4000 LX (250-5100) SETUP Faxback Doc. #1504 Your computer contains a battery-powered, real-time CMOS RAM chip that stores information about the drives, memory, and video support installed in your system. You must record your computer's hardware configuration into the memory of the RAM chip for the computer to function properly. Use the Setup utility to record your current system configuration into CMOS RAM. The battery that powers the CMOS RAM also supplies power to the internal clock. The clock maintains current date and time information. If the system clock fails to keep accurate time, it might indicate that the CMOS RAM battery is weak. If you need to replace the battery, contact a Radio Shack Service Center or refer to "Replacing the Battery" in the "Installing Optional Hardware" section. You must run the Setup utility each time you: * Install or remove a video display adapter, an optional diskette drive or hard disk drive, or memory * Change the CPU clock speed * Replace the CMOS RAM battery The computer stores the hardware configuration record in memory until the battery fails or you change the information with the Setup utility. NOTE: under normal use, the battery configuration should last three years before you need to replace it. Because the CMOS RAM chip uses the battery only when the computer is turned off, storing the computer for long periods of time shortens the life of the battery. To run Setuplx, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Utilities diskette into the primary drive (the upper diskette drive) with the label facing up. The diskette clicks into place. 2. Turn on the computer. The following prompt appears on the screen: BIOS ROM version xx.xx.xx Compatibility Software (C) 198x Phoenix Software Associates Ltd., All Rights Reserved Licensed to Tandy Corp. 000640k Base Memory, 01024k Expansion Invalid configuration information - please run SETUPLX program Strike the F1 key to continue The Tandy 4000 LX sounds a short beep when you turn it on. It sounds a long beep or a series of short beeps as a warning signal. If the computer sounds a warning and then prompts you to run Setuplx when you turn on the power, it is a signal that there is a configuration problem. (The computer sounds a warning the first time you turn it on because you have not yet run setuplx.) 3. Press the F1 function key. This message appears on the screen: Phoenix Software Asc. Follow the instructions on the screens. 5. The last screen is for describing your hardware configuration. Because your system has never been set, answer no (N) at each prompt, and select the correct response from the choices offered. You need to know the following information to complete the configuration: * The diskette drive types for the primary and secondary diskette drives * The hard disk drive types for the primary and secondary hard drives. * System base memory. * Expansion memory * The primary video board Keep a current list of this hardware information in the "System Worksheet" section on the inside back cover of this manual. The following two system configurations are examples of the final setup screens for two Tandy 4000 LX configurations: If you have only one diskette drive, no memory upgrade, and a monochrome monitor, the setup screen should look like this when you finish making your selections: Diskette Drive A: is 1.44M Diskette Drive B: is NONE Fixed Disk Drive C: NOT INSTALLED Fixed Disk Drive D: NOT INSTALLED System Base Memory is 640K Expansion Memory is 1024K Prime Video Adapter is MONOCHROME CPU Speed is 20 MHz Bus Speed is 10 MHz If you have one diskette drive, a 20MB hard disk, and an 80-column color monitor, the setup screen should look like this when you finish your selections: Diskette Drive A: is 1.44M Diskette Drive B: is NONE Fixed Disk Drive C: 2 Fixed Disk Drive D: NOT INSTALLED System Base Memory is 640K Expansion Memory is 1024K Prime Video Adapter is COLOR (80 COL) CPU Speed is 20 MHz Bus Speed is 10 MHz Note: The number that you use at the fixed disk drive c: prompt is the Drive Type Number indicated on the hard disk drive. 6.
