ZPDA (250-3100) Batteries Faxback Doc. # 2638 Your unit is shipped with three AA batteries for main power and two CR2032 lithium button cell batteries for memory backup already installed. BATTERY LIFE NOTE: Use of Lithium batteries versus Alkaline batteries in the Z-PDA, will NOT effect battery life or performance in this device. There are no significant differences in operating life between alkalines and lithium batteries. The life of the battery that comes with the unit starts when the battery is loaded at the factory. The life you get from the battery might be shorter than normal because of the time the unit spends on transport and on the shelf. Main Battery Life: Approximately 100 hours Backup Battery Life: 5 years if main batteries replaced as soon as they become weak. 2 months if dead main batteries are left in the unit. We recommend you not use rechargeable batteries to power your unit, and never try to recharge the supplied batteries. Replace the main batteries: - Whenever the unit displays a low battery power message. - If the screen remains blank when you turn on power or reset the unit. - Every year, regardless of how often you use it. - Replace the backup batteries at least once every five years, or when the unit displays a low-backup battery power message. Put a reminder in the DATE BOOK to let you know when to replace the batteries. To save power, the display automatically turns off if you do not use it for six minutes. To turn it back on, pull the power switch toward the bottom of the unit. When you turn it back on, it returns to the application you were using. Note: You can change the automatic turn off time. See Chapter 11. HINTS Incorrectly installing the batteries can cause them to burst or leak and damage the unit. Observe the following precautions when you install batteries. - Be sure to observe proper polarity (+ and -) when you install the batteries. - Never mix batteries of different types. - Never mix old and new batteries. - Never leave weak or dead batteries in the unit. - Do not expose the batteries to direct heat, let them become shorted, or try to take them apart. - If a battery leaks, immediately clean out the unit's battery compartment. Take care to avoid having the battery fluid touch your skin. If it does so, flush skin thoroughly with water. - Keep batteries out of the reach of small children. If swallowed, consult with a physician immediately. MAIN BATTERIES The unit uses three AA batteries for main power. For longest life, we recommend you use alkaline batteries. To replace the main batteries: 1. Turn off the power. 2. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction indicated by the arrow. 3. While pressing down on the lock switch, slide the lock switch and main battery cover in the direction indicated by the arrow. The main battery cover also moves when you move the switch. 4. Remove the main battery cover. 5. Remove the old batteries and replace them with new ones. 6. Place the main battery cover over the batteries. The square cut-out on the cover should fit over the raised square on the lock switch. 7. Return the lock switch to its original position. The main battery cover also moves. 8. Replace the battery compartment cover by sliding it into place. Note: If you do not correctly return the main battery cover and the lock switch to their original positions, you can not close the battery compartment cover. BACKUP BATTERIES The unit uses two lithium batteries (CR2032) to protect the information in its memory when the main batteries are removed or dead. Replace the batteries at least once every five years, or when the unit displays a low battery message. Caution: To prevent possible loss of information, do not remove the backup batteries and the main batteries at the same time. To replace the backup batteries: 1. Turn the power off. 2. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction indicated by the arrow. 3. Remove the two screws that hold the backup battery cover in place, and then remove the cover. 4. Remove the old batteries and replace them with new ones, making sure that their positive (+) sides are facing up. 5. Replace the backup battery cover and secure it with two screws. 6. Replace the battery compartment cover by sliding it back into place. (clh-09/28/93)
