Ether16 LAN Card Setup for Microsoft Windows 98 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Contents: Before You Begin Setup Technical Support -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEFORE YOU BEGIN -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your computer does NOT have a plug-and-play motherboard, the following notes apply to you: 1. Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network software drivers, you MUST configure the card's internal settings with the SETUP program included on Ether16 disk 1 under the UTILITY directory. Use the program to set the card's interrupt (IRQ) and I/O settings. For directions on using SETUP, see your Ether16 user guide. 2. Most network software packages like Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Novell NetWare, etc., include a "generic" network driver that will work with a wide range of network cards. This generic driver is called a "Novell NE2000" compatible driver, and it is fully supported by the Ether16 card. If your network software package asks you to choose the name of the network card you're installing from a list of available adapters, and you find "NE2000" or "Novell NE2000" listed, you don't need to follow the directions below---simply choose to install the NE2000 driver and the Ether16 Card will be ready for use. THE ETHER16 IS ONLY NE2000 COMPATIBLE WHEN THE CARD'S PLUG-AND-PLAY MODE IS TURNED OFF. If your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard, and you wish to use the generic NE2000 driver, you must run the Ether16 SETUP program and turn the card's plug-and-play mode off. Setup ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Ether16 LAN Card is a plug-and-play network adapter that is designed to be automatically detected by Windows 98 as soon as you insert it into your computer, provided your PC has a plug-and-play motherboard. If your PC isn't plug-and-play, you'll need to install the card's software manually. Instructions are included below. Before you begin the installation, you should have your original Windows 98 CD-ROM handy. Windows 98 may ask for it in order to install special files onto your computer during the network driver setup. When this occurs, insert your CD-ROM or other media into the drive and tell Windows 98 to look in the \win9X directory on the appropriate drive. For example, if your CD-ROM is drive D: on your system, and Windows 98 is requesting a file from it, you would type in D:\win98 and press Enter in order to inform 98 of the CD-ROM's location. If Windows 98 came pre-installed on your computer, you might also be able to find the files you need in the c:\windows\options\cabs folder on your hard drive if there is one. Some versions of the Windows 98 CD-ROM may be structured differently. See your Windows 98 user guide for additional information if necessary. Follow the instructions below to get the Ether16 LAN Card up and running with Windows 98. Install the Ether16 LAN Card hardware if you haven't already. If your computer has a plug-and-play motherboard, skip to the PLUG-AND-PLAY section below. Otherwise, follow the directions below. ETHER16 SETUP WITH NON-PLUG-AND-PLAY COMPUTERS 1. Turn on your computer. Windows 98 may or may not detect the Ether16 LAN Card's presence. If Windows 98 displays a New Hardware Detected message and indicates that it has found an NE2000 compatible network card, skip to step 4 below. If no message appears, continue with step 2. 2. Click on Start, followed by Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click on Network. Click on Add, then Adapter. Pick Linksys from the list of manufacturers. Choose Linksys Ether16 LAN Card from the list of network adapters that appears and click OK. Highlight Linksys Ether16 in the following components... box, then click on the Properties button. Click OK again. Windows 98 will begin copying the files it needs from your 98 CD- ROM or installation disks. When the copying is complete, you will be asked if you want to restart your computer. Click on Yes. After your computer restarts, proceed to the File and Printer Sharing section below. 4. If Windows 98 detects an NE2000 network card, click on Start, Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click on the System icon and choose Device Manager. Scroll down in the list until you come to Network Adapters. Double-click on it to display any installed network cards. Highlight NE2000. When you're finished, click on OK, followed by OK. When asked if you want to restart your computer, select Yes. Turn to File and Printer Sharing below. ETHER16 SETUP WITH PLUG-AND-PLAY COMPUTERS Turn on your computer. As Windows 98 starts up, it will automatically detect the presence of new hardware. The installation procedure for the network driver will vary slightly depending on the version of Windows 98 you are using. A window appears entitled Update Device Driver Wizard when Windows 98 detects the Ether16 card's presence. When the Update Device Driver Wizard window appears, click on the Next button. Windows 98 will automatically find the NE2000 Compatible driver for the card. Click on Finish. Windows will copy the necessary files to your system. Supply your original Windows 98 CD-ROM if asked to do so. Follow the directions that appear on your screen. When asked if you want to restart your computer, choose Yes.
