20 MB Smartdrive (250-1047) Mounting Procedures Faxback Doc. # 3066 The SmartDrive is designed for installation in Tandy 1000RL, 1000TL/2 and 1000TL/3 computers. If you do not wish to install the drive yourself, a technician at a Radio Shack Service Center can install it for you. If you want to install the drive yourself, read this entire installation section before you begin. Refer to your computer user's guide as needed. Keep the following in mind as you install the SmartDrive: * Static electricity can damage the drive. Before handling the drive, be sure to discharge static electricity from your body by touching a grounded metal object. If you have a grounding wrist strap, wear it whenever you handle the drive. * Keep the SmartDrive in its antistatic packaging until you are ready to install it. * Handle the drive by its edges. Do not touch components on the drive. * When attaching the drive to the mounting surface, tighten the screws just enough to secure the drive. Do not over-tighten them. MOUNTING PROCEDURES in a 1000TL/2 or 1000TL/3: This drive should come with the following hardware for proper installation. The Smartdrive Interconnect cable Hardware Kit (screws, rubber fittings) User Installation Guide GETTING STARTED To avoid possible electrical shock, be sure that all power to the computer is off. Disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet or power strip. Follow these steps to prepare your computer for installation: 1. After noting their locations, remove the power cord and all peripheral cables from the main unit. 2. Remove the two cover screws located on the sides of the computer cabinet. Place the screws in a safe location because you will need them to replace and secure the cover. 3. Carefully slide the cover forward staying clear of any cables, and lift the cover off the computer. Place the cover in a safe location. WHERE TO MOUNT THE DRIVE The following section explains where to 25-1047 can be mounted in these computers: 1000RL You can install the smartdrive in the left 3 1/2 inch drive bay with no special adaptors needed. See method number 1. 1000 TL/2 You can install the smartdrive in one of two locations in your or computer. If you have only one 3 1/2 floppy drive, you can 1000 TL/3 install the smartdrive in the second location for a 3 1/2 inch diskette drive. Just to the left of the first diskette drive, see method number 2. If you have you have two 3 1/2 or two 3 1/2 and a 5 1/4 drive, you can mount the drive in a special location between the 5 1/4 bay and the speaker in the chassis. This mount requires a special adaptor bracket (# MB-0109) available from Tandy National Parts. See method number 3. METHOD 1> INSTALLING THE DRIVE IN A TANDY 1000RL To install the drive in the drive mount of a Tandy 1000RL: 1. Turn off the computer, and disconnect the power cords and the data cables from the back of the computer. 3. Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws that attach the drive mount to the computer. Remove the drive mount from the computer. 4. Attach the SmartDrive to the drive mount as directed in your computer user's guide. 5. Use the two screws you removed in Step 3 to attach the drive mount and the SmartDrive in the computer. 6. Attach the SmartDrive data cable and power cable as described in "Attaching the Cables." METHOD 2> INSTALLING THE DRIVE IN THE LEFT 3.5 DRIVE BAY IN THE 1000TL/2 OR 1000TL/3. 1. Turn off the computer, and disconnect the power cords and the data cables from the back of the computer. 2. Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws that attach the drive mount to the computer. Remove the drive mount from the computer. Save the screws for use with the new mounting bracket. 3. Using the four screws included with the SmartDrive, attach the SmartDrive to the mounting bracket included with it. 4. Use the two screws you removed in Step 3 to attach the mounting bracket and the SmartDrive in the computer. 5. Attach the SmartDrive data cable and power cable as described in "Attaching the Cables." METHOD 3> SPECIAL LOCATION INSTALL (unit has one 5.25 and two 3.5 floppies): This install requires special adaptor bracket MB-0109 and will install between left 3.5 floppy drive bay and the speaker (cut in chassis). One of the Interconnect cable's connectors has a keyed hole. Plug this connector into the SmartDrive, matching the SmartDrive's missing pin on J2 with the keyed hole on the connector. Connect the interconnect cable's other connector to J7 on the computer's main logic board. NOTE: The connector on the cable will only plug into J7 one way due to the polarizing tab (curved edge) on the connector. Locate the spare computer power cable (4 wire with white connector) and connect it to J1 on the SmartDrive. Inspect the installation, making sure all cables are properly installed and will not interfere with the replacement of the computer cover (keep cables between power supply and floppy drive bay away from top of unit). Proceed to "4> REPLACING THE COVER" ATTACHING THE CABLES 1. Align Pin 1 of the data cable with Pin 1 of the connector on the back of the SmartDrive. Pin 1 of the cable is indicated by a colored stripe. Pin 1 of the connector on the SmartDrive is shown in the following diagram. Connect one end of the data cable to the SmartDrive. 2. Align Pin 1 of the other end of the data cable with Pin 1 of the SmartDrive connector on the main logic board. (Refer to the computer user's guide to locate Pin 1 on the main logic board.) Connect the data cable to the main logic board. 3. Locate the power supply in your computer. (Refer to your computer user's guide.) Attach a power cable is designed so that it fits only when Pin 1 of the cable and Pin 1 of the power connector are aligned. Proceed to "4> REPLACING THE COVER" 4> REPLACING THE COVER Once you have installed your SmartDrive, you need to replace the computer's cover. To replace the cover: 1. Place the cover's back opening over the computer and carefully slide the cover onto the computer, taking care to stay clear of all cables. 2. Reinstall the cover mounting screws. 3. Reattach all peripheral cables and the power cord to the back of the computer. The hardware installation is now complete. You can now proceed to "Initializing the SmartDrive" for instructions on initializing the SmartDrive. (dkh-08/06/93)
