2500 SX/33 (250-1623) Disk Mastering Faxback Doc. # 1751 The 2500 SX/33 is the first Tandy computer to offer "Disk Mastering" on the hard disk drive. The "Disk Mastering Utility" provides the end user a method for making mirror image copies of the original installation diskettes. The Disk Mastering utility should be the first Icon selected when first turning on your computer. These utilities will make the "Master" diskettes for Windows 3.1 and Works 2.0, since these disks are not included with the system. 1. The diskettes that are included are: The customer should receive three (3) diskettes with the unit. 2 MS-DOS 5.0 disks 1 Utilities and VGA Drivers disk. NOTE: The Utilities and VGA Drivers disk will allow the user to configure for super vga modes*. There are no additional driver disks needed to support SVGA video modes. The video chip on the 2500 SX/33 is a Cirrus Logic video chip and is different than the previous Western Digital video chip used on other 2500 series computers. Do not use any other SVGA drivers than the ones supplied on the Utilities and VGA Drivers Disk. *(Super VGA requires 512K Video Memory) 2. To start the Disk Mastering process, use the two disk mastering icons for Windows and Works. The icons are located in the Making Master Diskettes group of Windows. One README.TXT icon is available for an explanation of disk mastering. Below is the information from the README.TXT file: Making Master Diskettes It is important to make master diskettes for each software package factory-installed on your hard drive. Keep the diskettes in a safe place. You might need to reinstall the software from these diskettes. The procedure for making master diskettes has three steps. -- copying the master files from the hard drive to the diskettes -- checking the diskettes to be sure the master files copied correctly -- removing the master files from the hard drive to clear hard disk space (This does not remove the working copy of the software.) Simple instructions guide you through each step. Once you have made master copies of your software, delete the Making Master Diskettes group and the C:\DISKS directory. Exit this screen by selecting Exit from the File menu. Then, double click on a Make Masters program item to begin making master diskettes for that software package. 3. Diskettes do not have to be formatted before making the master copies. The Disk Mastering Utility will prompt the user through each step and notify the user if there are any problems. The user will need ten (10) 1.44 MB disks to create all master disks. Below is a list of the disks that will be created by the Disk Mastering Utility: For Windows: You need six, 3 1/2-inch, high-density diskettes. Label the diskettes as follows: Diskette Label Diskette Label 1 Microsoft Windows 2 Microsoft Windows Ver. No. 3.1 Ver. No. 3.1 DISK 1 DISK 2 Setup 3 Microsoft Windows 4 Microsoft Windows Ver. The Disk Mastering Utility is started by batch files located in the C:\DISKS directory of the hard drive. To make the appropriate master disks, simply change directory to the disks you wish to create and type in the batch file name. Below is an example of the process: Note: There are three directories and three batch files that may be used. Directory Name Disk Mastering Batch File c:\disks\windows menuwind.bat c:\disks\works menuwork.bat c:\disks\wrkapps menuwkap.bat The c:\disks\windows directory will be used for this example. 1. Exit the Windows application. This will take you to a DOS prompt. 2. If you are not already at the C: prompt, type in: cd C:\ and press 3. Change directories to the WINDOWS directory by typing in: cd C:\disks\windows and press 4. Start the Disk Mastering Utility by typing in: menuwin and press 5. The menus will prompt the user exactly the same as if started from the Window icon. 5. The software license agreement for the machine is included with the CPU's owners manual. The page includes the one year warranty information as well as the software licensing information.
