3900/3950HD/3950C (250-3580/86/87) Video Faxback Doc. # 2796 CONTROLLING THE VIDEO DISPLAY USING SPECIAL KEY COMBINATIONS Special key combinations allow you to control the video screen display. These key combinations activate software features built into the computer. The keys used are the [Fn] key in conjunction with either the [F8], [F9], or [F10] function keys. If you connect an external keyboard that does not have a [Fn] key, you must use the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys by pressing them at the same time instead of the [Fn] key. Press them and the corresponding function key for the specific feature you want to activate. To control the video display, the three key combinations and their functions are as follows: a) Press [Fn+F8] keys to switch back and forth between the notebook's LCD screen and an external monitor or dual scan (LCD and CRT used simultaneously). When you turn off the computer, the system will default to the LCD screen the next time you turn the computer on, even if an external monitor is connected. b) Press [Fn+F9] to reverse the background and foreground screen. If a mono-LCD is attached, the function of this hot key is to switch the display screen between a white character on the black background screen or a black character on the white background screen. If color LCD is attached, this hot key does not work (the screen does not change). c) Press [Fn+F10] to stretch the screen display vertically. In some display modes, the image displayed on the screen does not use the entire screen and some blank space is left at both the screen top and bottom. Using this key combination will stretch the display vertically so the entry screen is filled. The keyboard option in setup has two settings, INSTALLED and NOT INSTALLED. Both settings appear to have no effect on the keyboard detection on power up. In other words no matter what the setting, if an external keyboard is detected on power up, the external functions and the system keyboard will not. 1. If setup is set for Video Display External CRT, the LCD does not have an active display. If the CRT is removed the LCD still will not have an active display. The result is no video on the LCD. If the 3900 boots into windows the [Fn] [F8] keys (to alternate video display) has no effect. Solution: After the HDD/FDD activity light goes out, press [ALT] [F4], wait 3 seconds, press enter, wait 3 seconds, press the [Fn] [F8] keys. At this point the LCD is active, the user can change setup, or continue working with out making changes to setup. Note: A. If the unit is powered down with out changes to setup, the steps above will need to be repeated. B. If the unit does not boot into windows, press [Fn] [F8] after the HDD/FDD light goes out. C. If using the external keyboard, use the [CTRL] [ALT] key sequence to replace the [Fn] key. D. If there is a password being used on the 3900, wait approximately 10 seconds after powering up the unit, type in the password, press , and continue with the above steps. (smc-02/18/94)
