CSA-6460U2 Windows 95 Driver Installation Instruction ------------------------------------------------------ The operating system (Windows95, OSR2, or Windows 98) and the Windows95 drivers for the CSA-6460U2 MUST BE INSTALLED USING THE ONBOARD IDE CONTROLLER prior to installing the CSA-6460U2. DO NOT install the CSA-6460U2 until told to do so in the following instructions. If the CSA-6460U2 IDE controller is installed before its driver is installed, Windows95 will hang. While Windows95 driver can be installed in "safe mode", it is not recommended. INSTALLATION ------------- 1. Install Windows 95, OSR2, or Windows 98 using the onboard IDE controller. 2. Insert the CMD Installation driver diskette into a 3.5" floppy drive. 3. Press the "Start" button on the Windows 95 status bar. 4. Select "Run..." 5. Type "A:\win95\setup", where "A" is the identifying letter for the 3.5" floppy drive. 6. The system will prompt "About to install CMD bus master IDE driver. Do you wish to continue?" When this prompt appears, select "Yes". 7. The system will prompt "Windows must restart to continue setup. Do you want to restart Windows now?" When this prompt appears, select "Yes" and remove the installation diskette from the 3.5" floppy drive. Windows will restart. 8. Shut down the system. 9. Insert the CSA-6460U2 IDE controller into a PCI slot that supports bus master DMA. (Your computer's manual should identify the bus-master slots.) 10. Connect your Ultra-IDE drive(s) to the CSA-6460U2 IDE controller. Align pin 1 of the IDE cable to pin 1 of the CSA-6460U2's primary IDE or secondary IDE connector. Pin 1 on the primary IDE and secondary IDE connectors are indicated on the board. Pin 1 on the IDE cable is indicated by a colored stripe. 11. Power up your computer. Ensure that the system BIOS does not contain any information regarding hard drive geometry: if such information is there, change the BIOS hard drive setting to either "AUTO" or "NONE". Write the results to the CMOS and exit. The CSA-646U2 on-board BIOS will automatically detect the hard drive(s) once power-up is completed. 12. The system will prompt "To finish setting up your new hardware, you must restart your computer." Whenever this prompt appears, select "No". 13. The system will prompt " Do you want to reboot the system? System must be rebooted before the device parameters can take effect." When this prompt appears, select "Yes". The system will restart at this time. CHANGING/ADDING PARAMETERS TO THE DRIVER ---------------------------------------- If you wish to configure the driver for optimal performance, do the following steps. 1. Click on the Start button located at the bottom left hand corner, and then point to Settings. 2. Click on the Control Panel. 3. The Control Panel window will appear; double-click on the System icon. 4. The System Properties window will appear; click on the Device Manager tab. 5. Double click on Hard disk controllers to expand the entries. You should see: "CMD PCI-0646U Ultra DMA Bus Master IDE Controller", "Primary CMD Ultra DMA Bus Master IDE Controller", and "Secondary CMD Ultra DMA Bus Master IDE Controller". 6. Double-click on Primary CMD Ultra Bus Master IDE controller and its property window will appear. The same windows will appear for the Secondary CMD Ultra DMA Bus Master IDE controller. 7. Adjust PCI Bus speed to match the PCI speed of user computer. For the PCI Bus Speed setting, set it to "Don't Know" if you are not sure of your PCI bus speed. Follow the chart below for the PCI bus speed for each different CPU speeds: CPU speed ->Corresponding PCI bus speed 50MHz and 75MHz -> 25MHz 60MHz, 90MHz and 150MHz -> 30MHz 66MHz, 100MHz, 133MHz, 166MHz, 200MHz, 233MHz, 266MHz, and 300MHz -> 33MHz 9. Generally, you can leave the "Enable LBA support", "16-Bit PIO", and "Override Drive Mode Settings" checkboxes blank. With a proper PCI bus speed and DMA mode on Master and slave enabled, the driver will be tuned to run at the highest speed allowed by the hardware that you have. -- Enable DMA on Master or slave only if the device attached to that channel is capable of DMA or Ultra DMA transfer; otherwise do not enable this option! If you encounter any problems or disk errors, try disabling DMA and see if that helps. -- 16-bit PIO: some CD-ROMs must have this option in order to work properly. -- Enable LBA Support: if your BIOS already supports LBA mode then you do not need to enable this option. -- Override Drive Mode Settings: this option should be used *ONLY* if you encounter any problems with your HDD. WARNING: Overriding a HDD to a mode *HIGHER* than it is capable of will result in data corruption! You may override the Master or Slave drive to a specific mode as below: -- Click on the PIO button for PIO mode overrides. Available options are Mode 0 to Mode 4. -- Click on the SDMA button for single-word DMA mode overrides. Available options are Mode 0 to Mode 2. -- Click on the MDMA button for multi-word DMA mode overrides. Available options are Mode 0 to Mode 2. -- Click on the UDMA button for Ultra DMA mode overrides. Available options are Mode 0 to Mode 2.
