WHAT YOU NEED. To get the patch update working on your system you will need: 1) Xwing, or the Tie fighter demo configured for General Midi with Soundblaster. 2) A Gravis Ultrasound card (preferably with 1 MB memory, they are complex patches). 3) The latest Megaem drivers (version 2.03). 4) The patch updates (available at the Gravis BBS.) _____________________________________________________________ SETUP To set up the update follow these steps. 1. Copy the Xwing.ini file to your ultrasound directory. (The same directory where ultrasnd.ini resides). Overwrite your previous Xwing.ini file. 2. Copy xwing2.pat to your patch directory. (Usually the MIDI subdirectory). Overwrite the previous xwing2.pat. 3. Go to where you installed Xwing or the Tie Fighter demo. There you will find a subdirectory called RESOURCE. The files sfx.lfd and sfxgmd.lfd should be replaced with the ones that came with this update. Make sure you back them up before replacing them. 4. To use the updated patches follow the directions that came with the first patch set. (backup ultrasnd.ini, then rename Xwing.ini to ultrasnd.ini) 5. Load Megaem and Emuset 6. Run Xwing, or the Tie fighter demo. 7. When done playing don't forget to rename Ultrasnd.ini, and your Ultrasnd.ini backup file back to their original names. Failure to do so will keep loading these patches for any program that loads patches through the Ultrasnd.ini file. You can simplify the process by writing a batch file to take care of all the renaming, and loading of Megaem and Xwing. Or if you have multiple configurations under DOS you can include the renaming statements in your autoexec.bat file. _______________________________________________________________ BACKGROUND LucasArts let slip a little bug with Xwing, that made it's way into the Tie fighter demo. Although I brought it to their attention they haven't done anything about it much less fix it. The problem lies in the targeting computer when using General MIDI. (Remember the sound you got when you used SBOS?). The exact problem is that the part of the file (sfxgmd.lfd) that is responsible for the targeting computer sound is garbled with nonsense. If you ever noticed your computer slowing down badly whenever the targeting computer was being used, guess what was responsible. Luckily the file is made up of MIDI type 2 sequencer files (loadable by certain sequencers such as Voyetra SP gold or winjammer.) It was an easy matter to fix the problem so I did it on my own. While I did that I also made it so you can play the Xwing engine sounds and the flute at the same time. I also made the ion blasts louder. That is the sfx.lfd file. __________________________________________________________________________ Legal Stuff These files are provided as is. I take no responsibility for any damage you may do to anyone or anything when you use these files. If you do not know where your Ultrasound directories are, and don't know how to copy and rename files then this is probably an endeavor you should not be undertaking. Feel free to upload and distribute these files in their UNMODIFIED form, including this file, using any compression program you wish. -Dino Zervos. (Winter7 on AOL)
