PC Sound System Plus (250-1701) Settings Faxback Doc. # 2662 SETTING THE ENVIRONMENT STRING: You must include an environment string in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file * for your PC and Sound Power to work together and run certain software. The SETUP ENVIRONMENT option automatically sets the environment string in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you are running Sound Power 2.0 for the first time, or whenever there is a change in your environment settings (I/O address, Interrupt, or DMA Channels), you must use the SETUP ENVIRONMENT option to update the environment string. *Review your DOS manual for a better understanding of AUTOEXEC.BAT procedures. To update the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, select the SETUP ENVIRONMENT option from the Diagnostics screen, and press ENTER. This screen appears, prompting your for confirmation to update. Press Y, followed by ENTER. The system reboots. CONFIGURING THE BOARD; There are three configurable jumpers on Sound Power 2.0 that you can change: I/O Address (J1) GAME I/O Port (J2) IRQ Line Selector (JP1) For the locations of these jumpers, refer to the illustration of Page 4. Any time you change the I/O Address setting (J1) and the IRQ Line Selector (JP1), you must update your environment setup by following the procedures in "Setting the Environment String" on Page 8. SETTING THE I/O ADDRESS: Sound Power 2.0 uses a range of your PC's I/O port addresses to transfer data. The I/O addresses are selected by configuring jumper J1. The default range of addresses starts at 220H. However, if this range conflicts with another device, you can select another address, starting at 240H. The following table shows how you can set jumper J1 to its two possible settings. JUMPER J1 SETTINGS Pins 2-3 closed I/O address starts at 240H Pins 1-2 closed* I/O address starts at 220H * default setting. Any time you change the I/O address setting (J1), you must update your environment settings. See "Setting the Environment String" on Page 8. ENABLING\DISABLING THE GAME PORT: Sound Power 2.0's game port is the same as a standard PC Game Control Adapter. You can connect any standard IBM PC-compatible analog joystick that has a 15-pin D-subminiature connector. If you already have a game port on your PC, ou might want to disable the game port on Sound Power 2.0 By changing the pin configuration on jumper J2, you can either enable or disable the game port. The table shows the possible settings for JumperJ2. JUMPERS J2 SETTINGS Pins 1-2 closed * Game Port enabled Pins 2-3 closed Game Port disabled *default setting. SETTING THE IRQ LINE: The sound board requires an interrupt line to facilitate DMA (Direct Memory Access) transfers. You can select this interrupt line by configuring jumper block JP1. The table below shows the available interrupt channels and the pin positions that enable each interrupt. JUMPER BLOCK JP1 SETTINGS Pins IRQ7 close * Interrupt line IRQ7 is enabled Pins IRQ5 open * for DMA transfers Pins IRQ3 open * Pins IRQ2 open * Pins IRQ7 open Interrupt line IRQ5 is enabled Pins IRQ5 close for DMA transfers Pins IRQ3 open Pins IRQ2 open Pins IRQ7 open Interrupt line IRQ3 is enabled Pins IRQ5 open for DMA transfers Pins IRQ3 close Pins IRQ2 open Pins IRQ7 open Interrupt line IRQ2 is enabled Pins IRQ5 open for DMA transfers Pins IRQ3 open Pins IRQ2 close NOTE: The board layout will reflect the fact that the top jumper is IRQ7. NOT IRQ2. Any time you change the IRQ Line Selector (JP1), follow the environment setup procedure in "Setting the Environment String" on Page 8. NOTE: Some computers do not allow you to use IRQ7. Use IRQ 5 on these systems. (jlc-10/12/93)
