Ether16 LAN Card Setup for Banyan Vines ----------------------------------------------------------------- Contents: Before You Begin Setup Technical Support -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEFORE YOU BEGIN -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your computer does NOT have a plug-and-play motherboard, the following notes apply to you: 1. Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network software drivers, you MUST configure the card's internal settings with the SETUP program included on Ether16 disk 1 under the UTILITY directory. Use the program to set the card's interrupt (IRQ) and I/O settings. For directions on using SETUP, see your Ether16 user guide. 2. Most network software packages like Windows 95, Windows NT, Novell NetWare, etc., include a "generic" network driver that will work with a wide range of network cards. This generic driver is called a "Novell NE2000" compatible driver, and it is fully supported by the Ether16 card. If your network software package asks you to choose the name of the network card you're installing from a list of available adapters, and you find "NE2000" or "Novell NE2000" listed, you don't need to follow the directions below---simply choose to install the NE2000 driver and the Ether16 Card will be ready for use. THE ETHER16 IS ONLY NE2000 COMPATIBLE WHEN THE CARD'S PLUG-AND-PLAY MODE IS TURNED OFF. If your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard, and you wish to use the generic NE2000 driver, you must run the Ether16 SETUP program and turn the card's plug-and-play mode off. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Banyan Vines -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Create a bootable diskette (booted with DOS 3.1 or above) which will be used as a Banyan Vines boot disk, or create a sub-directory on your hard disk. There are two methods to copy the required files for Banyan VINES workstation to the bootable diskette or sub-directory of hard disk. Method 1. 1) Execute 'INSTALL' command which was saved in the diskette labeled "VINES MASTER DISK". 2) Follow the instructions to copy the files to the bootable diskette or sub-directory of hard disk. You'll find the NDIS file located in the NDIS\DOS directory of the disk. Method 2. 1) Execute the 'BAN' command. 2) Log into the VINES system. 3) Execute the 'PCCOPY' command. 4) Select 'NDIS Ethernet' and follow the instructions for copying the files to the bootable diskette or sub-directory of your hard disk. Next, insert the Ether16 disk 1 into drive A and the prepared bootable diskette into drive B. Copy the appropriate NDIS driver file (ETHER.DOS) from drive A to B (or to the sub-directory of your hard drive). You'll find the NDIS file located in the NDIS\DOS directory of the disk. Modify your CONFIG.SYS file so that it includes the following statements: DEVICE=PROTMAN.DOS /I:A:\ DEVICE=ETHER.DOS NOTE: "A:\" is the path that points to your Banyan Vines workstation files. Create a ETHER.NIF file and include the following statements in it: Model = LINKSYS ETHERP Ethernet Card Path = A:\ DeviceDriver = ETHER.DOS DeviceName = ETHER$ Type = NDIS NOTE: "A:\" is the path that points to your Banyan Vines workstation files. Create a PROTOCOL.INI file that contains the following lines: [PROTOCOL MANAGER] drivername = PROTMAN$ [VINES_XIF] drivername = NDISBAN$ bindings = "ETHER" [ETHER] drivername = ETHER$ Next, execute 'PCCONFIG' command: 1) "CONFIGURING A PC FOR THE NETWORK" is displayed on the screen. Select '1 - Network Card Settings'. | "Network Card Setting" is displayed. Select 'NDIS Ethernet'. | "NDIS Ethernet" is displayed. Choose the Linksys adapter Ex. Interrupt Level (2-15) : 5 PROTOCOL.INI bindings = ETHER | 2) Return to the "CONFIGURING A PC FOR THE NETWORK" screen Select '2 - Login Environment Settings'. | "Network Card Setting" is displayed. Pick 'NDIS Ethernet'. | The 'PCCONFIG.DB' file will be generated. Reboot your computer and log into the Vines network by executing the BAN command.
