540MB SCSI Hard Disk (250-4168) Initialization Faxback Doc. # 2560 INITIALIZING THE DRIVE After you install the drive, run the setup utility for your computer. Select SCSI or NONE as the drive type. Before you can use this drive, you must initialize it by creating one or more partitions. Then, you must format each partition of the drive to prepare it to store and access the operating system and other files. NOTE: Low-level formatting of the drive is not necessary. The drive was low-level formatted at the factory. Follow these steps to initialize the hard drive if you are using MS-DOS: 1. After you start up the system from an MS-DOS system diskette, use the fdisk command to partition the hard drive. (If you are using another operating system, refer to your operating system documentation for information about formatting hard disks.) If you use MS-DOS 3.3 (or an earlier version) and you hard disk has a capacity greater than 32MB, you must include at least two partitions (usually c:\ and d:\) to store data above the 32MB boundary. If you use MS-DOS 5.0 and your BIOS recognizes the full capacity of your hard disk drive, you can select the entire capacity as one partition. 2. Use the format command to format each partition. Format the active partition with the /s switch (format c:/s) to copy the MS-DOS system files to the partition and make it bootable. 3. Use the copy command to copy the remaining files from: * utilities diskettes * operating system diskettes 4. Remove the diskette from Drive A, and reset the computer to start up from the hard drive. Refer to your MS-DOS documentation for specific information about the fdisk, format, and copy commands. Refer to your computer user's guide or CD drive installation guide if your operating system or utilities are on CD-ROM. (smm/jej-05/11/94)
