Softpaq Solution: SP1568 File Name: N/A Title: 586Z-Family System ROM and Drivers for 85 Hz Support Version: 1.25 Rev B CATEGORY: Drivers / Video EFFECTIVE DATE: 12 March 1996 PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq models with the 586Z-Family System ROM and Cirrus Logic CL5434 graphics chip (such as the ProLinea E Series other than the ProLinea 6150e). OPERATING SYSTEMS: DOS and Windows 3.1, Windows 95 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: DOS and Windows 3.1, Windows 95 SUPERSEDES: N/A DESCRIPTION: This creates a ROMPaq diskette for 586Z-Family systems and three Driver Support diskettes to provide 85Hz refresh rate support under DOS/Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 for Compaq models that use the Cirrus Logic CL5434 graphics chip. First use the ROMPaq diskette to update the System ROM as explained in "How to Use", then use the Driver Support diskettes. The ROM family and the graphics chip of your Compaq system can be determined by running F10 Setup or Compaq Diagnostics. Examples of the ROM family are: 486G, 486G1, 486G3, 486Y, 486Y1, 586Z. For 586Z-Family systems download SP1568 (this SoftPaq). For 486G-Family systems download SP1566. For 486Y-Family systems download SP1567. The system ROM is detected before the update is begun, so that a system cannot be updated with an incorrect ROMPaq. HOW TO USE: 1. Obtain four formatted 1.44 MB diskettes. 2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP1568.EXE. 3. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file: SP1568 [ENTER] You will be prompted to place the formatted 1.44 MB diskettes into a diskette drive to create each diskette. 4. After the diskettes are created, you may delete the downloaded file SP1568.EXE if you wish. 5. At this point, the ROMPaq and Driver Support diskettes have been created and are ready to use for upgrading. Use the LABEL command on the diskettes to help identify them. 6. To update the ROM, power down the computer, cold boot from the ROMPaq diskette containing the program ROMPAQ.EXE, and follow the on-screen instructions. 7. The Driver Support diskettes contain the drivers to select the 85Hz video modes. Read all README files before installing these updates.
