Utility Name Function PASSWORD.COM Lets you create a power-on password. KP.EXE Provides password protection for the keyboard. Passwords: Passwords help protect your computer from unauthorized users. Your computer supports two passwords: Power-On Password--Must be entered each time you turn on the computer or press RESET. Keyboard Password--Used to temporarily lock and unlock the keyboard and/or optional mouse. The keyboard password is cleared when you turn off the computer or press the RESET button. Use a password that has special meaning to you--any word or number of up to seven characters. The password utilities record the exact keys you press, so do not attempt to substitute numbers on the numeric keypad for those on the typewriter keys. The system does not distinguish between upper and lower case letters. Creating a Power-On Password: A power-on password restricts use of the computer, keyboard, and optional mouse. If a user can not supply the correct password, the computer will not accept any input from the mouse or the keyboard. The computer must be reset or restarted before it will accept input, including another attempt at entering the password. 1. Be sure you are in the drive or directory containing the PASSWORD.COM file. At the operating system prompt, type password and press . A Passwords Menu is displayed, giving you the option of creating a power-on password or exiting. 2. Highlight POWER-ON PASSWORD and press . 3. Type the password, using the BACKSPACE key to correct any errors. Then, press . The following prompt is displayed: Is this correct? (Y/N) _ 4. If the password is correct, type Y and press . If the password is incorrect, type N and press . Enter the desired password. You will be prompted to enter the correct password each time you turn on the computer or press the RESET button. Note: When you create a password, the password is displayed as you type it. When you enter or change a password, the password is not displayed as you type it. Entering a Power-On Password: After you specify a power-on password, the following prompt is displayed when you turn on the computer: Enter Password: _ Type the complete password, and press . The computer permits three attempts to enter the correct password. If the correct password is not entered, the computer will not accept further input from the keyboard or the mouse. To try again, turn the computer off and then on again. Changing or Removing a Power-On Password: If you know the power-on password, you can change or remove it at the Enter Password: _ prompt. To change the power-on password, type: current-password/new-password where current-password is the current password and new-password is new password. Then, press . To remove the power-on password, type: current-password/ and press . Specifying and Using a Keyboard Password: A keyboard password enables you to lock the keyboard and mouse without turning off the computer. By default, the keyboard password is the same as the power-on password. Use the KP.EXE utility to assign a different keyboard password. To further protect your data, KP.EXE has an option that clears the screen before locking the keyboard. If you do not specify a different keyboard password, entering the power-on password unlocks the keyboard and allows access to the computer. Note: The keyboard password is removed each time you turn off the computer. Follow these steps to lock the keyboard with KP.EXE: 1. Be sure you are in the drive and directory containing KP.EXE. Also, be sure you are at the MS-DOS operating system prompt. 2. At the system prompt, enter one of four kp commands: * To lock the keyboard with the current keyboard password, type kp and press . * To clear the screen and lock the keyboard with the current keyboard password, type kp /b and press . * To specify a new keyboard password, type kp /c and press . The system prompts you for a new password, and lock the keyboard, type kp /b /c and press . The system prompts you for a new password, clears the screen, and locks the keyboard. 3. If you chose to specify a unique keyboard password, type the password, using the BACKSPACE key to correct any errors. Then, press . The following prompt appears: Is this correct? (Y/N/ESC) _ 4. If the password is correct, type Y and press . * If the password is not correct, type N and press . Try entering the desired password again. * If you want to cancel the keyboard password utility, press ESC to return to the MS-DOS prompt.
