3800 HD (250-3533) Battery Information Faxback Doc. # 1469 Note: Use replacement Battery (25-3526). The following procedure tells you how to install the battery and how to connect the AC adapter that powers the computer and charges the battery. CAUTION: Using an AC adapter other than the one supplied might damage the battery and the computer. Follow these steps to install the rechargeable battery and connect the AC adapter. 1. Place the computer on a flat, level surface. 2. Slide the battery into the battery compartment. 3. Insert the AC adapter's barrel connector into the computer's DC IN 16V jack. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet and let the battery fully charge. When charging is complete, the BATT indicator lights green. You can use the computer on AC power as soon as you connect the adapter. Note: The battery charges in 4-8 hours, depending on the computer's activity. For example, if you use the computer while the battery charges and there is heavy hard/diskette drive access, charging takes longer. 5. When you finish using the AC adapter, unplug it from the AC outlet. Then, disconnect it from the computer. CAUTION: Do not leave the AC adapter plugged into the computer if it is not plugged into an AC outlet. Doing so can reduce the battery's life or damage the battery. Notes: * The battery discharges slightly if the AC adapter is connected to the DC IN 16V jack, but not to an AC outlet. * Do not store the battery in high temperature areas for long periods of time. Doing so damages the battery. * Eventually, the battery loses its ability to maintain a charge. This time period varies depending on use, storage conditions, and several other factors. When this occurs, replace the battery with the same type of battery. Fully charge the new battery before you use it. * Fully discharge the battery about once a week by operating the computer until the BATT indicator lights red and the computer automatically turns off. Then, recharge the battery. This prevents the battery from memorizing small discharges, which reduces battery life. * As a reminder that the battery is fully charged, set the battery's charge indicator switch so that it hides the red dot. Set the switch to the other position if the battery needs recharging. This is not an automatic feature. The switch does not perform any electrical function. Low Battery Indications: The computer's BATT indicator and beeper tell you the condition of the battery. The following chart shows you the meaning of each indication. INDICATION MEANING The BATT indicator lights orange. The battery is charging. The BATT indicator lights green. The battery is fully charged. The BATT indicator does not light. The AC adapter is not plugged in. Battery operation is normal. The BATT indicator lights red and Battery power is below the level required a tone sounds once about every for normal operation. Save your data to minute.* the hard disk or a diskette and recharge the battery. The BATT indicator lights orange The battery is not installed or there and flashes. might be a problem with the battery and/or charging circuit. * CAUTION: When the BATT indicator lights red and the computer sounds two consecutive beeps, you have about 2 minutes to save your data to the hard disk or a diskette before the computer turns off automatically. If battery power is too low for normal operation, but you want to continue using the computer, connect the AC adapter or install another fully charged battery. If you install another battery, first save any information to the hard disk or a diskette. Then, connect the AC adapter before you remove the discharged battery. This prevents you from losing information not saved to the computer's hard disk if the power automatically turns off because of low battery power. After you replace the battery, disconnect the AC adapter. CAUTIONS: * Do not incinerate the battery. * Do not directly connect the battery's negative and positive terminals to each other. * Do not store the battery in high temperature locations for extended periods. Battery Information: Total battery life for your 3800 HD depends on several factors. Average battery life times are difficult to determine because different people use the computer's features in different ways. However, to help you determine how long you can expect the battery to last, read this section. Normal Battery Life: Under the following normal conditions, a fully charged battery lasts about 2 hours: * Hard disk activity (reading or writing) uses no more than 10% of the computer's operation time. * Diskette drive activity (reading or writing) uses no more than 1% of the computer's operation time. * The BRIGHTNESS switch is at the low (dim) setting. * The serial ports are disabled. * The computer uses the standard 2MB of memory. (No additional memory is installed.) * There is no math coprocessor or modem installed. * There are no external devices connected. * All internal power management systems are turned on and active. * The battery is new and fully charged. Extending Battery Life: The following information helps you understand the battery better to get the most life out of the battery. * When you power the computer from and AC outlet, remove the battery unless you are charging it. This increases the long-term life of the battery. * About once a week, completely discharge the battery by using the computer with battery power until the BATT indicator lights red. Then, fully recharge the battery. This prevents the battery from developing a memory charge that shortens hourly battery life. * Use the low (dim) setting on the BRIGHTNESS switch, if possible. At full brightness, the backlight draws considerable power. In most cases, the low setting is adequate. * Be sure you enable the computer's power management features. * Disable the serial ports if you use battery power and you will not be using a serial device (modem, mouse, and so on). * Install additional extended memory and a math coprocessor only if your programs require it. * If you unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet, be sure you also disconnect it from the computer. * If possible, charge the battery only when it is fully discharged. You can recharge the battery up to about 400 times. As the number of charges increases, the hourly battery life decreases because the battery can no longer hold a 100% charge. * Remove the battery from the computer when the computer is not is use. Although the battery always discharges, the discharge rate is greater when the battery is connected to the computer. * Carry a fully charged spare battery when you need to operate the computer on battery power for longer periods of time. * Turn off the computer when it is not in use.
