     System Setup, a program that is built into your computer, enables
     you to configure the system.  You can use the program to set the
     date and time, to create passwords, and to establish how your system
     uses features such as drives, ports, and videos.

     If you need to run System Setup because the computer detects an
     incorrect setting, it displays the following message:

         Press <F1> to continue, or <Ctrl+Alt+Esc> to run System Setup.

     If System Setup does not need to be run, the following message
     appears:

         To run System Setup, press <Ctrl+Alt+Esc> now.

     In either case, press <Ctrl+Alt+Esc>.  System Setup starts.

When you start System Setup, the Main Menu appears.

The System Setup screen is divided into two parts.

The left part of the screen displays the menus and fields you use to
run the program.  Generally, you select a secondary menu, which presents
a list of fields.  You then move the cursor to a field and select a
value for it.  (The date and time fields, however, are available directly
from the Main menu.)

The right part of the screen tells you how to use the secondary menus 
and fields you select.  This information changes automatically as you 
make new selections.

Use the following keys in the System Setup program.

     *  <Down arrow> or <Tab> moves the cursor forward to a secondary
         menu or a field.

     *  <Up arrow> or <Shift-Tab> moves the cursor backward to a 
        secondary menu or field.

     *  <Left arrow> and <Right arrow> move the cursor between options
        in a field.

The following descriptions of the System Setup fields are organized by
the secondary menus under which the fields appear.

   Main Menu

     Date and Time:  Set the date and time.  to set the date, use
                     two-digit numbers to indicate the month, day,
                     and year.  To set the time, use two-digit 
                     numbers to represent hour, minute, and second.
                     Use a 24-hour clock.

   Floppy and Boot

      Floppy-Disk Adapter:  Determines whether the system uses the
                            floppy controller on the system board.
                            Do not change this field from Auto unless
                            you are using an add-in floppy controller
                            that is not functioning correctly.

     Floppy Disk A and Floppy Disk B:  Identify the types of floppy
                                       disk for drives A and B.  The five
                                       options are None, 360 KB (5.25-
                                       inch), 1.2 MB (5.25-inch), 720 KB
                                       (3.5-inch), or 1.44 MB (3.5-inch).

     Keyboard Error:  Determines whether you computer can start without
                      a keyboard attached.  This is useful in a network
                      environment.  Selecting Ignore enables the computer
                      to start without a keyboard.  Selecting Report as
                      Error prevents it from starting without a keyboard.

     Num Lock:  Determines whether the numeric lock is on or off when
                you turn on your system.  This field affects the numeric
                keys on the right end of your keyboard.  If you select
                On at Boot, starting the system sets these keys so that
                you can use them to enter numbers.  If you select Off at
                Boot, starting the system sets these keys for use as
                cursor controls.  While your computer is on, you can use
                the <Num Lock> key to enable or disable the numeric lock.

     Boot Device:  Determines the order in which the system searches
                   for the boot drive -- the drive containing the disk
                   on which your operating system is installed.  To boot
                   (or start), the system must read information from
                   that disk.

                   If you select Try Hard Drive First, the system attempts
                   to start from drive C first, then A if it cannot start
                   from C (or C alone if you also activate a server
                   password).  It tries A before C if you select Try
                   Floppy First.

     POST Testing:  Determines whether the system invokes a normal
                    or an in-depth POST during start-up.  Selecting
                    Normal invokes diagnostic tests that identify any
                    failed field-replaceable units in the computer.
                    Selecting In-Depth invokes a more involved series
                    of tests.

   Power Conservation

     Hard-Disk Timeout:  Sets the number of minutes of system
                         inactivity, from 1 to 16, after which the hard
                         disk enters the power-conservation mode.  In
                         the power-conservation mode, the hard disk
                         consumes only a small amount of electricity
                         until the next time the system needs to read the
                         hard disk.

                         Set this field to 0 minutes to prevent the hard
                         disk from entering power-conservation mode.
                         This is the default setting.

     Note:  Some hard drives might not recognize when the power-
            conservation mode  is enabled.

     System Timeout:  Sets the number of minutes of system inactivity,
                      from 1 to 240, after which the system enters power-
                      conservation mode.  In power-conservation mode,
                      the system consumes only a small amount of
                       electricity, until the next time the system is
                       active.

                       Set this field to - minutes to prevent the system
                       from entering power-conservation mode.  This is
                       the default setting.

   Hard Drives

     Hard-Disk Adapter:  Determines whether the computer uses the
                         IDE adapter interface located on the system
                         board.  Set this field to Add-in only if you
                         are using a drive with a separate controller
                         board.

     First Hard-Disk Type
     and Second Hard-Disk Type:  Designates the types of your hard-disk
                                 drives.  If you computer came with a
                                 hard drive, its drive type was set at
                                 the factor; do not change it.  If you
                                 install a hard drive, move to the
                                 appropriate hard-disk type field and
                                 select Auto.  After you exit System
                                 Setup, the system attempts to identify
                                 the drive type.

          If, after you leave System Setup, you cannot access the drive,
          the system could not identify the hard-drive type automatically.
          In that case, restart System Setup and select User-defined.
          Enter drive statistics as prompted; refer to the drive's
          documentation for specific drive information.

   Video and Memory

     Primary Video:  Displays the setting of the display adapter
                     switch (switch 5) on the system board.  If the
                     setting is not correct (for example, you intend to
                     use integrated VGA, but the Primary Video field
                     reads Mono), reset switch 5 (see page 29).  This
                     field is for reference only.

     Video Adapter:  Identifies your primary display adapter type.
                     Valid types are:  EGA/VGA, for EGA, VGA, or
                     integrated VGA; COLOR 80, for CGA; MONO, for
                      monochrome.

     640x480 Mode:  Determines the integrated VGA output frequency
                    for extended modes.  Options are 60 Hz Non-Interlaced
                    and 72 Hz Non-Interlaced.  Refer to your monitor
                    documentation for more information.  Changes to the
                    VGA output frequency take effect the next time you
                    reset the system.

     800x600 Mode:  Determines the integrated VGA output frequency
                    for extended modes.  Options are 56 Hz Non-
                    Interlaced, 60 Hz Non-Interlaced, and 72 Hz Non-
                    Interlaced.  Refer to your monitor documentation for
                    more information.  Changes to the VGA output frequency
                    take effect the next time you reset the system.

    1024x768 Mode:  Determines the integrated VGA output frequency
                    for extended modes.  Options are 60 Hz Non-
                    Interlaced, 70 Hz Non-Interlaced, 72 Hz Non-
                    Interlaced, and 87 Hz Interlaced.  Refer to your
                    monitor documentation for more information.  Changes
                    to the VGA output frequency take effect the next time
                    you reset the system.

     Total Memory Size:  Displays the total amount of RAM installed
                         in the computer.  This field is for reference
                         only.  External Cache Size:  Displays the amount
                         of external Cache installed.  This field is for
                         reference only.

   Ports

     Parallel Port:  Establishes the I/O address of the parallel port.
                     Usually, select Auto.  If this setting conflicts
                     with that of another port in the system, select
                     another I/O address or disable the port.  To change
                     the IRQ of the parallel port, you must set a jumper
                     on the system board.  See page 33 to set the IRQ.

     Parallel Port Type:  Determines the parallel port mode.  Select
                          Standard to set the parallel port to one-
                          directional, output-only mode.  Select Enhanced
                          to set the parallel port to bidirectional,
                          input/output mode.

     Serial Ports:  Establishes the I/O addresses for the serial
                    ports.  Usually, select Auto.  If this setting
                    conflicts with that of another port in the system,
                    select another I/O address or disable the port.

   User Security

     User Password:  Enables you to set or change a user password.
                     When in force, this password restricts access to
                     the computer to use the system, a user must type
                     the password when the computer is restarted or
                     operates in server mode, or after a specified
                     amount of system inactivity (if Walk 'n' Lock
                     Duration is enabled).  For detailed information 
                     about passwords, see page 20.

                     Also, see the next section, "Admin Security."

     Video Blanking:  Select Blank In Security Mode to blank out
                      the screen when you use the Walk-and-lock or
                      keyboard locking security features.  Select
                      Disable, and the screen does not blank out.

     Walk 'n' Lock Duration:  After entering a User Password, set
                              the period of computer inactivity, in
                              one-minute increments from 1 to 30 minutes,
                              after which the system locks and requires a
                              password.  When Walk-and-lock security has
                              locked the system, the green LEDs on the
                              keyboard blink on and off; the system is
                              waiting for you to enter the password.
                              Moving the mouse attached to the built-in
                              mouse port, or pressing the keys on the
                              keyboard, keeps the system from locking.
                              Enter 0 to disable Walk-and-lock security.

   Admin Security

     Admin Password:  Enables you to set or change an administrator
                      password.  When this password is in force, it
                      controls access to the System Setup program.
                      A system administrator can configure the system
                      so that users who know only the User password
                      have full, limited, or no ability to change the
                      computer configuration.  The system administrator
                      can also set the minimum length of the User
                      password.  Set an administrator password if you
                      are responsible for configuring the computer for
                      other users.  Set a user password if you want to
                      restrict access to the computer.  For detailed
                      information about passwords.

     Setup Privilege:  Select User and Admin to give user with either
                       password the ability to change settings in the
                       System Setup program.  Select Admin Only to give
                       only the user with the administrator password the
                       right to change settings in the System Setup.

     BIOS Update Privilege:  Select User and Admin to give a user with
                             either password the ability to update the
                             BIOS.  Select Admin Only to give only the
                             user with the administrator password the
                             right to update the BIOS.  For more
                             information about updating the BIOS.

     Change User Password:  Enables the system administrator to
                            define whether users can change their
                            password.  Set this field to User and Admin
                            to allow both users and the system
                            administrator to change the user password.
                            Set this field to Admin Only to prevent the
                            user from changing their password.

     Minimum Password Size:  Enables the system administrator to set
                             the minimum number of characters allowed
                             for the user password.  Enter 1, 2, 3, 4,
                             5, 6, 7, or 8.  This restriction does not
                             affect the current user password, if any.
                             It applies only to new user passwords.
                             Enter 0 if no user password is required.

     Note:  The user password must be established before you can
            change the minimum password size.

     Read-Only ISA Conf:  Prevents changes to System Setup settings.
                          (These settings relate to the Industry Standard
                          Architecture, or ISA, and reside in memory
                          called CMOS.)  Set this field to Read-Only
                          to prevent changes or Read/Write to allow
                          changes.  Note that if you choose Read-Only,
                          you will able to change this field in the
                          future; you do not permanently lose the ability
                          to change System Setup settings.

     Read-Only Floppy Drives:  Usually, select Read/Write so that you
                               computer can record information on floppy
                               disks.  Select Read-Only to prevent changes
                               to floppy disks.

     Read-Only I/O Port:  Select Read/Write to allow changes to your
                          parallel port, serial port, and hard-drive
                          configurations.  Select Read-Only to lock the
                          current configurations.

   System Information

     The Following fields are for reference only.

        BIOS:  Displays the revision number of the BIOS in the computer.

        BIOS Loader:  Displays the revision number of the BIOS Loader.

        Processor Type:  Displays the type of microprocessor installed.

        Processor Speed:  Displays the fastest speed of microprocessor
                          installed.

        System Serial Number:  Displays the serial number assigned to
                               the computer.

        Asset Tag:  Displays the asset tag assigned to the computer.
                    The asset tag is intended for use by system
                    administrators who need to identify systems with
                    a unique tag.  A utility program is available from
                    Radio Shack customer services that sets the Asset Tag.
                    This field cannot be changed using System Setup.

   Update BIOS

        Enables you to initiate an update of your system BIOS.  For
        detailed procedures, see "Updating the System BIOS."
