TANDY 2500 RSX (250-1620/1621) Additional Drives Faxback Doc. # 1887 Three storage devices can be installed in the drive bays. The two upper bays support low-profile (maximum height, 1") 3 1/2" devices. The lower bay supports a half-height, 5 1/4" device or a standard 3 1/2" device. * Install internal hard drives in the 3 1/2" bay, the 5 1/4" drive bay, or the expansion adapter area. The SmartDrive (IDE hard drive) connector in your computer supports up to two internal hard drives. * Install diskette drives in the 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" drive bay. * To remove the 3 1/2" panel, press down on the center tab from inside the cover. This panel is replaceable. * To remove the 5 1/4" panel, press down on the panel from outside the cover. If you install a hard drive that is not a SmartDrive, you need to install an expansion adapter for the drive. Refer to the drive and adapter document- ation for instructions. Some installations required additional mounting hardware. For example, you might need to purchase a 3 1/2" to 5 1/4" disk drive adapter and an L-bracket to install some 3 1/2" drives in the 5 1/4" bay. Mounting hardware is available at your computer dealer. Installing a 3 1/2" Diskette Drive: Use the following procedure to install a 3 1/2" diskette drive: 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 3 1/2" drive bay. 2. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the diskette drive. 3. Slide the drive into the 3 1/2" drive bay. With the drive resting on the center rail, align the mounting holes on the side of the drive with the two mounting holes on the side of the carriage. 4. Mount the diskette drive in the bay by installing four screws as illustrated. Remove the plastic card from the 5 1/4" bay. To install one of the bottom screws, you must insert the screwdriver through the hole in the 5 1/4" bay. 5. Loosen the diskette drive bale connector from the cable attached to the factory-installed diskette drive. Pin 1 of the connector is labeled. Align Pin 1 of the cable connector with Pin 1 of the drive connector on the back of the diskette drive. Then, attach the cable connector to the drive connector. 6. Run the setup utility to complete the installation. Installing a 3 1/2" Hard Drive: Use the following procedure to install a 3 1/2" hard drive. Refer to the drive installation guide for instructions on adjusting drive components, connecting the drive cable, and selecting mounting holes on the drive. You will also need information from the drive installation guide to run the setup utility after installing the drive. 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 3 1/2" drive bay. 2. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the drive. 3. Slide the drive into the 3 1/2" drive bay. With the drive resting on the center rail, align the mounting holes on the side of the drive with the two mounting holes on the side of the carriage. 4. Mount the drive in the bay by installing the screws from the side and bottom. 5. If you are installing a Smartdrive, attach the remaining cable connector to the SmartDrive connector on the main logic board. If you are install- ing any other type of hard drive, refer to the drive documentation for instructions. 6. Attach a power cable from the computer power supply to the drive. 7. Run the setup utility to update your system configuration by identifying the drive. CAUTION: After installing the hard drive, it might be necessary to park the drive heads before opening the carriage or moving the computer. Refer to the drive documentation for this information. Installing a 5 1/4" Drive: Use the following procedure to install a 5 1/4" drive. 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" drive bay in the carriage. 2. If you are installing a diskette drive or a CD-ROM drive, remove the plastic card from the bottom of the 5 1/4" bay and remove the panel from the computer cover. 3. Select the appropriate mounting holes for the drive. Refer to your drive documentation. 4. Slide the drive into the bay. Align the appropriate mounting holes in the drive with the three mounting holes on the bottom of the carriage. 5. Mount the drive in the bottom of the carriage, using the screws included in your drive kit. 6. If you are installing a diskette drive, loosen the second diskette drive connector from the cable attached to the factory-installed diskette drive. Pin 1 of the cable connector is indicated by a stripe on the cable. Refer to the drive documentation to locate Pin 1 of the connector on back of the diskette drive. Align Pin 1 of the cable connector with Pin 1 of the diskette drive connector. Then, press the cable connector onto the diskette drive connector. To install a SmartDrive: * Install the drive as described in "Installing a 3 1/2" Hard Drive." To install a 3 1/2" SmartDrive in the 5 1/4" bay, use the mounting holes on the bottom of the drive. * Connect a SmartDrive data/controller cable between the SmartDrive and the 40-pin SmartDrive connector on the main logic board. The cable supports up to two SmartDrives. The SmartDrive cable and connector are keyed to ensure that the connectors are aligned properly. * Connect a power cable from the power supply to the power connector on the hard drive. To connect an unkeyed IDE cable, align Pin 1 of the cable connector with Pin 1 of the main logic board connector. Refer to "Main Logic Board Layout" to locate the SmartDrive connector. The drive cable might have a stripe to indicate Pin 1 of the cable connector. Pin 1 of the main logic board connector is indicated by a dot or a 1 printed on the board. After installing a SmartDrive (or any hard disk drive), run the setup utility to update your system configuration. Adding a Hard Drive: There are three options to use in setting up or changing the system configuration for hard drives. Choose one of the following: * When you install a hard drive, record the drive type number and the drive parameters, (such as the number of cylinders and heads). Run the setup utility and match the configuration to the list provided. * If an exact match to your configuration is not available, choose the Any (Non-standard Hard Disk) and enter your drive parameters. * The setup utility for the computer includes and AUTO option that enables the system to automatically configure an IDE drive for use. If you select AUTO, there is no need to enter cylinder, sector, or other specific configuration parameters to configure a drive with setup. The AUTO options does not support all drives.
