4100 MT (250-5160) Updating the System BIOS Faxback Doc. # 2823 Your computer uses flash BIOS, which enables you to update the BIOS easily from a floppy disk. If the manufacturer releases a BIOS update for your computer, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer to obtain a copy of the BIOS update disk. Note: Each BIOS update disk is designed to work only on the product for which it was released. That way, you cannot accidentally update the BIOS on your system with a BIOS designed for some other computer. This section contains the following information: A brief description of the update process. Procedures for performing a BIOS update. Troubleshooting guidelines for the BIOS update process. About the Update Process Basically, the BIOS update process consists of three phases: Initiating the update by selecting Update BIOS from the Main menu of System Setup. Updating the BIOS from a floppy disk. Verifying your system configuration and rebooting your system to use the new BIOS. Since the BIOS update can affect many of your system components (including the keyboard and monitor), your computer runs in a minimal- configuration mode during the update. This means that no messages are displayed on the monitor to indicate update status, and not keyboard input is accepted until the update is complete and you reboot the system. The BIOS update takes approximately 15 seconds to complete. If the update process is halted for any reason (for example, if the system is accidently turned off), your system will not boot until the update is completed. Once the BIOS update is complete, you need to verify your system configuration by running the System Setup program. After you verify and save your system configuration, reboot your system to use the new BIOS. Performing the BIOS Update To perform the BIOS update, do the following: 1. Start System Setup. 2. If the Boot Device field is set to Try Hard Drive First, set it to Try Floppy First. 3. On the System Setup Main menu, move the cursor to Update BIOS and press . 4. The following options appear: If you have made changes in the System Setup that you want to save, such as changing the Boot Device field to Try Floppy First, select the first option. If you select the second option, changes made to System Setup during this work session are lost when you exit the program. 5. The following messages appear: To start the update process, insert the BIOS Update disk in drive A and press . To cancel the update, press . The system will reboot. Place the BIOS Update disk in drive A and press . A screen appears that briefly describes the update process. Read the instructions carefully. 6. Press the reset button to proceed with the update. The BIOS update takes approximately 15 seconds, during which the screen remains blank. If the update is completed successfully, the computer beeps twice. Proceed to step 7. If the computer beeps more than twice, refer to the next section, "Troubleshooting the BIOS Update," for more information. 7. Remove the Update disk from drive A, and press the reset button. Hold down any key to access System Setup. Verify your configuration. 8. Once you have verified your configuration and saved any changes, reboot your system to use the new BIOS. Troubleshooting the BIOS Update This section tells you what to do if you have problems updating your system BIOS. Since no status messages are displayed on your monitor during the BIOS update, you must rely on beep codes to determine the status of the update. Table 6 lists the beep codes that relate to the BIOS update. Where applicable, the table describes any corrective action you can take. If any problem persists after you take corrective action, contact your local Radio Shack store or participating dealer for assistance. Beeps Long Short Meaning and Action Required 2 0 Flash updated successfully; no action required. 2 2 CMOS checksum failure. This may be caused by a problem with your System Setup configuration or by a problem with the CMOS battery. Run System Setup to try to resolve the problem. Try the update again. If the problem continues, you may need a new CMOS battery. Contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 3 Floppy-disk controller error. The floppy disk is absent or inserted incorrectly, or the dive is malfunctioning. Reinsert the floppy disk, and try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio shack store or participating dealer. 2 4 The update disk may be the BIOS update disk for some other machine. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact you Radio Shack store or participating dealer to obtain the proper BIOS update disk. 2 5 RAM image header failure. The copyright notice embedded in the file header is incorrect and may indicate that the disk has been tampered with. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 7 Checksum failure for RAM image of the BIOS update data. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 8 Checksum failure for the ROM BIOS in the programmable section of the flash BIOS. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 9 Generic flash program failure. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 10 Flash device error. The data failed to verify during program mode. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 11 Flash device error. The chip failed to erase properly. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 12 Keyboard initialization error. The keyboard controller failed to reply to the initialization sequence. Try the update again. 2 13 Manufacturing jumper error. The keyboard controller timed out while inspecting the manufacturing jumper. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. 2 14 Checksum failure during data transmission. The data transferred to RAM failed the file check. Check the floppy disk to see if it is bad. Check the parallel port connection. Try the update again. If the error recurs, contact you Radio Shack store or participating dealer. (ALL/all-06/16/94)
