MMPC Model 10/20 (250-1640/41) Audio Options Faxback Doc. # 2569 Setting Up Audio Options Use the connectors on the audio adapter to connect optional audio devices. Use the CD-ROM drive to load CDs. CD-ROM Drive Audio To listen to audio CDs in privacy, connect headphones to the jack on the front panel of the CD-ROM drive. Turn the volume control to adjust the volume of a CD. Press the volume control to skip to the next track of a CD. > Note: The headphone jack on the CD-ROM drive is for listening to CD audio. To listen to other audio sources, connect the headphones to the connector on the audio adapter. > Caution: The CD-ROM drive is factory-configured for proper operation with your system. If you later add other devices to your system, confirm that no port address or interrupt set for device causes a conflict with the CD-ROM drive settings. The interrupt channel and port address for the CD-ROM drive are set by jumpers on the audio adapter. Refer to the "Audio Adapter Appendix" for more information. Connecting Options to the Audio Adapter The audio adapter is installed in the bottom expansion slot. The adapter's connectors and volume control are accessible from the back panel of the computer. Connect external devices to the audio adapter connectors as illustrated: Connecting a Joystick Connect a joystick to the joystick connector of an optional MIDI/joystick cable if you want to use a MIDI device and the joystick. If you are not using a MIDI/joystick cable, you can connect a standard 15-pin joystick cable to the MIDI/joystick connector on the adapter. See your computer dealer to purchase a cable. > Note: If you install an adapter with a game port, you must disable the joystick port on the audio adapter. To disable the adapter's joystick port, refer to the audio adapter appendix. Connecting Speakers You can connect speakers to the Line-Out connector of the audio adapter. The audio adapter generates 4 watts when connected to 4-ohm speakers and 2 watts when connected to 8-ohm speakers. Do not set the volume level to maximum unless your speakers can handle the maximum unless your speakers can handle the maximum power output. Headphone Safety You can connect headphones to the Line-Out connector of the audio adapter. Before you put on headphones, set the volume to a low level. After you put on headphones, slowly adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. > Warning: Listen with the volume at a moderate level. Extended high-volume listening can cause permanent hearing loss. Because your ears become less sensative to sound as you become accustomed to a volume level, exercise caution when increasing volume after a period of listening. Volume levels that do not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Adjusting Volume You can adjust the volume of the sound that is output through the audio adapter with the adapter volume control. This control is the master volume control for all connected audio devices. Adjust the adapter volume to a moderate level before adjusting the volume with any other source (such as a connected amplifier or an audio application). Connecting an Optional MIDI Device Use an optional Sound Blaster MIDI or MIDI/joystick cable to connect a MIDI device to the Joystick/MIDI connector in the audio adapter. If you use an optional MIDI/joystick cable to connect a MIDI device to the audio adapter, you can use the cable's joystick connector to attach an optional joystick at the same time. See your computer dealer to purchase a cable. To connect an optional MIDI device such as a keyboard: * Connect the cable labeled MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN connector of the MIDI device. * Connect the cable labeled MIDI IN to the MIDI OUT connector of the MIDI device.
