Greg Lentz(GLENTZ) -*- 23641 6-JUL 00:46 General Information RE: Radio Shack - JUNK (Re: Msg 23640) From: DAIRYLADY To: GLENTZ Hi, Greg! I, too, wish there were more people still logging onto the Tandy Forum - and I've also been wondering what will become of it when Falsoft's current contract to maintain it runs out. I've not called and asked for my subscription money back, either, but now I guess I will have to. My last renewal was right after I received the last issue any of us received, and it was for two years! About which service to use, well, I still like Delphi and it's other areas, although my personal obligations here at home (elder care), make it difficult to spend as much time as I'd like to in any forum anymore. You really ought to do some prowling through the custom forums before you decide to leave, because there are lots of them now. To be realistic, I don't think it'll be easy to keep any Tandy forum alive anymore, anywhere. That's because there are no new Tandy computers, and people newer to computing aren't going to be interested in our older, slower, but very unique machines. It's kind of funny that old Tandys are still very high priced in the exchanges, though. Some people have always interpreted unique to mean incompatible, but I have so far been able to run every program on my Tandy machines that will run on any other contemporary brand. In fact, I run some programs on my old 1000TL that the people who support them maintain won't run on it. One is a dairy herd management program from the Dairy Records Processing Center at North Carolina State University, and the other is a farm financial records program from the University of Missouri. Anyway, people new to computing are all starting out with Windows and Windows-interfaced programs, and everything is pretty well cut and dried, with all the machines pretty much the same, too. Even GW-BASIC, QBASIC, and QuickBASIC have fallen by the wayside. The name of the game now is sell, sell, sell (commercially, that is). So, if we do all ride off into the sunset, I will at least have fond memories of the fun we had solving each other's problems. Your messages have always been nice to read. I'll hang around for as long as anybody is here. I've been on Delphi over 2 years so that would be back about Feb. 1993. I visit the forum regularly but as the host of a custom forum (and now gaining SIG status), I find myself spending most of my time attending to forum matters there. I've enjoyed my Tandy computers (although the last one I bought is really an AST with a Tandy label) but realistically speaking, the number of Tandy users have dwindled since RS decided to stop manufacturing their own PCs. This probably indirectly led to the demise of PCM. As for migrating to other services, this is the only service I've ever been on and, after comaparing prices, it is also the least expensive. Just like Tandys weren't for everyone, Delphi isn't for everyone either, but I'll stick it out. It will overhang the slot, and you will only get 256K video, which for all intents and purposes is standard VGA, the best you can do with the 1000-series Tandys. Since you got a monitor capable of SVGA, I'd go ahead and get the 16-bit card. Someday you may want to move the monitor to another computer. On the other hand, most newer computers come with SVGA - or even better - built in. So if you think you might move it to a *newer* old computer that doesn't have built in SVGA, you should go ahead. If anybody laughs at you for your "ancient" computer, they will have to laugh at me, too, because I still use a 1000TL for most of my work. By the way, I have added a fancy SVGA monitor and card to mine, too. There are lots of third-party places to buy such a card, and some of them specialize in upgrades for Tandy machines. Dmgif 1.1 is available by ftp from: musie.phlab.missouri.edu:/pub/trs/tandy1000/deskmate/dmgif11*.* There are 4 files: dmgif11.doc, dmgif11a.zip, dmgif11b.zip, and dmgif11c.zip. dmgif11.doc contains the installation instructions and should be read first. 1.1 is much bigger than 0.9 in that it meets the DeskMate standard in every respect (except that it does not include a tutorial). I.e., it runs from DOS as well as DeskMate, from floppies as well as from a hard drive, installs and runs from the same floppies, includes an install program for both DOS and DeskMate, has online help, and installs under DeskMate using the DeskTop F7 Install option. You have to use the install program unless you're a computer geek; manual installation is complicated and can be harmful to your system if not done properly. The install program will delete 0.9 if present and use your DMGIF.CFG file if you have one (otherwise, it will make one for you). Dmgif 1.1 is functionally identical to 0.9; the main differences are online help, a DOS runtime version, and DeskMate-standard installation. Although 1.1 is a much bigger download than 0.9, on a system with DeskMate installed it won't take a great deal more hard drive space since most files are only needed for the DOS version. The DOS runtime version must not be run or installed on a system with DeskMate, if that system is a Tandy 1000 with EEPROM setup, since intermittent lockups can result. All in all, I consider 1.1 to be a great deal of effort for little return - I simply wanted to make the program meet the standard to the greatest degree possible. In your case, though, Sue, I would be interested in the results if you decide to get it. We determined by email that Dmgif 0.9 did not correctly detect and use XMS memory on your system. I learned that there are some nonstandard versions of HIMEM.SYS out there, and 1.1 has been changed to take account of them. Dmgif will run much better if it can use EMS or XMS memory. You also told me that you had not created a DMGIF.CFG file, and that you had grayscale VGA. Dmgif will display pictures faster and with better quality on gray VGA if the palette is set to Gray, and 1.1 Install will do that automatically if you don't already have a DMGIF.CFG file. I would also like your opinion of the online help. At any rate, here's the step-by-step. I don't have DLITE; I use the old text interface. From any Delphi prompt, type "go inter ftp musie.phlab.missouri.edu"and hit . Some instructions will appear; read them. The next prompt will say "Username [anonymous]:" (or something like that). Hit to accept the default. Next it will ask "Password [DAIRYLADY@DELPHI.COM]:" or some such. Again hit . Information about the ftp site will appear; read it. The next prompt will be "FTP>". Type: cd "pub/trs" including the quotes; read the message. At the next prompt, type: cd tandy1000 and read that message. At the next prompt, type: cd deskmate Then enter the following commands in the following order: ascii get dmgif11.doc binary mget dmgif11*.zip When done, type "bye" to exit the ftp site and return to Delphi. You could go directly to the directory where Dmgif 1.1 is by typing: cd "pub/trs/tandy1000/deskmate" .. but you should read the messages the first time you try it. The files you got from the ftp site will be placed in your workspace on Delphi. You use your communications program to download them to your PC, as you know. Type "down menu" at the "WS>" prompt to see the available protocols. musie.phlab.missouri.edu (called "musie") is the major, and almost the only, ftp site on the Internet for Tandy-related files and programs of all kinds, for all Tandy systems. Recent uploads for the Tandy 1000's include the demo version of Q&A Write for DeskMate and "St Robert Stinnett (IN%"c592073@showme.missouri.edu"). (For Unix Tandy's, you can upload directly to the download directory; browse around musie to find out how.) Anyway, Sue, I'm sure that's far more than you wanted to know :-), or needed to be told, but I hope some other Delphi users will read this and favor musie with some programs they've found, or find some interesting programs they can use. Thanks again for asking. Jeff (tvdog) -*- 23666 20-JUL 02:02 General Information RE: Radio Shack - JUNK (Re: Msg 23665) From: DAIRYLADY To: TVDOG Hi, Jeff! Well, I got it! First I printed out your message and underlined each instruction. It went smooth as silk. The trouble then was that I couldn't remember how to get the files out of my Workspace! ;-> Been too long... I fiddled around and finally figured that out, too - so now I have your new version of DMGIF. Tomorrow afternoon I'll install it, then play around with it and let you know how it goes. Today, I called RS and priced a 2MB SIMM kit for the 3800HD: $259.00! Then I called DCS and they want $138.00. Guess who got the business. Besides that, RS "will have to order that for you, and we'll call you when it comes in." DCS says "it'll take about four days." (Last time I ordered from them, they said four days, and it got here in two days.) I'm doing this because it looks like I'm going to eventually have to transition to using Windows, and I want to do it before I buy my next desktop computer. That will give me time to convert all my day-in-and-day-out business files from DeskMate to Lotus for Windows first. Also, I finally found a Windows-interfaced free-form database to take the place of MemoryMate, which has all our herd health and breeding records in it now. Our dairy production analysis program comes from University Extension, and by the time of the next upgrade, it probably won't run on the computers I have any more. (Re: Msg 23676) From: DAIRYLADY To: CAROL45 Hi, Carol! You could probably write a script in DeskMate Telecom to automate some of your Delphi sessions. When I first subscribed to Delphi, I only had Telecom in DeskMate 3. Yours is an earlier version, so I don't know its capabilities, but if you know how to get here "manually," then you can use the Buffer menu to capture your session and save it to a file. Print it out, study it, and use it as a guide to write an Autolog file using the Commands menu. The "3.2" you refer to sounds to me like your DOS version, which would be an upgrade for the 1000EX. Did your mother upgrade the memory? There are lots of third party sources for upgrades to the 1000EX, including memory, 3-1/2" floppies, and external hard drives. There are limits to what you can do with any older computer, but certainly a lot of people are still using them. Later, after upgrading to 640K (an amazing amount of memory, at the time!), I saved the forum messages to a several hundred K RAM disk. -Dick- -*- 23684 28-JUL 20:40 General Information RE: Model 100/102 (Re: Msg 23677) From: TESTRAKE To: ANDERSON4 You might try the Portable Place forum here (type - without the braces at any Delphi prompt. I did have a book on the Model 102 but I gave it to another person who found himself in your situation. He subsequently left a message (#4896) on that forum mentioning a source for parts and help. -Dick- -*- 23685 29-JUL 00:09 General Information RE: HELP! Sounds good. :) Carol -*- 23687 30-JUL 11:47 General Information Word processing shareware From: CAROL45 To: ALL I'm here again, this time wt that is the one that I used. When using a vintage computer, it's a good idea IMO, to use software from the same era, rather than attempt to make the current latest and greatest software work. I just checked the databases over in the PC forum. Procomm 2.4.3 (a slightly later version, but still pretty ancient) is available in the telecommunications database there. It's archived in ARC format, so you would need a de-arcing utility, also. If you'd like to try a copy, I'd be glad to send you a disk. -Dick- -*- 23689 30-JUL 21:59 General Information RE: Word processing shareware (Re: Msg 23687) From: WESF To: CAROL45 You're not the only one that has lived at one time with a computer with only 1 5.25 floppy drive. Hmmm...lemme think...I think I may be able to refer you somewhere where you might find a hard drive to work... Ok...a good place to get upgrades like that would be PC Enterprises. You could probably call 1-800-922-7257 to get a catalog. They have a bunch of stuff for EX and HX computers. Ok, as for the software...how much memory does it have? I know it is standard with 256k, but how much has it been upgraded? Wesley -*- 23690 30-JUL 22:07 General Information RE: HELP! The whole program is about 64k, 256k would be ample space. File size is limited to about 80k. Uses the old Wordstar command set, but there is a menu. You can get a hard drive for the EX, assuming that the firms that made them are still in business. Try DSC Industries, 5265 Hebbardsville Road, Athens, Ohio, 45701. Phone is 1 800 537-3539. They were still in business about a year ago. I can't guarantee that they still are.
