Softpaq Solution: SP1177 File Name: LOGFIX.EXE Title: Fix Win NT 3.5 Setup Problem in SmartStart manual method Version: 2.0 or 2.01 CATEGORY: Software Solutions / Servers EFFECTIVITY DATE: 3/15/95 PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq Server products using SmartStart (2.0 or 2.1) for Windows NT 3.5 manual installation path OPERATING SYSTEM: MS Windows NT 3.5 or higher. DESCRIPTION: When installing Microsoft Windows NT 3.5 from Compaq CD (2.0 or 2.01) through the manual path (called a NON-SmartStart install at the Main SmartStart Screen), the SETUP.LOG file is not edited properly to protect COMPAQ specific files from MicroSoft updates or service packs. This could lead to problems when an update or a service pack is installed, caused by MicroSoft files being copied over COMPAQ files. LOGFIX.EXE will correct this by editing the Compaq specific file entries in the SETUP.LOG file located in the REPAIR directory under your Windows NT install directory. This program must be run from a DOS prompt in Windows NT 3.5. HOW TO USE: 1. After downloading the SoftPaq, copy it to an empty directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. If downloaded in zipped format (.ZIP), unzip the file to create an executable: PKUNZIP SP1177 2. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file to unbind the primary files: SP1177 [ENTER] The following files should be created: SETUPLOG.INI LOGFIX.EXE 3. To use LOGFIX.EXE make sure that your are currently running the copy of Windows NT that was installed with SmartStart 2.0 or 2.01 (this applies to multiple boot partitioned systems). From the directory containing LOGFIX.EXE and the data file SETUPLOG.INI, run LOGFIX. You will then be able to run updates and service packs safely.
