120 MB Smartdrive (250-5141/42) HD Initialization Faxback Doc. # 2937 Before you can use the hard drive, you must initialize it by creating one or more partitions. Then, you must format the drive to prepare it to store and access the operating system and other files. NOTE: Low-level formatting of the drive is not recommended for normal operation. The drive was low-level formatted at the factory. Follow these steps to initialize the SmartDrive if you are using MS-DOS: 1. After you start up the system from an MS-DOS system diskette, use the fdisk command to partition the hard drive. (If you are using another operating system, refer to your operating system documentation for information about formatting hard disks.) If you use MS-DOS 3.3 (or an earlier version) and your hard disk has a capacity greater than 32 megabytes, you must include at least two partitions (usually C and D) to store data above the 32MB boundary. 2. Use the format command to format each partition. Format the active partition with the /s switch (format c:/s) to copy the MS-DOS system files to the partition and make it bootable. 3. Use the copy command to copy the remaining files from: * Utilities diskette(s) * Operating system diskette(s) 4. Remove the diskette from Drive A, and reset the computer to start up from the hard drive. Refer to your MS-DOS documentation for specific information about the fdisk, format, and copy commands.
