The MicroProse name has become synonymous with sophistication, quality, realism, detail and playability. Its award-winning products are available nationally and internationally through distributors, retailers and mass merchandisers. A Tradition of Excellence From its start, MicroProse became known for its high-quality simulation software targeted at a sophisticated adult audience. MicroProse is unique in the entertainment software industry, using primarily an in-house software development staff. Development depends on a "team" approach with professional game designers, programmers, sound engineers and screen graphics artists working on specific projects. Producing a new title--GUNSHIP, for example--can take as long as eight man-years over a three year period for initial development and conversion to various computer systems, and represents a multi-million dollar development and marketing investment. MicroProse International In 1986, MicroProse established a United Kingdom subsidiary, MicroProse Software, Ltd., to manufacture and market its products throughout Europe. MicroProse U.K. has grown rapidly and now employs more than 75 persons. Six other U.S. firms, noting the success of MicroProse's marketing strategy, joined the team and signed joint ventures to market their products overseas. The U.K. subsidiary was recently named "Software House of the Year" in England. MicroProse also recently opened offices in Paris and Frankfurt, with additional operations planned for Scandinavia in the near future. MicroProse U.K. operates in Japan through its offices in Tokyo. An Unusual Beginning MicroProse was established in 1982 by Bill Stealey and Sid Meier. Meier and Stealey, both employees of General Instruments Corporation at the time, were playing an aerial combat arcade game, Red Baron, while attending a conference in Las Vegas. Stealey, a former jet fighter pilot with experience in flight simulators, complained about the quality of the game after losing to Meier, a computer programmer who won by analyzing the game's algorithms. Meier said, "I can design a better game in a week." Stealey retorted, "If you can make it, I can sell it." Meier didn't complete the game in a week...it took two months and was titled HELLCAT ACE. Soon Bill discovered that with quality products he was an excellent salesman.
