4016 SX (250-4901) Installing A Floppy Disk Drive Faxback Doc. # 1568 Your system supports up to three drives (two diskette drives and one hard drive or two hard drives and one diskette drive). Use only one-inch high, 3-1/2 inch devices in the two upper drive bays. The lower drive bay is universal and can hold any half-height 5-1/4 inch or 3-1/2 inch device. Note: The instructions in this section are for general information only. Refer to the drive installation guide that accompanies your diskette or tape drive for additional instructions and information. After installing a new drive, run the Setup utility to update the system configuration. Notes to Tape Drive or Disk Cartridge Owners: * Check with the trained technicians at a Radio Shack Service Center before you install a tape or disk cartridge system. Some tape and disk cartridge systems require additional hardware for proper installation. * Only the lower drive bay supports a tape or disk drive cartridge system. Refer to Installing a 5-1/4 Inch Drive. Installing a 3-1/2 inch drive: 1. Adjust the selector switches and terminating resistors on the drive as necessary. See the drive installation guide for more information. 2. Open the computer to gain access to the 3-1/2 inch drive bay in the carriage. 3. If the drive is a diskette drive, remove the plastic insert from the front of the computer cover. 4. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the drive. Refer to the drive installation guide. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the carriage. Use the front set of holes to mount a diskette drive; use the rear set of holes to mount a hard drive. 5. Slide the drive into the 3-1/2 inch drive bay. With the drive resting on the center rail, align the appropriate mounting holes on the drive with the two mounting holes on the side of the carriage. A diskette drive should extend approximately one-half inch from the opening. 6. Secure the drive, using the screws included in your drive kit. 7. Connect the appropriate drive cable(s) to the main logic board, following the instructions in your drive installation guide. Installing a 5-1/4 inch drive: 1. Adjust the selector switches and terminating resistors on the drive as necessary. See the drive installation guide for more information. 2. Open the computer to gain access to the 5-1/4 inch drive bay in the carriage. 3. If the drive is a diskette drive, remove the appropriate plastic panel from the computer cover. 4. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the drive. Refer to the drive installation guide. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the carriage. Use the front set of holes to mount a diskette drive; use the rear set of holes to mount a hard drive. Note: Contact the trained technicians at a Radio Shack Service Center before installing a tape or disk cartridge system in the 5-1/4 inch drive bay. 5. Slide the drive into the 5-1/4 inch drive bay. Align the appropriate mounting holes on the drive with the three mounting holes on the bottom of the carriage. 6. Secure the drive, using the screws included in your drive kit. 7. Connect the appropriate drive cable(s) to the main logic board, following the instructions in the drive installation guide.
