2820 HD (250-3553) Battery Information Faxback Doc. # 1825 Note: Replacement battery for this CPU is (25-3526). CAUTIONS: * Be sure you install all optional devices before you turn on your computer. * To prevent overheating, keep a reasonable clearance space around the computer and any optional device(s). * Avoid extreme temperature and humidity changes when you use, store, or transport your computer. Power Sources: You can power your computer from the supplied AC adapter or from the rechargeable battery. With a fully charged battery, you can power the com- puter for up to about 3 1/2 hours. The maximum operation time varies, depending on the options you install, the backlight brightness, and the amount of diskette and hard drive access. The battery comes fully dis- charged, so charge it before you use battery power. Note: You must immediately install and charge the supplied battery pack, as described in "Getting Started" before you can operate your computer from the battery. Failure to do this can greatly reduce the battery's life and efficiency. Using the AC Adapter and Charging the Battery: The following procedure tells you how to install the battery and how to connect the AC adapter that powers the computer and charges the battery. CAUTIONS: * Use only the supplied AC adapter. Using a different adapter might damage the battery and the computer. * Unplug the AC adapter before you connect it to or disconnect it from the computer. * Remove the battery if you operate the computer from AC power and the battery does not need recharging. Continuously operating the computer from AC power with a fully charged battery installed lowers the battery's life. Follow these steps to install the rechargeable battery and connect the AC adapter. 1. Place the computer on a flat, level surface. 2. Slide the battery into the battery compartment. 3. Insert the AC adapter's connector into the DC IN 16V jack. Then, plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet and let the battery fully charge before you use the computer on battery power. You can immediately begin using the computer on AC power. Notes: * The battery charges in about 2-4 hours, depending on the computer's activity. * The battery discharges slightly if the AC adapter is connected to the DC IN 16V jack but not to an AC outlet. * The AC adapter does not charge the battery when the diskette drive turns on. Battery charging resumes when the diskette drive turns off. * Eventually, a battery loses its ability to maintain a charge. When this occurs, replace the battery with the same type of battery. Fully charge the new battery before you use it. * To make a rechargeable battery last as long as possible, let it fully discharge about once a month by operating the computer until the BATT indicator lights red and the computer automatically turns off. Then, recharge the battery. * As a reminder that the battery is fully charged, set the battery's charge indicator switch so that it hides the red dot. Set the switch to the other position if the battery needs recharging. This is not an automatic feature. Low-Battery Indications: The computer's BATT indicator and beeper tell you the condition of the battery. The following chart shows you the meanings of each indication: INDICATION MEANING BATT indicator is orange. Battery is charging. BATT indicator is green. Battery is fully charged. BATT indicator does not light The AC adapter is not plugged in. Battery operation is normal. BATT indicator is red & a tone Battery power is below the level required sounds about once a minute.* for normal operation. BATT indicator is red during If no tone sounds and the indicator turns normal disk operations. off when the hard disk turns off, the battery still has plenty of power. BATT indicator is orange and The battery is not installed or there flashes. might be a problem with the battery and/or charging circuit. * When the BATT indicator lights red and the tone begins sounding, immediately save your information to the hard disk or a diskette. The computer turns off automatically after about 5 minutes. If you want to continue using the computer, connect the AC adapter or install another battery, first save any information. Then, connect the AC adapter before you remove the discharged battery. This prevents you from losing information not saved to the computer's hard disk if the power automatically turns off because of low battery power. After you replace the battery, remove the AC adapter. CAUTIONS: * Do not incinerate the battery. * Do not directly connect the battery's negative and positive terminals to each other. * Do not store the battery in high temperature locations for extended periods.
