Installing Windows 95 on your PS/1 This article describes how to install Windows 95 on PS/1 systems. Aptiva owners should download the file W95APT.DSK from the IBM download library (919-517-0001) prior to installing Windows 95. If you wish to install Windows 95 on an IBM PS/1 system, here is some information to ease the installation. 1. System Requirements: Windows 95 requires a 386DX/20 or faster processor, 4MB of Random Access Memory (RAM), VGA or better graphics, and up to 90MB of hard drive space. These are the minimum requirements; however, Microsoft recommends at least 8MB of RAM for Windows 95. Note: Windows 95 will not run well on PS/1 systems with the 386SX processor. 2. Getting the system ready for Windows 95: Before you install Windows 95 you will want to get the system ready prior to doing the installation process. Some of the settings in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files have to be changed to remove programs that conflict with the Windows 95 installation process. First, disable any anti-virus software that you may be using. The PS/1 came with an anti-virus program and if this is the one that you use, you can disable it through the Virus Checking section of PS/1 Fitness. If you are using a different anti-virus program, follow the directions that came with the program to disable it. Next, open the System Configuration Editor which can be found in the Accessories group of Windows 3.1. This will open four files. The first file will be the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Remove the following lines from this file: C:\PS1TOOLS\HWCHECK C:\PS1TOOLS\START.BAT (The second line above may be C:\PS1TOOLS\PS1START.BAT in some systems.) These files are not needed by Windows 95. Open the File menu and choose Save. Next, the HIGHSCAN statement needs to be removed from the EMM386 line in your CONFIG.SYS file. - From the System Configuration Editor, click on the Title Bar for the CONFIG.SYS file - Near the top of the CONFIG.SYS file you will find a line that reads: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE HIGHSCAN NOEMS ..... Remove the word HIGHSCAN, open the File menu, and choose Save. PS/1 Exclusive Software: Some of the software that was installed on your system by IBM will not work under Windows 95. Utilities such as Your Software, Display Select, Personal Desktop, and Backup/Restore will not function and may harm Windows 95 if they are used. The PS/1 TOOLS group in Windows can be deleted since this group contains most of the affected software. You can also delete the PS1TOOLS and WELCOME directories on your hard drive. NOTE: If your system is equipped with the Smart Energy System, you may want to keep the file PS1PFILE, found in the PS1TOOLS directory. This file is necessary for the Windows 95 Suspend feature. Exit Windows and re-boot your system. At the C:\ prompt type WIN and press [Enter]. Install Windows 95 using the instructions provided by Microsoft. If you have any questions about this procedure, please post a note in the appropriate topic or forum area. Be sure to include your DOS version and your model number (i.e., 2155-G82).
