SVGA Windows (250-4055) Hints and Tips Faxback Doc. # 2184 Accelerator Adapter Systems with Built-in Video: Some IBM-compatible systems include on-board video functions. Special considerations must be made if the video adapter is being installed in such a system. To use the complete range of compatible video modes available with the SVGA adapter, disable the system's built-in video function. This procedure might require removing an expansion adapter or changing some DIP switch or jumper settings on the main logic board. Refer to the computer user's guide or check with the dealer or manufacturer for more information. If the compatible system has a built-in video function that is equivalent to monochrome adapter or a color/graphics adapter, you might be able to use the built-in video as if it were a standard monochrome or color/graphics adapter. Some systems have a built-in video function that is compatible with the Hercules graphics standard. Such video can co-exist with the SVGA adapter when configured for MDA memory mapping (sometimes referred to as "diag" mode) or the equivalent of Hercules HGC HALF graphics mode. In general, treat Hercules-compatible adapters like standard monochrome adapters. Note: Software that requires the Hercules HGC FULL graphics mode cannot be used. Systems with an 8514/A-Compatible Video Adapter: You can connect the SVGA adapter to an 8514/A-compatible adapter using a 26-pin pass-through cable attached to the video feature connector on the SVGA adapter. Contact your computer dealer for the required cable. Mouse Considerations: Changing video standard is often simply a matter of running VGAMODE and choosing the desired setting. However, if you mouse driver is installed through the CONFIG.SYS file or if the mouse is controlled by a program such as MOUSE.COM, you might need to restart the computer after choosing a video standard. EMS Driver Considerations: The SVGA adapter uses memory locations B0000-B7FFF for monochrome mapping. If your EMS software uses this memory range, either reconfigure the EMS driver or do not switch to monochrome mapping. (smm/jej-05/11/94)
