Windows 3.1 Upgrade Bulletin Faxback Doc. # 2836 To install Windows 3.1 on your MPC, you must first install Windows 3.0 with MultiMedia Extensions. Follow the installation instructions that came with Windows 3.0. Then, follow the procedure below to upgrade to Windows 3.1. UPGRADE PROCEDURE To upgrade your MPC from the currently installed Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1, perform the following steps: NOTE: You cannot use the Windows 3.1 compact disc (CD) to add multimedia features to an installed version of Windows 3.1. 1. If you are running a disk caching program, such as SMARTDRV.SYS, disable the program. Then restart your computer. For example, if you are using SMARTDRV, disable caching by inserting REM before the SMARTDRV in the SMARTDRV command line of your CONFIG.SYS file. After completing the software setup, remove the REM command to enable disk caching. Restart your computer. 2. Insert the Windows 3.1 CD into the CD ROM drive, type d: and press ENTER to access the CD. 3. Type CD\MWIN and press ENTER to access the Windows subdirectory. 4. To run the setup program, type SETUP and press ENTER. 5. Select CUSTOM for type of installation. Follow the instructions on the screen. NOTE: In order to run the demo programs, you must select the appropriate 640x480x256 color video mode for your video adapter. 6. After the installation is complete, exit the program and return to DOS. 7. Type c: and press ENTER. 8. Using the MS-DOS editor, delete the following line from your SYSTEM.INI file in the MWINDOWS directory. DEVICE=VDMADR.386 Then, restart your computer. Refer to your MS-DOS documentation for information about the editor and the SYSTEM,INI file. If you have just installed Windows 3.0 and have not run the multimedia tutorials, during the audio test, the MIDI sequencer displays this message: This File May Not Play Correctly With The Default Midi Setup. To remove this message from your display, perform the following steps: 1. Press ALT + 4 to place the cursor in the check box. 2. Press the space bar. Then, tab to the OK button and press ENTER. PROGRAM MANAGER SHELL If you are using the Windows Program Manager as the default shell, at the MS-DOS prompt, type WIN and press ENTER to run Windows. Program Manager is displayed. TANDY SHELL If you are using the Tandy shell as the default shell, remove the Windows 3.1 CD from the CD ROM drive and insert the Windows 3.0 CD into the drive. At the MS-DOS prompt, type WIN and press ENTER to run Windows. In Windows, select the Program Manager icon and make Program Manager the default shell. Then, exit Windows. At the DOS prompt, type WIN and press ENTER to run Windows. Program Manager is displayed. Then, exchange the Windows 3.0 CD in your CD ROM drive for the Windows 3.1 CD. SETUPMX To run SETUPMX.EXE to install the Multimedia Extras for Windows, perform the following steps: 1. From Windows Program Manager, select File Run. 2. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\MWINDOWS\SYSTEM\SETUPMX.EXE Press ENTER. 3. Follow the instructions. 4. When you've completed the installation, exit Windows. If you need to run SETUPMX.EXE again, you must first remove all three sound drivers. Refer to your Windows documentation for information about removing drivers. COMPLETING THE UPGRADE If you disabled your disk caching program, enable it and restart your computer. If you wish to use the Tandy shell as the default shell, select the Reset Demo icon or run TDEMOCFG.EXE the next time you run Windows. Windows 3.1 does not include or support the following: -Hyperguide -Music Box -Alarm Clock If these programs were previously installed on your hard drive, the Windows upgrade procedure has removed them.
