FaxModem (250-3542) Installation Faxback Doc. # 2588 This fax/modem is specially designed to fit into your notebook computer. Before installing the fax/modem, be sure to turn off the power to your notebook computer. Also remove the AC adapter power cable and the NiCad battery. Make sure that your work area is free of static electricity. Wearing a grounding wrist strap is also recommended. Do not remove the modem from its static proof bag until you begin the installation. Handle components as little as possible, and hold the modem card only by its edges. 1. Remove the cover of your notebook computer's expansion space. 2. Locate the modem connector inside the expansion space. The modem connector is identified in your notebook computer's user's manual. 3. If you have an integrated trackball installed in your notebook computer, remove the cable that connects the trackball to the modem connector. (When a modem is installed, the trackball cable is re-routed through a connector located on the edge of the modem card). 4. Carefully cut away the plastic tab covering the telephone socket. Be sure to trim all the plastic cleanly off the socket's edges. 5. Holding the modem card with the solder side facing up, connect the cable from the modem to the modem connector in the computer. The red wire of the connecting cable should be connected to pin 1, on the left side (phone socket side) of your notebook computer. 6. If you have a trackball installed in your computer, disconnect the cable from the computer and connect the trackball cable to the trackball connector on the edge of the modem card. 7. After the modem has been correctly connected to the notebook computer, place the modem inside the notebook computer's expansion space. The modem card should be installed with the component side facing downwards and the solder side facing upwards. Place the modem on the short ledges provided in the expansion space to support the modem. These ledges have angled support struts which fit into the notches on either side of the modem card. Slide the right rear corner of the modem card under the downward sloping wedge at the back of the expansion space to secure the fax/modem in position. 8. Replace the expansion space cover. Then replace the NiCad battery and verify that your computer, modem (and trackball) all operate normally. 9. Plug one end of the supplied modular telephone cord into the telephone jack on the side of the computer. Then plug the other end of the cord into a standard modular telephone jack. If your phone lines do not have modular phone jacks, you can either update your phone line's wiring, using jacks or adapters available at your local Radio Shack store, or you can have the telephone company update the wiring for you. Note: The telephone company may charge you for the installation of necessary jacks. The telephone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ-11C, or RJ-11W for a wall installation. (smm/jej-05/11/94)
