40 MB Smartdrive (250-1046) Alternate Initialization Faxback Doc. # 3061 Procedure FDISK and FORMAT Instructions for the 25-1046 The following instructions are to prepare the 25-1046 for use when AUTO-INSTALL is not present on the hard drive. Choose your situation and follow procedure: A) You hard drive has had all information (including partition information) deleted from hard drive, but has NOT been low-level formatted, then Go to PROCEDURE 3. B) Your hard drive has had the AUTO-INSTALL program deleted, but the small partition is still present on hard drive. The drive has NOT been low-level formatted. Go to PROCEDURE 1. C) If your drive has been low-level formatted, send the drive to a Tandy Service Center to be Re-Factorized. PROCEDURE 1: A> BOOT machine with DOS system disk in drive A. B> Type DISK at the A prompt. C> At the 'FDISK Options' screen (the first screen), choose option number 3 (Delete DOS partition). D> At the 'Delete DOS Partition' screen, choose option number 1 (Delete Primary DOS partition) E> After the partition has been deleted, FDISK will prompt you to press ESC to return to FDISK options. Press the ESCAPE key. F> Back at the 'FDISK Options' screen, press the ESCAPE key to return to DOS. The computer will prompt you to insert DOS disk and press any key when ready... The computer will then REBOOT. Skip PROCEDURE 2 and go to PROCEDURE 3. PROCEDURE 2: A> BOOT computer with DOS system disk in drive A. Go to procedure 3. PROCEDURE 3: A> Type FDISK at the A prompt. B> At the 'FDISK Options' screen (the first screen), choose option number 1 (Create DOS partition). C> At the next screen choose option number 1 (Create Primary DOS partition) D> At the 'Create Primary DOS partition' screen, FDISK will ask you if you wish to use the maximum size for a dos partition and make the DOS partition active. Answer 'Y' for yes. E> The computer will now prompt you to insert your dos disk and press any key to REBOOT... The computer will then REBOOT F> Type FDISK at the A prompt. G> At the 'FDISK Options' screen, choose option number 1 (Create DOS partition). H> At the next screen choose option number 2 (Create Extended DOS partition) I> At the 'Create Extended DOS partition' screen, it will ask you to enter partition size, accept the default size (simply press enter). J> You will get message 'Extended DOS partition created,' press ESCAPE. K> The next screen will say 'No logical drives defined.' FDISK will ask you to enter logical drive size, accept the default size (simply press enter). L> FDISK will give these messages: All available space in the Extended DOS partition is assigned to logical drives. Logical DOS drive created, drive letters changed or added Press ESC to return to FDISK Options Press the ESCAPE key. M> At the 'FDISK Options' screen, press ESCAPE to return to DOS. N> The computer will now prompt you to insert your dos disk and press any key to REBOOT... The computer will then REBOOT. Go to PROCEDURE 4. PROCEDURE 4: A> After booting the computer with the DOS disk, you will have to format both C and E drives (D drive is the built in ROM now). At the A prompt, type 'FORMAT C: /S' and press enter. The computer will give you a warning that all data on the drive will be lost and ask if you want to continue. Answer 'Y' for yes. This will format the C drive and make it BOOTable by transferring the DOS system files to the ROOT directory of the C drive. B> When the computer is done formatting drive C, you will get an A prompt. Type 'FORMAT E:' and press ENTER. The computer will give you a warning that all data will be lost and ask if you want to continue. Answer 'Y' for yes. This will format drive E. (dkh-08/06/93)
