Here is a set of modified NTSC "color bars", followed by "luminance bars". If both sets of bars were displayed on a black and white display, the shades of gray in each vertical column would be identical. The numerical values that create each color or luminance shade in NTSC television are shown, as well as what the equivalent computer display settings are. The bar on the far right in all three sections is totally black.

At the bottom of this page are four bars at 11%, 6%, 3% and 0% luminance (zero chrominance) that can be used to set the Brightness and Contrast baseline on a monitor. On a correctly adjusted monitor, when viewed under very subdued lighting conditions, you should be barely able to tell the difference between all four bars. (The difference between 0% and 3% luminance is extremely small.) Note that many people want more far brightness than a correctly adjusted display produces, so you may not want to set the brightness so low. You might settle for being able to tell the difference between 0% and 11% as your minimum Brightness setting. These levels appear on the far right and left of the bottom chart, and next to each other, on the right of the Luminance chart (middle).

Notice: Printing this version of the color bars chart is not recommended due to the amount of black ink that will be consumed to print the background. If you want to print this information, use the version shown in Appendix F-1.

Note: On video systems that only support displaying 256 colors at a time, the gray scale values may not be displayed exactly as intended. It should render correctly on 32-bit, 24-bit and most 16-bit "Hi Color" video systems.
