Hardware Installation Guide MAN-024E Version 12.14.95.06 Quick Start Guide and Software Installation Supplement For Version 5 Software backpack 800TD tape drive Please Read This Information Before Installing the Software! Includes Important Technical Notes and Compatible Tapes Listing. The software user's guide provided with your backpack tape drive is also sold with tape drives that require a plug-in card. There are some items in the user's guide which don't pertain to the backpack tape drive. This supplement clarifies the hardware and software installation and use of the backpack parallel port tape drive. Please begin by performing the procedure listed under HARDWARE INSTALLATION. Next, read the information titled FOR BOTH DOS AND WINDOWS VERSIONS. Follow the steps in either WINDOWS INSTALLATION or DOS INSTALLATION to complete your installation. ADVANCED OPTIONS contains additional information that will be helpful in using the backpack tape drive software. Hardware Installation Installing the backpack tape drive is a straightforward process. It consists of plugging the drive into your computer's parallel printer port. The instructions in this section will guide you step by step through the installation procedure. Perform the following steps to install the backpack drive: 1) Plug the backpack's cable into the "COMPUTER" connector of the backpack tape drive (depicted in Figure 1 of this guide). 2) Locate the parallel printer port connector on your computer. If you have more than one parallel printer port, it doesn't matter which one you use for the backpack tape drive. 3) If you have a printer connected to the parallel printer port, disconnect it and attach the printer cable to the "PRINTER" connector of the backpack tape drive (depicted in Figure 1 of this guide). 4) Connect the loose end of the backpack tape drive cable to the printer port on the computer. 5) Plug the backpack power unit into a wall outlet and attach the power cable to the power connector on the backpack tape drive (depicted in Figure 1 of this guide). 6) Make sure that the backpack 800TD's green power indicator LED is on. You will hear the tape cartridge being positioned (auto-referenced) by the backpack 800TD when the tape is first inserted into the drive. Once you have completed the installation successfully, your computer should work exactly as it did before. If it doesn't, review the installation procedure and check for mistakes. If the problem persists, refer to the Troubleshooting section of this supplement to try to isolate the cause. For Both DOS and Windows Versions... Ignore all references to I/O addresses, IRQ Levels, Interrupts and DMA Channels during the installation process. Your software is pre-configured for the backpack parallel port tape drive which does not need a plug-in card. Backups and Restores use an easy step-by-step (What-Where-How-When) approach to defining the scope of the operation. You don't need to specify Where since your software is pre-configured for the backpack parallel port tape drive. Use a pre-formatted tape for the compatibility test. During software installation, a backup and restore test will be performed on your drive. Be sure the tape cartridge has been formatted for use on a TR-1 or QIC-80 tape drive. If you insert an unformatted tape, the test will complete, but it will also format the tape which may take several hours. Windows Installation The backpack tape drive software requires at least 4MB of RAM for use under Windows. If you try to run with less, it may fail. This software will not run under Windows 3.0. Begin the installation as described in the user's guide. After the files are copied, click on RESTART WINDOWS, select the BPBACKUP group or folder and double-click BPBACKUP. Click on YES for configuration. During configuration, the software will search for a tape drive and will report that it has found a QIC-80 parallel port tape. Click on the box around the words QIC-80 PARALLEL PORT TAPE to select it, then click on OK to confirm it. Don't skip the compatibility test. When the compatibility test finishes, you will be in the configure screen of the Windows software. Click on BACKUP on the overhead tool bar to save your configuration and begin using your tape drive. DOS Installation Begin the installation by following the steps in your software installation guide. The installation process is automatic. Confirm the settings, when asked, after each test. Quick Start For Making Tape Backups These steps show the simplest way to make your first tape backup with your new backpack 800TD drive. Follow these steps AFTER you have installed the drive and software, and the configuration and compatibility tests have run successfully. NORMAL BACKUP FOR WINDOWS USERS Double click the BPBACKUP icon under Windows to launch the program. The software launches into the BACKUP screen. The program will initially be configured to back up your entire C: drive. If you wish to change this, use the right mouse button to click on the drive icon of your choice in the "Backup From" box. ù "All" backs up the entire drive. ù "None" allows you to then Select individual files or subdirectories. ù Click the "Select Files" button to make individual file or subdirectory selections. At the Select Files screen, click the right button to select an entire subdirectory or group of subdirectories. Click the left button to view the contents of a subdirectory and choose files individually. Click the "OK" button when you have finished selecting files. Click the "Start" button, that's all you have to do! (the Where, How, and When buttons can be bypassed - accepting the default selection). HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS Use TR-1 Travan tapes. They're preformatted, and their large capacity makes them the preferred choice. Preformatted tapes will save you hours with installation and your first backup. If you can't find TR-1 tapes, use a DC 2120 XIMAT or 2120 QIC-80 preformatted tape. You normally don't need to use the CONFIGURE option from the tool bar. Your drive was automatically configured during installation. If you're not sure which catalog to choose when restoring or comparing data, it may be easier to choose "Catalog - Delete" and remove all preexisting catalogs. Then you can choose "Catalog - Rebuild" to create only the catalog that you need. Advanced Options Changing default setup parameters Most backup needs will be satisfied by selecting SPEED, SAFETY or DEFAULT under HOW TO BACK IT UP. You can, however, modify the DEFAULT setup, or create several custom setups with distinct names. To change your backup settings, choose CUSTOMIZE under the HOW TO BACK IT UP option. Choose SETTINGS under TAPE BACKUP OPTIONS. Choose a category and select the desired option. The current settings are continuously displayed as you make your selections. Clicking on SPEED, SAFETY or DEFAULT will restore the settings to their original condition. When you are done with the current settings, click OK. Pull down the JOB menu (FILE menu for DOS version) from the command menu. Select SAVE to make these settings permanent in the current setup job. Select SAVE AS and specify a file name to make these changes permanent in a new setup file. To change setup jobs, pull down the JOB menu from the command menu. Select LOAD a setup file and specify your choice. Data Compression affects backup speed Whether it is faster to backup with or without data compression is dependent upon the CPU speed and type of parallel port your CPU has. The default setting of your software uses LOW data compression. You may wish to change your default setup parameters and try NO compression or HIGH compression. See which setting yields the highest MB/min. during backup. Backing up with NO compression will utilize more tape and minimize tape capacity. In general, if you have a 486-DX or faster, you will get better speed with compression. 386-DX or slower computers will generally get best speed with NO or LOW compression. File Catalogs As each Backup is performed, a Catalog is created on the hard disk containing a list of all files and directories in the Backup set. Restore and Compare operations use the Catalog for file selection. It is necessary to know the name of the Catalog for each Backup set you wish to Restore or Compare. DOS Users Note the session number displayed on the screen during Backup. Keep the session number with the tape. The session number is the name of the Catalog for that Backup set. Windows Users Note the date and time of your Backup. Keep them with the tape. The date and time are the name of the Catalog for that Backup set. If the Backup set you wish to restore from is not the last Backup set created, you'll need to specify the Catalog by using the mouse or keyboard to select the Catalog box in the Restore menu. This will display all of the Catalogs on hard disk. Select the Catalog that corresponds to the Backup set you wish to restore from. If you are restoring data to a different computer, to a newly formatted hard drive or when you are not sure which is the correct Catalog for a Backup set, select the CATALOG pull-down menu from the overhead command bar in the Restore or Compare screens. Select REBUILD to read the tape and create a Catalog of the Backup set. This also applies if you are restoring a dataset created under different backup software (i.e.. BPBACKUP version 1 or 2). You may prefer to store a Catalog on each tape. This allows you to Retrieve them from the tape when you don't know the Catalog name. Retrieving is faster than rebuilding. To Retrieve, pull down the CATALOG menu from the command menu. Select RETRIEVE to read in the Catalog from your tape. You'll need to change your Backup settings to store Catalogs on tape. Refer to CHANGING DEFAULT SETUP PARAMETERS in this supplement to learn about changing your Backup settings. More information can be found under Backup Catalogs in the user's guide. Troubleshooting The backpack tape drive should not affect the operation of your existing computer software and hardware. The on-line help screens and the User's Guide address the most common problems and their solutions. To solve most software problems: ù Check the Help option of the backup software. ù Check the solutions and procedures in the User's Guide. ù Check this Hardware Installation Guide. TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS If there seems to be a problem using the computer or backpack tape drive, read the following problem descriptions to see if they match those you are experiencing. The software installation did not complete. It stopped with an "Unable to Open File" error: Check to see if a TEMP directory has been set for your system in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, if not, create one as follows: At the DOS C: prompt type: MD \TEMP Replace any preexisting "set temp=" line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT with the following statement, or add this statement if none already exists: set temp=c:\temp The above line should be placed before any statement which launches Windows, such as the statement: WIN Be sure to re-boot your computer after making the above changes. Attempts to Restore or Compare result in a "Please insert tape #1 of the backup set xxxxxxxx.xxx" message. This will occur if the Catalog being used for file selection does not match the Backup set on the tape. Review FILE CATALOGS in this supplement or refer to Catalogs in the user's guide. At the START of a Backup, the program prompts for a description of the Backup set but does not wait for it to be entered. This will occur if the UNATTENDED BACKUP delay is not long enough. Review CHANGING DEFAULT SETUP PARAMETERS in this supplement to change your backup settings. Select a longer delay or disable unattended backup. During Backup or Restore, the software is unable to create or delete a file in the \sentry directory. The \sentry directory contains system files in use by the DOS UNDELETE utility. Either disable the UNDELETE utility before running the backpack software, or use the INCLUDE/EXCLUDE options under SELECT file names under WHAT to backup to exclude the \sentry directory. During Backup or Restore, the software is unable to create or delete a file in the \windows, \qbwin, or other directory. These directories contain system files in use by Windows, backpack or other programs. Use the INCLUDE/EXCLUDE options under SELECT file names under WHAT to backup to exclude the directory or specific files from the backup or restore operation. You may also select SKIP from the message window during the operation. These messages could also occur if you have write-protected files on your hard disk. See the DOS ATTRIB command for information on eliminating a read-only attribute. After you install the backpack tape drive, the printer doesn't work properly. This can occur if the power to the backpack drive is not on. In some cases, the printer will appear to work even though the power unit is disconnected. For reliable operation, make sure the backpack power unit is plugged in securely. The backpack tape drive is detected in the DOS version of the software, but not in the Windows version running Windows 3.1. Try starting Windows in Standard Mode by using the following option: C:\WIN /S Some printer drivers have been known to cause parallel port access problems under Windows. Try a different printer driver, disable the printer drivers or change from LPT1:LOCAL PORT to LPT1.DOS in the "Print Manager-Options-Printer Setup-Connect" window. Micro Solutions also has a Virtual Printer Sharing Driver available for downloading (see Contacting Technical Support) that helps regulate multiple devices, including many laser printers, when used on the same parallel port under Windows. This "VXD" file is downloadable under a name similar to: VXD3xx.EXE. The READ.ME file will provide complete installation instructions. The backpack tape drive passes compatibility test, but experiences read/write errors during normal operation. Add the following statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and re-boot: C:\set port_delay=10 (Note: The delay value can range from 5 to 25) (or) In the Configure screen, change the DMA Mode from "Fastest/High Speed" to "Most Compatible/Low Speed" (or) Change QBACKUP's "Data Verification" from "Sample Only" to "Read and Compare". The backpack tape drive software will not backup the DBLSPACE.000 and DRVSPACE.000 uncompressed volumes. These files do not require backing up. Simply backup the actual data on the compressed Drive C:. It is acceptable to use data compression when backing up the data from a drive compressed by Stacker, DoubleSpace or DriveSpace. Under Windows 95, long filenames do not appear in the Restore or Compare selection screens. Files with long filenames are also given DOS-compatible names up to eight characters long with a three letter extension. These will consist of the first few letters of the long name followed by a "~" or tilde character. While the Backup selection screen displays the Windows 95 long filenames, the Compare and Restore selection screens show the shorter version. In Windows 95 "Explorer" or "My Computer" screens, you can see the short version MS-DOS filename by right-clicking on the file and choosing "Properties". Technical Notes Windows 95 backup datasets created under Version 5 cannot be restored by previous versions of backup software due to the special dataset handling necessary for Windows 95 compatibility. Version 5 software must be used to restore Windows 95 datasets created under Version 5. This means that on a newly formatted hard drive, Windows 95 will have to be re-installed first, and this Version 5 software must then be re-installed before a restore can be performed. It is important to note that Version 5 is also fully capable of restoring datasets created under previous versions of backup software. The backpack tape drive requires an available hardware Interrupt (IRQ) from the parallel port. Some sound cards, FAX cards, scanner cards or network adapters in your computer may already be set to IRQ5 or IRQ7 and should be reconfigured if the backpack tape drive exhibits problems or is not found by this backup software. The backpack tape drive should be connected directly to the parallel port. Do not place any security key locks, extension cables, printer sharing switches or other non-backpack parallel port devices between the backpack and the parallel port. Instead, these devices can be connected to the "PRINTER" connector of the backpack tape drive (depicted in Figure 1 of this guide). Some CRT monitors emit excessive radio frequency noise. For best results, the backpack tape drive should not be placed in close proximity to some computer monitors. During a restore or compare, there is a statistic labeled: "Corrections". It is acceptable to have some correctable errors on a tape. Any signal retry or Error Correction Code usage will result in a "Correction". This is a normal statistic for any tape backup system. Complete documentation on how to backup a backpack hard drive to a backpack tape drive is available under Technical Support DOC #2302 (see Contacting Technical Support). A diagnostic utility called TAPEDIAG.EXE is quite helpful when diagnosing various parallel port communications difficulties. If this utility cannot be found on your backpack master diskette, it is available for downloading (see Contacting Technical Support). If the backpack tape drive experiences communications difficulties on an individual parallel port, produces errors during the compatibility test, or even hangs the system when detecting the backpack tape drive, the latest software drivers should be downloaded (see Contacting Technical Support). Use these drivers to replace the existing drivers in the C:\QBWIN (Windows) or C:\QBACKUP (DOS) directory. The filename to download is: BPTD_DRV.EXE (there is a READ.ME file included in this self-extracting download that provides complete installation instructions). These environment variables can also be added to your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file (one at a time, reboot after saving changes to your AUTOEXEC.BAT): SET PPT_FLAGS=2 (disables backup software's test for bi-directional parallel ports) SET PPT_FLAGS=4 (uses alternate data transfer method between port and backpack tape drive) SET PPT_FLAGS=8 (disables backup software's test for IBM PS/x parallel ports) SET PPT_FLAGS=16 (disables backup software's test for EPP ports) To use several of these variables together, simply add the values. For example: SET PPT_FLAGS=18 (2+16, disables bi-directional and EPP port usage) It is necessary to reset the backpack and the computer when disabling EPP tests/usage. Do this by powering down the computer and unplugging the backpack tape drive's power cable. Contacting Technical Support ù Contact Micro Solutions' FaxBack service at 815.754.4600.
