Softpaq Solution: SP1415 File Name: NPFC Title: NetWare Programs From Compaq (NPFC-J) Version: 2.57J Rev.A Language: Japanese CATEGORY: Drivers / Servers EFFECTIVE DATE: 10-26-95 PRODUCTS AFFECTED: All OPERATING SYSTEM: N/A SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: N/A KEYWORDS: DRIVERS NETFLEX NETWARE NETWORK NOVELL NPFC ODI SBACKUP SCSI SERVER SOFTPAQ SUPERSEDES: SP1299 DESCRIPTION: This SoftPaq is for Japanese products, and cannot be run in United States mode. It contains the files to create the NetWare Programs From Compaq Diskette and the NetWare Programs From Compaq Supplement Diskette. The NPFC and NPFC Supplement diskettes contain NetWare drivers, NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs), and support information to optimize the performance of NetWare on Compaq servers. The readme files for NPFC and NPFC Supplement are available as WINHELP files. To obtain the WINHELP files, download SoftPaq SP1418. The WHATSNEW.RDM file, found on each NPFC diskette, contains detailed information about the updates, new features, and fixes in this version. Some of the highlights include: README FILE UPDATES - Information for Compaq UPS (CPQUPS.NLM), System Management (CPQHLTH.NLM), and the Recovery Agent (CPQRSO.NLM) can now be found in one file, SRV_MGMT.RDM. The HEALTH.RDM and CPQUPS.RDM files have been removed. FWS2ASPI.SYS V1.02 UPDATES - The FWS2ASPI.SYS driver, in conjunction with FWS2CD.SYS, replaces the CDC710.SYS, WS2ASPI.SYS, AND WS2CD.SYS drivers. Loading these drivers once provides support for up to 8 CD-ROM controllers in a DOS environment. For instructions on how to load FWS2ASPI.SYS and FWS2CD.SYS see INSTALL.RDM. FWS2CD.SYS V1.00 UPDATES - The FWS2CD.SYS driver, in conjunction with FWS2ASPI.SYS, replaces the CDC710.SYS, WS2ASPI.SYS, and WS2CD.SYS drivers. Loading these drivers once provides support for up to 8 CD-ROM controllers in a DOS environment. For instructions on how to load FWS2ASPI.SYS and FWS2CD.SYS see INSTALL.RDM. CDC710.SYS, WS2ASPI.SYS, AND WS2CD.SYS REMOVED - The CDC710.SYS, WS2ASPI.SYS, AND WS2CD.SYS drivers have been replaced by the FWS2ASPI.SYS and FWS2CD.SYS set of drivers. The FWS2ASPI.SYS and FWS2CD.SYS drivers provide support for the use of CD-ROM in a DOS environment. CPQNF3.COM V1.10 UPDATES - CPQNF3.COM supports the NetFlex-3 Controllers in a DOS ODI Client environment. The base module can be configured with either the Compaq 10Base-T UTP/BNC, 100VG-AnyLAN, or 10/100Base-TX UTP module. See the NET_DOS.RDM file for more information about this driver. - Enhanced the driver to detect Transmit Timeouts. This features now allows the hardware to be reset and continue when a transmit timeout occurs. - Fixed a problem that may have caused slow performance on some systems that were using the NetFlex-3/E 100VG-AnyLAN module. - The driver was updated to improve the performance of the NetFlex-3 Controller when using the 10/100Base-TX UTP module. Performance is improved and collisions are minimized when used on very busy multiple-repeater 100Base-T networks. CPQNF3.SYS V1.00 UPDATES - CPQNF3.SYS v1.00 supports the NetFlex-3 Controllers in an OS/2 ODI environment, which can be configured with either the Compaq 10Base-T UTP/BNC, 100VG-AnyLAN, or 10/100Base-TX UTP module. See the NET_OS2.RDM for more information about this driver. CPQNF3.LAN V1.22 UPDATES - The driver was updated to eliminate a possible lockup condition that could occur when using a NetFlex-3/E Controller in a NetWare server with the AppleTalk protocol. - If the driver aborted during the load process due to a NetWare error condition, the error message reported on the console might have been unreadable. The driver was updated to properly print the error message in all cases. - The driver was updated to improve the performance of the NetFlex-3 Controller when using the 10/100Base-TX UTP module. Performance is improved and collisions are minimized when used on very busy multiple-repeater 100Base-T networks. - The driver was updated to properly set the Line Speed field in the MLID configuration table during the initialization process. Previously the field was sometimes set incorrectly when using the 10/100Base-TX UTP module. This change only affects network management applications that access the MLID configuration table. - When performing benchmarks on 100Base-TX LAN adapters using NetWare, it is important to obtain the latest VLM software from Novell. Older versions of the VLM software have difficulty operating efficiently on heavily loaded 100Base- TX networks due to problems in the send delay algorithm used when collisions occur. This will cause a NetWare server's CPU utilization to increase dramatically and performance to drop when running tests using high performance 100Base-TX adapters. The updated VLM software uses a new algorithm that improves performance and significantly lowers the server's CPU utilization during tests. If using a network analyzer, the effect can be seen in the "Send Delay Time" field of the NCP header of client burst request packets. At the time of this publication the latest VLM version is v1.20 REV B BETA 1.0 (950726). The latest IPXODI.COM is v3.02 (950719). These versions are not released; therefore you will have to contact Novell to obtain them. - When operating on a 100Base-TX network, Compaq NetFlex-3 10/100TX Controllers are capable of transmitting bursts of packets using the minimum interpacket gap allowed by the specification. Minimizing interpacket gap allows for very high levels of performance. Along with high levels of performance, you will see an increased level of collisions. This is a natural occurrence given the speed of transmission. Do not be alarmed if the levels of collision statistics are higher for the NetFlex-3/TX Controller than you are used to experiencing. 100Base-TX controllers that utilize a longer interpacket gap will show fewer collisions and slower performance when compared to the Compaq NetFlex-3 10/100TX Controller. CPQETHER.LAN V3.03, CPQ2ETH.LAN V3.03, CPQTOKEN.LAN V3.03, AND CPQ2TOK.LAN V3.03 UPDATES - Added support for certification of all drivers using the new Novell certification test suite, TESTCON. UPDATED ODI TSM AND MSM FILES FROM NOVELL - ETHERTSM.NLM v2.55, TOKENTSM.NLM v2.50, MSM31X.NLM v2.50, MSM.NLM v2.50 now ship on NPFC 2.57. CPQRSO.NLM V1.01 UPDATES - CPQRSO.NLM v1.01 fixes a potential ABEND that may have occurred if the driver was unloaded while communicating with the secondary server. - CPQRSO.NLM v1.01 fixes a problem that occurred when using the driver with NetWare 3.12. The connection between servers was broken during initialization and caused an error message to display on the console. Communication between the servers was re-established within one minute. HOW TO USE: 1. Obtain two formatted 1.44 MB diskettes. 2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP1415.EXE. 3. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file: SP1415 [ENTER] You will be prompted to place the formatted 1.44 MB diskettes into a diskette drive to create the diskettes. 4. After the diskettes are created, you may delete the downloaded file SP1415.EXE if you wish. 5. Run README.COM on one of the newly created diskettes for an NPFC overview and installation instructions.
