Contents 3. Installation 4. History 5. Release Notes 6. Known Bugs and Operating Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Overview This CD contains the ELSA Display Driver for Microsoft Windows 98. The driver supports 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in all resolutions available on used ELSA board. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Contents This directory contains the following files: README.TXT the file you currently look at LIESMICH.TXT german version of README VERSION.TXT Version info about driver and tools ELSARVL.CAB display driver file for NVIDIA based graphic boards including 3D REVELATOR support ELSARVL.INF Installation file for driver and tools In case of trouble during or after installation, please make sure you have all the files mentioned above! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Installation 3.1 Installing ELSA graphics board for Windows 98 On startup Windows 98 detects the ELSA graphics board as "PCI early VGA Device" or a "PCI standard VGA adapter" and prompts for a manufacturer disk. Advanced users can now install as described in 3.3, Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install. If you prefer an easy way to install the driver or the driver is downloaded as EXE from the web you should first confirm Windows request to install a "PCI Standard VGA adapter". Later you can start the EXE or install by CD. 3.2 Installation from CD During a running Windows 98 session insert the CD into your CD-ROM. Normally after the CD is read, a setup is started and guides through installation. In case 'Auto Insert Notification' is disabled in your system, the setup has to be started manually by double clicking its icon in the root of CD. Now you can choose the components to be installed. After rebooting the system your monitor is recognized and installed. A resolution and color depth can be chosen now. 3.3 Installing downloaded driver packages Driver packages from the web are self-extracting EXEs. The files are temporary copied to e.g. c:\elsainst directory and an automatic driver setup is started. Tools are installed, too. After finishing the setup or canceling the procedure the extracted installation files are deleted, including the temporary created folder. 3.4 Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install After Windows recognized the ELSA graphics adapter choose 'Have Disk...'. If you are updating the driver manually, select 'change...' in the advanced settings of the diplay properties. Now browse through the ELSA CD and select the proper display driver subdirectory (e.g. GLORIA\SYNERGY\WIN9X\STANDARD).Windows will copy the driver files and prompt you to reboot the computer. After restarting, Windows is running with the ELSA display drivers active. If your ELSA graphics adapter is not the primary display adapter in Windows 98, you have to activate the hardware by clicking on the connected monitor bitmap in the global windows display settings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Revision History This section describes changes to the previous releases of this disk. Version 4.12.01.0206-0120 - based on NVIDIA build 530 - no video-support - Installation bug on Erazor III Pro fixed Version 4.12.01.0206-0090 - based on NVIDIA build 530 Version 4.12.01.0116-0020 - based on NVIDIA build 375 Version 4.12.01.0112-0010 - first released version - complete DirectX7 support added (strongly recommended) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Release notes 5.1 DirectDraw/Direct3D support The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from DirectX7, but to use it in an application, you must install DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft DirectDraw/Direct3D components are not included in the standard retail version of Windows 98. You need an installation of DirectX7. To install DirectDraw/Direct3D use the CDSETUP from your CD or start the DXsetup.exe in the folder: Drive:\APPS\DIRECTX7 5.2 DirectX7 for Windows 98: The installtion of this newest version of Microsoft DirectX is urgently needed to achieve the full performance and features. You can locate this update at: e.g.: CD DRIVE :\APPS\DIRECTX7 5.3 AGP and Windows 95/98 AGP is supported only by the Windows version OSR-2.1 or higher. This is available after upgrading a Windows 95b (OSR2.0) version by the USB-Update 'USBSUPP.EXE'. The version number of your installed Windows can be found in the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Version and VersionNumber. The Entries for OSR-2.1 are: Version "Windows95" VersionNumber "4.03.1212" or "4.03.1214" If your mainboard has no Intel chipset it may be necessary to install a chipset specific software patch to get best support and performance using the AGP port. Normally this patch should be delivered on CD with your system or mainboard. Otherwise you may get the newest patches on the internetsites of the chipset vendors. Other chipset vendors are, e.g.: VIA, SIS, ALI. http://www.via.com.tw/ http://www.sis.com.tw/ http://www.ali.com.tw/ If you have any questions about full AGP support on non Intel mainboards please consult your distributor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Known Bugs and Operating Notes This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives hints on work arounds. - the suspend or hibernate mode should not be used - if the ELSA logo is activated in 32 bit colour mode, corruption of textures can occur - to avoid massive performance losses in the stereo mode, reduce the colour depth or the screen resolution - if there are flashing effects visible while playing 3D games with "3D Stereo" feature enabled, please make sure that the checkbox "poll with interrupts enabled" under: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Game Controllers -> Advanced is enabled. - if using the "no wait for vsync" option under "ELSA Driver Settings" "3D Revelator" stereo support will not work. - if using this graphics board with Windows98 on mainboards with VIA chipsets (MVP3, Apollo, a.s.o.) it is strongly necessary to install the VIA AGP driver patch "VIAGARTD.VXD" version 3.3 or newer. You can download this patch at: HTTP://www.via.com.tw or ask your system distributor. - Task switching while 3D applications are active leads to corruption of textures in some cases - OpenGL screen savers oftenly crash if an additional suspend is executed by the system or manually. - Mouse trails are not displayed, because the NVIDIA chip accelerates this Windows functionality in hardware - Under Windows 95 there are problems with topical games. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
