40 Meg Hard Disk Card (250-4059B) Installation Faxback Doc. # 3046 To avoid electrical shock, make sure that all power to your computer is off. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical source. Follow these steps to prepare your computer for installation: 1. Before you remove any cables, note their location. Then when you reinstall the cables, you'll know where to place them. As a safety precaution, remove the power cord and all interface cables from the main unit. 2. On the front of the main unit, remove the two cover screws. Place the screws in a safe location as you will need them to replace the cover. 3. Carefully slide the cover forward staying clear of any cables, and lift it off the main unit. Set the cover in a safe place. INSERTING THE HARD DISK CARD IN THE TANDY 1000'S The Tandy 1000 and 1000A have three expansion slots in the main unit and the Tandy 1000SX, TX, SL, TL, AND TL/2 have five expansion slots. Insert the Hard Disk Card into the expansion slot which is farthest to the right when facing the front of the computer, following the steps below. 1. The recording surfaces of the hard disk media are the product of a manufacturing process and are, therefore, not 100% perfect. Because of this, a map is made of those areas that may not be usable and will be restricted from use. This "media map" can be found on the top of the drive. Some drives will have no restricted areas, therefore the "media map" will have no entries. Before installing the hard drive into your computer, take time to record the information from the "media map" in the table provided here. Only the head and cylinder information is required. Remove the screw from the metal slot cover (Fig. 1-2). Lift slot cover out of the computer frame and store it for possible future use. Save the screw because you need it to secure the Hard Disk Card to the back panel. 3. Holding the Hard Disk Card by the metal supporting frame, align the card within the selected space so that the bracket end extends to the rear panel. 4. Carefully lower the card into the slot and slide the connector on the bottom of the card into the receiving connector on the motherboard. Gently press down on the controller end of the card while supporting the drive with your other hand. Make sure the card is securely in place. The hook-shaped support bracket (on the end of the drive) must hook down over the vertical wall at the front of the computer chassis. NOTE: On the Tandy SL and TL series, this hook-shaped bracket should be placed with the "T" shaped bracket on your computer, see instructions with your computer. 5. Insert the bracket screw you previously put aside through the hole in the Hard Disk Card Bracket and secure the card to the rear panel. REPLACING THE COVER Once you have your Hard Disk Card installed, the last step to complete the hardware installation is to replace the cover. Make sure the cables are out of the way and will not get caught between the cover and the boards. Also, check that the cables do not obstruct the air flow path from the fan or vents. TO REINSTALL THE COVER: 1. Replace the cover by placing the cover's back opening over the main unit. Carefully slide it on staying clear of any cables. 2. Reinstall the cover mounting screws. 3. Reattach all interface cables and power cords to the back panel of the system. If you are not sure of the placement, refer to the notes you made before you removed the cables. The hardware installation is now complete. You can now proceed to Chapter 3 for instructions on initializing the Hard Disk Card. INSTALLING YOUR HARD DISK CARD IN THE TANDY 3000 This chapter explains how to install your Hard Disk Card in the Tandy 3000. To install the Hard Disk Card, you must remove the cover on your computer. Then configure, assemble, and insert the Hard Disk Card into your computer. and replace the cover. NOTE: If you are installing the Hard Disk Card in a Tandy 3000 equipped with BIOS version 01.00.00 (as displayed on power-up), please obtain a BIOS ROM upgrade kit from your local Radio Shack Computer Center prior to installation. CAUTION: Do not exceed the specified power consumption for the system you are using. Adding a product that exceeds the limit may damage the power supply. Refer to Appendix B for power requirements for the Hard Disk Card. NOTE: The Hard Disk Card will not work in the Tandy 3000HD. GETTING STARTED To install your Hard Disk Card, you need a small Phillips screwdriver. Also, to avoid electrical shock. make sure that all power to your computer is off. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical source. Follow these steps to prepare your computer for installation: 1. Before you remove any cables, note their location. Then when you reinstall the cables, you'll know where to place them. Now remove the power cord and all interface cables from the main unit. 2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four cover screws at the back of the computer. Place the screws in a safe location as you will need them to replace the cover. 3. Rotate the computer frame so that the fan faces you. Carefully slide that cover forward staying clear of any cables. When the cover catches, tilt it slightly and lift it off the main unit. Set the cover in a safe place. ASSEMBLING THE HARD DISK CARD FOR THE TANDY 3000 To use the Hard Disk Card on the Tandy 3000, you must extend the Hard Disk Card to fit in the expansion slot. This requires that you disassemble the drive portion of the Hard Disk Card, turn the Winchester disk over and slide it back, and then remount the disk on the metal frame. Turning the disk over does not affect its operation in any way and is quite a simple procedure. Follow these steps to prepare your Hard Disk Card for installation in the Tandy 3000: 1. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two mounting screws from the support bracket on the back of the Hard Disk Card. You do not need this support bracket for this of the Hard Disk Card, but save the mounting screws for later use. 2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four disk mounting screws on the metal supporting frame. Place the screws in a safe location because you need them to remount the disk. 3. Disconnect the flat cable from J2B on the controller board. Note that the red stripe on each cable lines up with pin 1 on the controller board. 4. Note the position of the four-pin power connector. You need not disconnect this connector, but be careful of this connector when repositioning the disk and flat cable. 5. Carefully pull the disk out of the frame. Leave the power connector in place. Turn the disk over so that the hard disk electronics board is visible. 6. Slide the disk back so that the new mounting holes on the metal frame match the disk. Mount the drive in the new location. Install the mounting screws by turning them clockwise to tighten. Be sure the screws are securely in place, but do not over tighten them. If you should lose any of these screws, be sure to use other screws of the same length. DO NOT USE LONGER SCREWS!!! 7. Re-attach the cable from the disk drive to J2A on the controller board. Remember that the red stripe lines up with pin 1. 8. Now install the special extender bracket supplied for the Tandy 3000. Attach this bracket to the rear of the Hard Disk Card. Use the screws supplied with the extender bracket. 9. Check to be sure you have correctly reassembled the Hard Disk Card. Now you can continue with the steps to install the Hard Disk Card in the Tandy 3000. INSERTING THE HARD DISK CARD IN THE TANDY 3000 The Tandy 3000 (Floppy Only) has ten slots, but you can only install the Hard Disk Card in slots 1 or 3. NOTE: The Hard Disk Card will not work in the Tandy 3000HD. To insert the Hard Disk Card into your computer's expansion slot, follow these steps: 1. Remove the screw from the metal expansion slot cover with a Phillips screwdriver (Refer to Figure 1-2, Chapter 1). Lift the slot cover out of the computer frame and store it for possible future use. Save the screw because you need it to secure the Hard Disk Card to the back panel. 3. Holding the Hard Disk Card by the metal supporting frame, align the card within the selected space so that the bracket end extends to the rear panel and the opposite end (with the special extender bracket) is over the card guide slot. 4. Carefully lower the card into the slot and slide the connector on the bottom of the card into the receiving connector on the motherboard. Gently press down on the controller end of the Hard Disk Card while supporting the drive with your other hand. Make sure the Hard Disk Card is securely in place. 5. Insert the bracket screw you previously put aside through the hole in the bracket and secure the Hard Disk Card to the rear panel. REPLACING THE COVER Once you have your Hard Disk Card installed, the last step to complete the hardware installation is to replace the cover. Make sure the cables are out of the way and not caught between the cover and the boards. Also, check that the cables do not obstruct the air flow path from the fan or vents. To reinstall the cover: 1. Replace the cover by tilting the cover's back opening over the main unit. Once it catches, lower the cover to a flat position and carefully slide it on staying clear of any cables. 2. Reinstall the cover mounting screws. 3. Reattach all interface cables and power cords to the back panel of the system. If you are not sure of the placement, refer to the notes you made before you removed the cables. 4. For the Tandy 3000 (Floppy Only), you need to run the Setup program. Setup is located on the system utilities diskette that comes with your computer. The instructions for the Setup program are in the Tandy 3000 Installation and Operation Manual. When you come to the hardware configuration screen, there are prompts for Fixed Disk Drive C and Fixed Disk Drive D. For the Tandy 3000 (Floppy Only), leave both drive C and Drive D as NOT INSTALLED. To complete the Setup program, do not continue with the instructions in the Tandy 3000 (Floppy Only) manual for formatting your hard disk. Instead, continue with the instruction for initializing the Hard Disk Card in Chapter 3 of this manual. The hardware installation is now complete. You can now proceed to Chapter 3 for instructions on initializing the Hard Disk Card. RELOCATING THE HARD DISK CARD To protect your hard disk when you are going to move your computer, it is necessary to park the disk heads over the shipping (parking) zone. This protects your data from accidental loss. To park the disk heads, all you have to do is type: WDPARK at the system prompt (either C or D) from your root directory. When the disk head parking routine is being performed, you see this message: HEAD PARKING UTILITY VERSION X.X COPYRIGHT 1988 WESTERN DIGITAL CORPORATION After the head parking routine is completed, your screen displays: RETRACTING HEADS ON FIXED DISK 1...HEADS PARKED. YOU MAY NOW POWER THE SYSTEM DOWN AND RELOCATE. You can now safely move your Hard Disk Card. Be sure to turn your system off first. After you relocate the system, all you have to do is power up again. The disk heads automatically return to their normal operating position. WARNING: DO NOT SHIP THE HARD DISK CARD INSTALLED INSIDE THE COMPUTER!!! INITIALIZING THE HARD DISK CARD (25-4059B) Your Hard Disk Card includes software utilities that make initialization and file management easy to perform. There is also a software utility, WDPARK, that protects your files from accidental loss should you need to move your computer. This chapter explains how to use the Auto Install program to initialize your Hard Disk Card. Chapter 4 explains how to prepare your Hard Disk Card for moving. The Auto Install Program: * Initializes and formats the hard disk. * Copies the necessary DOS files that enable you to boot the system from the Hard Disk Card as drive C. * Creates a bootable backup diskette of the Hard Disk Card utilities for future use. Auto Install requires 192K minimum system memory and is based on most MS-DOS operating systems. If your system has less than 192K, or if you receive and error message when you start Auto Install, use the alternate installation procedure described later in this section. USING AUTO INSTALL Before you begin using the Auto Install program, you need a DOS system diskette (3.20 or later)* and a blank diskette. In the following steps, type the characters shown in boldface and press the key after each instruction you type on the screen. These steps take you through the automatic install procedure. When you are through, your software will be installed. 1. Turn the computer power switch ON and boot the system. 2. When the system prompt appears, if your Hard Disk Card is the first hard disk, type: C:INSTALL OR for model 1000TL and 1000TL/2 that have booted into DeskMate, do the following: 1. From DeskMate Desktop (Main Screen), press the function key. 2. From the pulldown menu that appears, select the RUN option & press the key. 3. A dialogue box will appear. Type "C:\INSTALL" followed by pressing the key. When the automatic installation begins, the screen displays various messages asking you to perform certain tasks or answer questions. NOTE: DOS 3.3 and below can not have a volume larger that 32 megabytes. Your 40 Meg Hard Card must therefore be partitioned into two (or more) volumes. The Auto Install Program will provide you with two choices, first choice is 20 meg and 20 meg. The second choice is 30 meg and 10 meg. The first choice is more common. Also, note that your physical 40 Meg Hard Card will be partitioned into two logical drives, C and D. If you wish to partition your 40 Meg Hard Disk Card in a different manner than Auto Install provides, refer to the Alternate Installation Procedure in this chapter. The initial messages instruct you to insert the DOS system diskette into Drive A to copy some system utilities. Another message asks you to remove this diskette and insert a blank one. Once you insert the blank diskette and it starts formatting, the rest of the installation process usually takes under 40 minutes to complete. During this process, Auto Install transfers the operating system and supplied software to the blank diskette. After the diskette activity stops, the Auto Install program will list the restricted cylinders if any are present on the "media map". It will then display the message "Do you wish to restrict cylinders from use (Y/N)?". If the list displayed matches the "media map" copied from the drive, answer "N" followed by . If the list DOES NOT match the "media map", answer "Y" followed by . The program will the prompt for head and cylinder information copied from the "media map". Follow the directions displayed on your monitor to enter the data. When all of the "media map" information has been entered, enter "O" when prompted for cylinder number and press . The Auto Install will continue until you are asked to remove the backup diskette and re-boot the system. When you remove this diskette, label it Hard Disk Card Software Backup, place a write protect tab on it, and store it for future use. If you ever need to reinitialize the Hard Disk Card, use the backup diskette you just created to start your system. The reinstallation process starts automatically, but you receive messages before any data is altered on your Hard Disk Card. If you are reinitializing on a Tandy 1000TL or 1000TL/2 and you boot into DeskMate, you will need to follow the instructions in step 2, page 3-2 for these machines. However, where you are asked to type into the dialogue box, type the following: A:AUTOEXEC To make additional copies of the backup diskette, use the program for copying disks supplied with your DOS version. USING ALTERNATE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Copy sown the "media map" from the Hard Disk Card before installing the Hard Disk Card into the computer. (See Chapter 1-4 or Chapter 2-7) NOTE: If you are not familiar with using DOS utilities, you should refer to your DOS user manual, or use the Auto Install feature of your Hard Disk Card. To use the alternate installation procedure, follow these steps: 1. Start the system with your version of DOS. When prompted by the operating system, type: FORMAT A:/S 2. When the system prompts you, place a blank diskette (which will become the backup copy) in the A drive. 3. When you finish formatting your diskette and you receive the system prompt, type: MD A:\INSTALL.HD 4. When you receive the system prompt, type: C: Now type: COPY\*.* A:\ NOTE: If you can not access the C: drive, continue to step 1 below. No files will be copied. After all the files are copied to the floppy diskette, preparation of the Hard Disk Card is done by first low level formatting the drive, then partitioning (FDISK) and finally performing a high level format. 1. At the C: prompt, type: A: 2. Insert you DOS diskette and type: DEBUG At the debug prompt (A hyphen), type: G=C800:5 NOTE: You may exit the low level format by pressing the CTRL & C key. The first question is "Current drive is C:; select new drive or return for current." Press . Answer the second question by pressing . Answer the third question, "Are you dynamically configuring the drive?", with a (Y). At the prompt, type: 782 4 782 782 11 7 Answer the question, "Are you virtually configuring the drive?", with a (Y). NOTE: You must virtually split the drive for DOS versions 3.2 or lower. You may answer "N" for DOS 3.3 or higher and allow DOS at FDISK to split the drive. You will now see the following question, "Key in cylinder number for virtual drive split as XXXX...where XXXX...= the number of cylinders for drive C: (1-4 digits." Now enter the number of cylinders for your first logical drive (C:). This can be a maximum of 782 cylinders for MS-DOS 3.3 and 630 for 3.2 or less (you may approximate the number of megabytes in each logical drive by multiplying 53248 by the number of cylinders you enter from 782 and assign the remainder to the next drive. EXAMPLE 1- If you wish to configure your drive with 25 megabytes on logical drive D, the calculation would be: 25,000,000 / 53248 = 469.5 Therefore, you would enter 470 for the number of cylinders. The system will automatically assign the balance (782 - 470 = 312) to logical drive D. EXAMPLE 2- If you wish to configure your drive with 10 megabytes on logical drive C and 30 megabytes on logical drive D, the calculation would be: 10,000,000 / 53248 = 187.8 Therefore, you would enter 188 for the number of cylinders. The system will automatically assign the balance (782 - 188 = 594) to logical drive D. At the prompt "Press "Y" to begin formatting Drive C with interleave 04", press "Y" to continue low level formatting the drive. After approximately 15 minutes, you will be prompted with "Do you want to format restricted cylinders - answer Y/N. If you have restricted cylinders copied from the drive "media map", answer "Y" and enter at this time; if not answer "N" and continue. 3. When the low level format operation is complete, restart your system with your DOS diskette. 4. You must now partition your drive. At the prompt, type: FDISK NOTE: Follow the instructions on the screen to properly partition the drive. DOS 3.2 requires you to partition drive 1 and drive 2 with the maximum size that you selected in step 2. DOS 3.3 partitions the drive as a primary and secondary partition (for further information on using FDISK, refer to your DOS manual). 5. After completing the partitioning, you must now high level format your drive. NOTE: You must format each logical drive separately, i.e., format drive C the drive D, etc. You must make the first partition on drive C active if you want to boot from you hard drive. At the prompt, type: FORMAT C:/S (If you wish to put the DOS system on drive C, allowing you to boot from your hard drive) After drive C is formatted type: FORMAT D: If you have partitioned your drive into more than two partition, you must format each logical drive, i.e., D:, E:, etc. You can now complete the installation of your Hard Disk Card by copying the WDPARK.EXE from the backup diskette as follows: NOTE: If you were unable to copy files from the Hard Disk in the beginning of this section, skip this step. 1. Insert the backup diskette into the A drive and then type A: 2. At the A prompt, type: COPY\WDPARK.EXE C:\ This program protects your data by parking the disk heads over the shipping (parking) zone. Refer to Chapter 4. 3. Now type C:. You are ready to use your Hard Disk Card. (dkh-08/06/93)
