Ether16 LAN Card Setup for Artisoft LANtastic ----------------------------------------------------------------- Contents: Before You Begin Setup Version 6 Version 5 Technical Support -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEFORE YOU BEGIN -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your computer does NOT have a plug-and-play motherboard, the following notes apply to you: 1. Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network software drivers, you MUST configure the card's internal settings with the SETUP program included on Ether16 disk 1 under the UTILITY directory. Use the program to set the card's interrupt (IRQ) and I/O settings. For directions on using SETUP, see your Ether16 user guide. 2. Most network software packages like Windows 95, Windows NT, Novell NetWare, etc., include a "generic" network driver that will work with a wide range of network cards. This generic driver is called a "Novell NE2000" compatible driver, and it is fully supported by the Ether16 card. If your network software package asks you to choose the name of the network card you're installing from a list of available adapters, and you find "NE2000" or "Novell NE2000" listed, you don't need to follow the directions below---simply choose to install the NE2000 driver and the Ether16 Card will be ready for use. THE ETHER16 IS ONLY NE2000 COMPATIBLE WHEN THE CARD'S PLUG-AND-PLAY MODE IS TURNED OFF. If your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard, and you wish to use the generic NE2000 driver, you must run the Ether16 SETUP program and turn the card's plug-and-play mode off. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artisoft's LANtastic -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 6.00 ------------ 1. Go through the LANtastic installation. When you are prompted to choose the type of network card to install, select NOVELL NE2000 (or compatible) or NEX016 Follow the rest of the directions in the LANtastic installation and you will be prompted to reboot your computer. If the installation doesn't work correctly the first time, the "IRQ" or "IOBASE" settings in the startnet.bat file probably don't match the settings made in the Ether16 Setup program. 2. Verify the STARTNET.BAT file. The STARTNET.BAT loads the network driver and all LANtastic related files. Make sure that the "NEX000" line's "IRQ" and "IOBASE" settings match those selected in the Linksys Ether16 LAN Card Setup Program. 3. Once changes have been made, be sure to reboot your computer for changes to take effect. Version 5 A/I ------------- 1. Install LANtastic as normal. When prompted for the type of network adapter to install, choose any adapter from the list. NOTE: If you have "NDIS SUPPORT" as one of your selections, choose that selection and follow the Lantastic directions. When asked to enter the of the NDIS drivers, enter the following: A:\NDIS\DOS Follow the rest of the Lantastic instructions and your installation is complete and you can skip the rest of the steps. 2. Copy the Ether NDIS driver to the LANtastic directory. (Put the Ether16 disk into drive A and type the following: COPY A:\NDIS\DOS\ETHER.DOS C:\LANTASTI at the DOS prompt). 3. Next, add the following statements to your PC's CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\ETHER.DOS 4. Using a standard text editor, make a file called PROTOCOL.INI. Save it in the LANTASTI directory, and include all of the following statements in it: [PROTMAN] DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$ DYNAMIC = YES PRIORITY = AILANBIO [ETHER] DRIVERNAME = ETHER$ 5. Finally, modify your STARTNET.BAT file: Change the driver line (the line above the AILANBIO statement) so t reads as follows: AI-NDIS BIND_TO=ETHER 6. Save the file and restart your PC. The installation is complete.
