After starting a DirectX game under Windows 9X, do you only get a black screen, or does the monitor switch to power-saving mode?

If so, please ensure that your monitor has been correctly entered under 'Display Properties'. If this effect should occur nevertheless, use the following workaround:

The program DXDIAG.EXE is located in the PROGRAMS\DIRECTX\SETUP folder. After starting the program, you will see the a tab called 'Still Stuck?'. It contains the item 'Override', with which a fixed refresh rate for DirectDraw- or Direct3D-based applications can be specified.

Note:
In DirectX version 6.1 the DXDIAG options are called: MORE HELP, OVERRIDE, OVERRIDE VALUE. Enter your value there.

We recommend a refresh rate of at least 75 Hz (when using the ELSA 3D REVELATOR the refresh rate must be at least 100 Hz, with 120 Hz recommended). You must ensure, however, that your monitor supports the refresh rate that you have preselected at all resolutions used by your games.
