Ether16 LAN Card Setup for IBM Lan Server and Comm. Manager 1.x ----------------------------------------------------------------- Contents: Before You Begin Setup IBM LAN Server 4.0 IBM LAN Server 3.0 IBM LAN Server 2.0 IBM Communication Manager 1.0 Technical Support -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEFORE YOU BEGIN -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your computer does NOT have a plug-and-play motherboard, the following notes apply to you: 1. Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network software drivers, you MUST configure the card's internal settings with the SETUP program included on Ether16 disk 1 under the UTILITY directory. Use the program to set the card's interrupt (IRQ) and I/O settings. For directions on using SETUP, see your Ether16 user guide. 2. Most network software packages like Windows 95, Windows NT, Novell NetWare, etc., include a "generic" network driver that will work with a wide range of network cards. This generic driver is called a "Novell NE2000" compatible driver, and it is fully supported by the Ether16 card. If your network software package asks you to choose the name of the network card you're installing from a list of available adapters, and you find "NE2000" or "Novell NE2000" listed, you don't need to follow the directions below---simply choose to install the NE2000 driver and the Ether16 Card will be ready for use. THE ETHER16 IS ONLY NE2000 COMPATIBLE WHEN THE CARD'S PLUG-AND-PLAY MODE IS TURNED OFF. If your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard, and you wish to use the generic NE2000 driver, you must run the Ether16 SETUP program and turn the card's plug-and-play mode off. Setup ------------------------------------------------------------------ Installing the NDIS driver for IBM LAN SERVER 4.0 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ In the OS/2 Desktop group, double-click on the MPTS icon. Click on the button. Select the "LAN adapters and protocols" option. Click on the button. Select the "Other adapters ..." option. Insert the Ether16 disk in Drive A or B and type the driver path: a:\ndis\os2 Click on the button. Select "Linksys Ether16 Ethernet Adapter", and then click on the Add button. Select "IBM OS/2 NETBIOS", and then click on the Add button. Select "IBM IEEE 802.2", and then click on the Add button. Click OK. Click Close. Click Exit. Reboot your system. Installing the NDIS driver for IBM LAN SERVER 3.0 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Install IBM OS/2 into your system, if not yet installed. Insert the NTS/2 Adapter & Protocol Support Disk in Drive A. Execute the LAPs program. Select "Install", and then specify the target drive. Select "Install" again and insert the Ether16 disk 1 in Drive A. a:\ndis\os2 Select "Configure". Select "Linksys Ether16 Ethernet Adapter", and then click on the Add button. Select "IBM OS/2 NETBIOS", and then click on the Add button. Select "IEEE 802.2", and then click on the Add button. Click OK. Click Exit. Click Continue. Reboot your system. Your CONFIG.SYS and PROTOCOL.INI files should reflect your card setup: \CONFIG.SYS =========== : Device=d:\IBMCOM\MACS\ETHER.OS2 : \IBMCOM\PROTOCOL.INI ==================== : [ETHERI_NIF] Drivername = ETHER$ Install the LAN Server or Requester program. For information, please refer to your IBM LAN Server "Planning and Installation" manual. Installing the NDIS driver for IBM LAN SERVER 2.0 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Assuming that OS/2 2.0 is correctly installed and working properly, install the LAN SERVER. At this point, no network adapters must be installed in the computer. Install LAN SERVER according to the IBM installation procedure. When prompted for the adapter, select any of the adapters LAN SERVER supports. For example, "Western Digital EtherCard PLUS ...". Then, continue with the LAN SERVER installation. After successfully installing LAN SERVER, shut down OS/2 for system configuration. Do not install any network adapters yet. The OS/2 system will boot up and bring up the LAN SERVER services. The system will then display error messages since the network adapter you selected is not installed. Ignore these messages and continue with the OS/2 booting procedure. Insert the Ether16 disk 1 in Drive A and copy the following files from the NDIS\DOS directory of the disk to your hard drive: COPY ETHER.OS2 to C:\IBMCOM\MACS COPY ETHERI.NIF to C:\IBMCOM\MACS\ETHERI.NIF In the OS/2 Desktop group, run the OS/2 system editor. You need to modify the following files: C:\CONFIG.SYS C:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL.INI CONFIG.SYS Modifications: DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\MACS\MACWD.OS2 to DEVICE=C:\IBMCOM\MACS\ETHER.OS2 PROTOCOL.INI Modifications: - Under the [IBMLXCFG] section, add the following line: ETHERI_nif = ETHERi.nif - Under the [NETBEUI_nif] section, change the following line: Bindings = MACWDMC_nif to Bindings = ETHERI_nif - Under the MAC SECTION definitions, add the following section: [ETHERI_nif] DriverName = ETHER$ After modifying the two files above, shut down OS/2, and turn the computer off. Install the Ether16 Ethernet adapter. Turn on the system to start OS/2. After starting OS/2, LAN SERVER services can now successfully start without causing any errors. Installing the NDIS driver for IBM Communication Manager 1.0 ============================================================ Install IBM Communication Manager Copy the ETHER.OS2 and ETHERI.NIF files from the NDIS\OS2 directory of the Ether16 disk 1 to the C:\IBMCOM\MACS directory of your hard disk Select the Ether16 Ethernet adapter Choose the appropriate protocols Check that the CONFIG.SYS file includes the following line: DEVICE = C:\IBMCOM\MACS\ETHER.OS2 Shut down your OS/2 system, and then reboot your PC. The setup is complete.
