40 MB Smartdrive (250-1046) Mounting Procedures Faxback Doc. # 3058 MOUNTING PROCEDURES for the 1000TL/2 or 1000TL/3: This drive should come with the following hardware for proper installation. The Smartdrive Interconnect cable Hardware Kit (screws, rubber fittings) User Installation Guide GETTING STARTED To avoid possible electrical shock, be sure that all power to the computer is off. Disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet or power strip. Follow these steps to prepare your computer for installation: 1. After noting their locations, remove the power cord and all peripheral cables from the main unit. 2. Remove the two cover screws located on the sides of the computer cabinet. (Refer to your computer owner's manual for instructions on removing the cover.) Place the screws in a safe location because you will need them to replace and secure the cover. 3. Carefully slide the cover forward staying clear of any cables, and lift the cover off the computer. Place the cover in a safe location. WHERE TO MOUNT THE DRIVE The following section explains where the 25-1046 can be mounted in these computers: 1000 TL/2 - You can install the SmartDrive in one of three locations in your or computer. If you have only one 3 1/2" diskette drive, you can 1000 TL/3 install the SmartDrive in the second location for a 3 1/2" disk- ette drive, to the left of the first diskette drive, see method number 1. If you have two 3 1/2" diskette drives, you can install the SmartDrive in the 5 1/4" expansion bay. Mounting the drive in the 5 1/4" position requires a special adapter bracket that you can obtain from your Tandy dealer (part # AXX-7004), see method number 2. If you have two 3 1/2" diskette drives and a 5 1/4" diskette drive, the SmartDrive can be mounted in a special internal bracket (part # MB-0109). This bracket is mounted below the LEFT 3.5 expansion bay, see method number 3. NOTE: The recording surfaces of the hard disk media are the product of a manufacturing process and are, therefore, not 100% perfect. Because of this, a map is made of those areas that may not be usable and will be restricted from use. This "media map" can be found on the top of the drive. Some drives will have no restricted areas, therefore the "media map" will have no entries. Before installing the hard drive into your computer take time to record the information from the "media map" in the table provided here. Only the head and cylinder information is required. This installation requires NO ADDITIONAL BRACKET. Facing the front, remove the two screws holding the 3.5 (upper left) floppy bracket. Then, slide the bracket back and lift it out of the computer chassis. Remove the SmartDrive from the anti-static bag, place the drive into the mounting bracket, and attach the SmartDrive to the bracket using the four screws from the hardware kit. One of the Interconnect cable's connectors has a keyed hole. Plug this connector into the SmartDrive, matching the SmartDrive's missing pin on J2 with the keyed hole on the connector. Place the SmartDrive into the computer, being sure that the two metal tabs on the bottom of the bracket are placed in the computer frame holes. Then, slide the bracket forward and replace the mounting screws. Connect the interconnect cable's other connector to J7 on the computer's main logic board. NOTE: The connector on the cable will only plug into J7 one way due to the polarizing tab (curved edge) on the connector. Locate the spare power cable (4 wire with white connector) and connect it to J1 on the SmartDrive. Inspect the installation, making sure all cables are properly installed and will not interfere with the replacement of the computer cover (keep cables between power supply and floppy drive bay away from top of unit). Proceed to "4> REPLACING THE COVER" METHOD 2> 5.25 FLOPPY DRIVE BAY INSTALL (unit has two 3.5 floppies) If you have two 3.5 floppies and you wish to install the drive in the 5.25 expansion bay, you need the AXX-7004 adapter. Remove the smartdrive from the anti-static bag. Remove the two drive mounting rails from the 5.25 expansion bay. Using the screws that come with the smartdrive (the hardware kit), mount the adapter brackets to the sides of the smartdrive. Next, mount the drive rails to the adapter with the screws that come attached to the rails. One of the interconnect cables has a keyed hole. Plug this connector into the smartdrive, matching the smartdrives missing pin on J2 with the keyed hole on the connector. Slide the smartdrive into the 5.25 bay, being careful not to put the inter- connect cable into a bind. Slide the unit back, but not all the way in. Connect the interconnect cable's other connector to J7 on the computers main logic board. Note: The connector will only plug into J7 one way due to the polarizing tab (curved edge) on the connector. Locate the spare power cable (4 wire with white connector) and connect it to J1 on the smartdrive. Finally, slide the hard drive all the way into the computer, until the tabs on the front of the slide rails "click" into position. Inspect the installation, making sure all cables are properly installed and will not interfere with the replacement of the computer cover (keep cables between power supply and floppy drive bay away from top of unit). Proceed to "4> REPLACING THE COVER" METHOD 3> SPECIAL LOCATION INSTALL (unit has one 5.25 and two 3.5 floppies): This install requires special adapter bracket MB-0109 and will install between left 3.5 floppy drive bay and the speaker (cut in chassis). One of the Interconnect cable's connectors has a keyed hole. Plug this connector into the SmartDrive, matching the SmartDrive's missing pin on J2 with the keyed hole on the connector. Connect the interconnect cable's other connector to J7 on the computer's main logic board. NOTE: The connector on the cable will only plug into J7 one way due to the polarizing tab (curved edge) on the connector. Locate the spare computer power cable (4 wire with white connector) and connect it to J1 on the SmartDrive. Inspect the installation, making sure all cables are properly installed and will not interfere with the replacement of the computer cover (keep cables between power supply and floppy drive bay away from top of unit). Proceed to "4> REPLACING THE COVER" 4> REPLACING THE COVER Once you have installed your SmartDrive, you need to replace the computer's cover. To replace the cover: 1. Place the cover's back opening over the computer and carefully slide the cover onto the computer, taking care to stay clear of all cables. 2. Reinstall the cover mounting screws. 3. Reattach all peripheral cables and the power cord to the back of the computer. The hardware installation is now complete. You can now proceed to "Initializing the SmartDrive" for instructions on initializing the SmartDrive. (jej-04/21/94)
