Softpaq Solution: SP1069 Filename: DETECT Title: Compaq Floating Point Detection Utilities for SCO UNIX on Pentium Version: 1.0 _______________________________________________________________________ CATEGORY: Software Solution / Servers, Desktop EFFECTIVITY DATE: 12-22-94 PRODUCTS AFFECTED: All Compaq Products OPERATING SYSTEM: - SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Version 4.0 with Maintenance Supplement 4.2 - SCO Open Desktop Release 3.0 or SCO Open Desktop Lite 3.0, SCO Open Server Enterprise 3.0, SCO Open Server Network 3.0 - SCO MPX Release 3.0 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: Any Compaq System running one of the above operating systems. SUPERSEDES: none DESCRIPTION: The Compaq Floating Point Detection Software for SCO UNIX is a collection of utilities and a device driver to allow customers to determine whether their server applications are affected by the Intel Pentium floating point flaw. The Compaq software tools, developed for the SCO UNIX operating system, report the number of overall floating point operations as well as the number of floating point divide operations executed by the customer's application. Using this information, a customer can make an informed decision regarding the level of exposure to the Intel Pentium floating point unit (FPU) flaw (i.e., based on the number of floating point divide operations performed by the application). The Compaq software tools force the use of software emulation libraries. The applications behave as if they were executing on a processor without a floating point unit (X86 SX). HOW TO USE: 1. After downloading the SoftPaq, copy it to an empty directory and change to that directory. If downloaded in zipped format (.ZIP), unzip the file to create an executable: PKUNZIP SP1069 2. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file to unbind the primary files: SP1069 [ENTER] The following files should be created: DETECT._01 QRST.EXE README 3. Obtain one (1) formatted 1.44 MB diskette. 4. Create the diskette image by running this command at the DOS prompt: QRST [ENTER] 5. The "Select Diskettes in this set" prompt appears. Choose the highlighted, default selection "Do ALL of the diskettes in this set" by pressing ENTER. 6. The "Enter Destination Drive" prompt is given. (Either A or B will be included in the prompt, depending on where your 3.5 inch diskette drive is located.) If the drive shown in the prompt is not the one you wish to use, change the value by pressing either A or B. At this point, you can optionally print a label (if your printer is attached) by pressing F9. Press ENTER to accept the diskette drive letter. The same screen will reappear. Press ENTER again to extract and decompress the diskette image. 7. The "Ready to copy diskette" prompt appears. It is asking for one 1.44 MB diskette. Verify that you have a formatted 1.44 MB diskette in the appropriate disk drive and press ENTER to begin diskette creation. IMPORTANT: Only a 1.44 MB diskette can be used, other types of media cannot be substituted. 8. A counter box will be displayed during creation showing status. The number of cylinders will count up to 80. 9. When QRST has completed, it will exit back to DOS. At this point, the Compaq Floating Point Detection Software diskette has been created and is ready to use. Please read all information in the README file before installing the utility. NOTE: You can verify that you have valid installation diskettes by using the UNIX sum -r command: sum -r /dev/fd0 The following sum value should be displayed: 55754
