Tandy said that to replace my 70meg MFM HD I needed to replace my current HD Controller Board (250-4058) with their Controller Board 25-1095, which can be used with XT and AT machines. This board handles larger HD than the normal setup supports. It lists for $149.95 and operates with 8 bit data access. However, I found that Acculogic has a series of HD controller boards for AT and XT machines and their "sIDE-3/PLUS" model was just what I needed to handle the larger HD. What's more, it operates with 16 bit data trnsfer. The important feature of this model is that it contains an onboard BIOS that handles translation of larger capacity HDs. Upon bootup after installation, when you are asked what type of hard drive is present, just tell it type 1 (10 Meg). This signals the BIOS to interrogate the hard drive and discover automatically its specs on cylinders, heads, etc. Then the controller translates as necessary for the HD capacity. The installation ran very smoothly and the controller works fine. The best part is that the board cost only $42.99 at CompUSA!
