The computer can have an end-user password (a User password) and a system administrator password (an Admin password.). The User password restricts access to the computer. It may be used in any of three ways: * Boot: The computer starts only after the User password is typed. Once the computer is running, a user can lock the keyboard on command, and must enter the password again before using the computer. * Server: The computer starts, but the keyboard locks until the User password is typed. * Walk-and-lock security: The keyboard locks when the computer has been inactive (the keyboard and mouse have not been used) for a period of time specified by the user. Optionally, the screen blanks as well. The system can be used only after the user password has been typed. An Admin password enables a system administrator to limit or prevent others from using the System Setup program. Creating or Changing an Administrator or User Password To create an admin password, order System Setup file, Faxback Doc. # 2774. 1. From the Main menu, select Admin Security. 2. The Admin Security menu appears; move the cursor to the Admin Password field. 3. Use the left or right arrow key to select Enable, then press . 4. The cursor moves to the Enter the Password field. type the password you want to use. No characters appear on screen as you type, so that other people cannot see the password. As you type, follow these rules: Create a password of one to eight characters. If you type more than eight keystrokes, the computer beeps, and you must reenter the password. use any combination of letters and numbers. The system distinguishes between numeric keys above the letter keys an those in the numeric keypad at the right of the keyboard. For instance, if you enter a keypad 8 when creating the password, you may not enter the 8 above the letter keys when using the password. The system does not distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters in a password. For instance, D is the same as d. If you press an invalid key, the computer beeps, and you must reenter the password. If you make a mistake, use to erase the characters up to the mistake, then retype the correct characters. You cannot leave the Enter the Password field without establishing a password. If you begin to create a password and decide you do not want to use it, finish creating it and then cancel it. See the next section, "Canceling a Password." 5. When you finish typing, press . The cursor moves to the Verify field. Reenter the password and press . If the passwords match exactly, the password is enabled. If not, the computer beeps; press again and repeat the process. The administrator can prevent end users from changing their password by setting the Change User Password field to Admin Only. To allow end users to change their password, the administrator can set this field to User and Admin. To create a user password, use System Setup: 1. From the Main Menu, select User Security. 2. The User Security menu appears; move the cursor to the User Password field. 3. Use the left or right arrow key to select a security option: Boot to enable the password at boot, or Server to enable server mode. Then press . 4. The cursor moves to the Enter the Password field. Type the password you want to use. If the system administrator has set a minimum password length for the User password, the password you enter must be at least that long. No characters appear on screen as you type, so that other people cannot see the password. The same password rules apply to user password as to admin password; see the previous section for the rules to follow when creating a password. 5. When you finish typing, press . the cursor moves to the Verify field. Reenter the password and press . If the passwords match exactly, the Password is enabled. If not, the computer beeps: Press again and repeat the process. To change the content of a password, cancel the existing password and then create a new one. See the next section. "Canceling a Password." To change between the boot and server types of password: 1. From the Main menu, select User Security. 2. The User Security menu appears; move the cursor to the User Password field. 3. Use the left or right arrow key to change the security option. Then press . You do not need to set a different password when you change the password type. Canceling a Password To cancel a password, use System Setup or turn off the password switch on the system board. To use System Setup: 1. From the Main menu, select either Admin Security or User Security. 2. Move the cursor to the Admin Password or User Password field. 3. Use the left or right arrow key to select Disable for the admin password, or None for the user password. then press . The password is canceled. Using a Password as the Computer Starts If you selected Boot when you created a user password, the following prompt appears when you turn on the power switch or press the reset button: Please type the user password: Type the user password, then press . Or press without typing the user password, and the prompt for the admin password appears. Again, no characters appear on the screen as you type. If you do not enter the password correctly, the following message appears: -- Invalid Password -- In this case, retype the password. If you do not enter the password correctly after four attempts, you must restart the system before trying again. Locking the Keyboard If you selected Boot when you created a user password, you can set the keyboard so that no one can use it, even though the computer is running. To do so, press . The Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock lights flash. Only the flashing lights indicate that the keyboard is disabled; no screen message prompts you to enter the password. To reenable the keyboard, press to clear any keystrokes typed on the locked keyboard. Then type the password, and press . The Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock lights stop flashing, and the keyboard works. If you do not enter the user password correctly, the keyboard remains disabled. There is no limit to the number of times you can attempt to enter the user password. Using a Password in Server Mode If you selected Server when you created a user password, the computer completes the startup procedures and locks the keyboard each time you turn on the power switch or press the reset button.
