (IBM) IDE CD-ROM drive e. 760LD (Replace internal diskette drive with CD-ROM drive) f. Parallel-port cable connection (INTERLNK) between a computer with a CD-ROM drive (host) and the computer to be restored (target). The host computer must have DOS 6.0 (or later) or Windows 95 installed and be connected to the target computer with an INTERLNK- or LapLink-compatible cable. g. IBM-supplied parallel port CD-ROM drive. (US only) ------------------------------------- RECOVERING YOUR PREINSTALLED SOFTWARE ATTENTION: All data in the reformatted partitions on the hard drive will be deleted. Be sure that you have backed up all of your data before running this program. After you have recovered your hard drive, you may need to reinstall your application programs. 1. Start the Recovery Process. a. Make sure the PC is powered off. b. Insert the Recovery diskette into drive A. c. Power on the PC. The program will start automatically. 2. Select the Configuration for Your Recovery Process. a. Let the Recovery program find your internal CD-ROM Drive. Your CD-ROM drive must be functional and recognized by your PC in order for this process to work. The Recovery program will attempt to find your CD-ROM drivers on your hard disk (for example, IBMCDROM.SYS or IBMTPCD.SYS). Selecting this option will not activate drivers associated with parallel ports or SCSI chains. If the Recovery program cannot detect your CD-ROM drive, press any key to continue. Go to Step 2b. b. Select your CD-ROM drive from a list. From this menu you can select to reinstall the software from multiple CD-ROM drive configurations. Check your hardware's documentation if you are not absolutely sure of your configuration. Select how you want to restore your preinstalled software. You can select: 1) IBM DOCK I. 2) IBM DOCK II using DOCK I SCSI CD-ROM drive. 3) IBM DOCK II using (IBM) ISA CD-ROM drive. 4) IBM DOCK II using (IBM) IDE CD-ROM drive. 5) 760CD/755CD/760LD/365CD (Replace internal diskette drive with CD-ROM drive). During the installation process you will be prompted to replace your diskette drive with your CD-ROM drive. (DO NOT TURN POWER OFF). Place the Recovery CD-ROM in the drive. Then, at the current prompt type LOAD. 6) Host to ThinkPad via parallel cable (INTERLNK). 7) IBM SUPPLIED PARALLEL PORT CD-ROM drive. Connect the parallel cable port to the ThinkPad and to the Parallel IN port of of the CD-ROM drive supplied by IBM. Attach the power adapter to the CD-ROM drive and plug into an outlet. (US only) 3. Format the Drive. Before you can recover the preinstalled software, the hard drive partition that contains the operating system must be formatted. This program will reformat the entire hard drive, or format only the drive C partition (if you have previously partitioned your hard drive). ATTENTION: All data in the reformatted partitions on the hard drive will be deleted. Be sure that you have backed up all of your data before running this program. After you have recovered your hard drive, you may need to reinstall your application programs. Select the appropriate choice. a. Format the entire hard drive and recover the preinstalled software. This selection will format your entire hard drive. Every file on the hard drive will be deleted, all partitions removed, and the preinstalled software will be reinstalled on your hard drive. b. Format drive C only and recover the preinstalled software. This selection will format drive C only and recover the preinstalled software. If you hard drive has multiple partitions, only the data on drive C will be deleted. 4. Recover the Preinstalled Software. Once your selection is made, the Recovery program will begin to initialize. When the system returns to the A: prompt, restart your system by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. When prompted, press C to continue with formatting or N to go to a DOS prompt. If you are performing the recovery process from an internal CD-ROM drive in the target computer, the recovery of the preinstalled software will be completed automatically. A message will be displayed when the recovery process is completed. If you are performing the recovery process using INTERLNK, pressing C will continue the formatting and also verify the connection of the INTERLNK cable between the host computer and the target computer. If the connection is good, the blue INTERLNK screen will appear on the target computer with the drive letters assigned. Continue with Step 4a. a. Recover the Software Using INTERLNK. Before continuing, ensure the CD-ROM drive in the host computer is working, and the INTERLNK cable is properly connected to the parallel ports of the target and host computers. If your host computer has DOS or DOS with Windows 3.1 installed, go to Step 4b. If your host computer has Windows 95 installed, go to Step 4c. b. Recover Using a Host Computer with DOS or DOS with Windows 3.1. To recover your preinstalled software from a host computer using DOS or DOS with Windows 3.1: 1) Be sure the blue INTERLNK screen is on the target computer with drive letters assigned. 2) On the host computer, change to the CD-ROM drive. 3) Type HOST and press ENTER. The host computer will restart. 4) After the host computer restarts, if you are using Windows, exit from Windows. 5) At the DOS command prompt, change to the LOADSOFT directory on the CD-ROM drive. 6) On the target computer, press any key to start the INTERLNK session. 7) On the host computer, type LOAD and press ENTER. 8) When the completion message is displayed, on the target computer press ALT+F4 to exit from INTERLNK. ATTENTION: You must press Alt+F4 to exit from the INTERLNK session in order for the recovery process to complete successfully. When you have exited from INTERLNK, some batch files will be executed. c. Recover Using a Host Computer with Windows 95. To recover your preinstalled software from a host computer using Windows 95: 1) Be sure the blue INTERLNK screen is on the target computer. 2) On the host computer, click on START in Windows 95. 3) Go to PROGRAMS and click on MS DOS PROMPT. 4) Change to your CD-ROM drive; type HOST and press ENTER. If changes are made to the CONFIG.SYS file on the host computer, they will be displayed. 5) Type EXIT to close the window on the host computer. 6) On the target computer, press any key to start the INTERLNK session. 7) On the host computer, click on START and then SHUT DOWN. 8) From the Shutdown Window, click on RESTART THE COMPUTER and select YES. The Host computer will restart. 9) Click on START; go to PROGRAMS and click on MS DOS PROMPT. 10) At the prompt, type D:LOAD and press ENTER. 11) Make sure the Recovery CD-ROM is in the CD-ROM drive of the host computer; then press Y. 12) When the completion message is displayed, on the target computer press ALT+F4 to exit from INTERLNK. ATTENTION: You must press Alt+F4 to exit from the INTERLNK session in order for the recovery process to complete successfully. When you have exited from INTERLNK, some batch files will be executed. 5. When the Recovery Process is Complete. The first time you restart the ThinkPad, the preinstalled software will configure itself. If you have a ThinkPad CD model and are using the internal drive to reinstall, you must have the internal CD-ROM drive installed the first time you restart the ThinkPad to insure that the preinstalled software configures itself properly.
