8-bit SmartDrive Adapter (25-1088) Installation Faxback Doc. # 2034 INITIALIZATION Before you can use the SmartDrive, you must initialize it by creating one or more partitions. then, you must format each partition of the drive to prepare it to store and access the operating system and other files. The method for initializing the SmartDrive depends on whether your computer has DeskMate 3.0 or later in ROM. Follow the appropriate procedure below. FORMATTING THE HARD DRIVE IN A COMPUTER WITH DESKMATE 3.0 OR LATER IN ROM The Tandy 1000SL, SL/2, TL, TL/2, and TL/3 are examples of computers that have DeskMate 3.0 or later in ROM. For these computers, the most convenient and recommended initialization method is the DeskMate hinstall.pdm program. You will need the SmartDrive Backup Installation Diskette to complete the following procedure. If you need help with DeskMate, refer to the documentation included with your computer. 1. At the DeskMate desktop, press [TAB] until the Programs box is highlighted. 2. Press the down arrow until the program HINSTALL.PDM is highlighted. 3. Press [ENTER]. 4. As each prompt is displayed, press [ENTER] to continue, or press [ESC] to exit from the HINSTALL programs. NOTE: If the Programs box is not on your desktop, press [F2], highlight RUN, press [ENTER], and type c:\hinstall.pdm and press [ENTER]. FORMATTING THE HARD DRIVE IN A COMPUTER WITHOUT DESKMATE 3.0 OR LATER IN ROM Before you begin formatting your hard drive, locate your MS-DOS Version 3.0 or later diskette(s). The three steps for preparing your hard drive are: 1. Initialize the hard drive. 2. Partition the hard drive. 3. Format the hard drive. The following instructions are for 20 and 40 MB hard drives. Put your MS-DOS diskette in Drive A and reset the computer. At the A prompt, type "HSECT" and press [ENTER] (if you see "Bad command or file name," insert your Supplemental Programs diskette in Drive A and re-type "HSECT"). Your screen should show: HARD DISK FORMAT Version 01.02.00 @ Copyright Tandy Corporation All Rights Reserved Which hard drive do you want to format (C/D)? Type "C" and press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Do you want to continue (Y/N)? Type "Y" and press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Do you want to flag defective tracks (Y/N)? The 20 and 40 MB drives do not require this step. Type "N" and press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Enter interleave factor. Press [ENTER] to use default value. Valid values are 2-8. Type "7" and press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Formatting... The drive is now low-level formatting, or initializing. It will take up to 15 minutes for this to complete. After completion, your screen should show: Format Completed! Your system then returns you to the "A" prompt. Type "FDISK" and press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Program Version 3.30' @ Copyright Microsoft Corp. FDISK Options Current Fixed Disk Drive: Choose one of the following: 1. Create DOS Partition 2. Change Active Partition 3. Delete DOS Partition 4. Display Partition Information Enter Choice: [1] Press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Create DOS Partition Current Fixed Disk Drive: 1 1. Create Primary DOS Partition 2. Create Extended DOS Partition Enter Choice: [1] Press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: Create Primary DOS Partition Create Fixed Disk Drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum size for a DOS partition and make the DOS partition active (Y/N).....? [Y] Press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: System will now restart. Insert DOS diskette in drive A: Press any key when ready... Make sure your MS-DOS startup diskette is in Drive A, then press [ENTER]. After re-booting, you will be returned to the "A" prompt. Type "FORMAT C:/s" and press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: WARNING: ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST. Proceed with Format (Y/N)? Type "Y" and press [ENTER]. After formatting is complete, your screen should show: Format complete System transferred and a message indicating disk space available for use. If you have a 20 MB hard drive, you are now finished with formatting. Congratulations! FORMATTING OF EXTENDED PARTITION FOR 40 MEGABYTE SMARTDRIVES If you are formatting a 40 megabyte drive in a computer without a ROM drive, you will format drive D instead of drive E. If you have a 40 MB hard drive, please complete the following operations: At the "A" prompt, type "FDISK" and press [ENTER]. Enter logical drive size.........: [xxx] Press [ENTER]. Your screen should show: All available space in Extended DOS partition is assigned to logical drives. Make sure your MS-DOS startup diskette is in Drive A, then press [ENTER]. After re-booting, you will be returned to the "A" prompt. Type "FORMAT E:" and press [ENTER]. You screen should show: WARNING: ALL DATA WILL BE LOST ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST Proceed with Format (Y/N)? Type "Y" and press [ENTER]. After formatting is complete, your screen should show: Format complete and a message indicating disk space available for use. Your 40 MB hard drive is now ready for use. Congratulations.
