Softpaq Solution: SP1458 File Name: NETAMD.INF Title: Deskpro XL Windows 95 Patch for Network LED Version: N/A CATEGORY: Software Solutions / Desktops EFFECTIVE DATE: 02 January 1996 PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq Desktop XL OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 95 DESCRIPTION: The NETAMD.INF file corrects the problem of the flickering network LED on a Deskpro XL under Windows 95. SUPERSEDES: N/A HOW TO USE: 1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP1458.EXE. 2. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file: SP1458 [ENTER] The following files should be created: NETAMD.INF README.TXT 3. After the files are created, you may delete the downloaded file SP1458.EXE if you wish. 4. To install: a. Copy NETAMD.INF c:\windows\inf (This will replace the old NETAMD.INF file. The c:\windows\inf directory is a hidden directory.) b. Right click on "My Computer", choose "Properties" on the menu that appears. Click on the Device Manager tab. Click on "+" sign in front of "Network Adapters". Click on "AMD PCNET Family Ethernet Adapter (PCI & ISA)" to highlight it. Click on "Remove" button. Click on "OK" when asked to confirm that you want to remove this device from the system. (Wait while system works.) c. From the Start Menu, choose "Shut Down...", choose "Restart the computer?" and click on the "Yes" button. When comptuer is restarted, the system will report that it has found new hardware. d. Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM or diskettes when prompted. The files are actually already on the system (unless they have been deleted) and the user may choose "Skip File" for each file. (Any customization that the user has done with his network properties or services will probably be lost. e. Message appears "To finish setting up your new hardware, you must restart your computer. Do you want to restart your computer now?" Click on the "Yes" button. (Be careful not to move the mouse during the restart or the system may hang due to a problem with the Logitech mouse driver.) 5. The network LED now works properly. You may need to reconfigure your network properties to set up the needed services (i.e. Banyan, Netware, protocols, etc.).
