Softpaq Solution: SP0895 File Name: VOL_FIX.EXE Title: Volume label problems with license diskette for SmartStart (Aug rel) _______________________________________________________________________ CATEGORY: Software EFFECTIVITY DATE: 8/26/94 PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq Server products using SmartStart (Aug rel.) for NT 3.1 manual installation path OPERATING SYSTEM: MS-DOS 3.3 DESCRIPTION: VOL_FIX.EXE will fix the volume label of the license diskette to enable you to run NON-SmartStart NT 3.1 installs. When installing Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 from Compaq CD (August 1994 SmartStart) through the manual path (called a NON-SmartStart install at the Main SmartStart Screen,) the user is prompted for the license diskette (to enter activation key). However, the license diskette which comes with the SmartStart package (red) is not accepted, the computer beeps and the message to insert the license diskette continues to appear. The problem is with the volume label on the production (red) license diskettes. The volume label is just a directory entry with a "volume label" bit set in its attribute byte. These license diskettes have the "archive" bit set in the attribute byte as well as the "volume label" bit. The license diskettes used in test have only the "volume label" bit set and that is what the code checks for, therefor, it never finds the label on the production license diskettes. SOLUTION: 1. Relabelling the production license diskette will clear the "archive" bit and allow the code to find the label, thus accepting the license diskette. To do this the customer should enter the following command from a DOS prompt on a Windows NT PC, with the license diskette in a diskette drive: LABEL A: CPQPRLD0794 2. Using a utility, such as Norton Utilities, remove the archive bit from the license diskette. 3. Use SP0895.exe. This consists of an executable called VOL_FIX.EXE which can be run from a DOS command prompt under MS-DOS 5.0 or 6.2. HOW TO USE: 1) Create a temporary directory on your hard disk...(C:\MD TEMP). 2) Then change to that directory...(C:\CD TEMP) 3) Then copy SP0895.EXE from the SoftPaq diskette... (C:\TEMP\copy a:\sp0895.exe). 4) Then run SP0895.EXE. 5) The utility VOL_FIX.EXE should now exist in the temp directory. To use VOL_FIX.EXE place your SmartStart license diskette in either A: or B: and run VOL_FIX.EXE...(C:\TEMP\VOL_FIX A:) Make sure that the write protect tab is not set. After running VOL_FIX.EXE you will be able to run the NON-SmartStart install properly.
