Fax Modem (250-3581) The Configuration Options Faxback Doc. # 3133 To open the Configuration Menu, press [F6] from the Main Menu. CREATING A DEFAULT COVER PAGE To save you the time and effort of re-entering the same information each time you send a cover page with your fax, BitFax lets you create a default cover page. For example, you can enter your name, fax number, and voice number. To open the cover Page Editor Menu, press [F7]. In the Logo File field, you can enter the name of the logo or graphic you want to appear atop each cover page. The file can be one of the following types: DCX, IMG, PCX, TIFF, TIFF bilevel, and TIFF class F. If the logo is not in the BitFax subdirectory, specify the file's full path (i.e., C:\GRAPHIC\LOGO.PCX). BitFax automatically fills the To and Date fields. The date is set by the computers clock. The To field is automatically filled with information extracted from the Phone Book record(s) you selected. The Message field is the only field you will probably need to change regularly, so you will probably want to leave it blank. CHANGING SERIAL PORT INTERRUPTS You might have a problem using COM 3 and COM 4 if you are already using COM 1 and COM 2, since these COM ports share the same interrupt request (IRQ) lines. Some modem and serial card manufactures have addressed this limitation by allowing you to change the IRQ line for a particular COM port. For example, you could configure your internal modem to use IRQ 2 when set to COM 3. This lets you configure your mouse to COM 1 and your modem to COM 3, (Consult your modem's user manual on how to change your modem or serial port's IRQ settings. This usually involves removing your internal modem or serial card and changing jumper switches). Once you have changed the default IRQ line of your modem or the serial card to which your modem is connected, you need to tell BitFax which IRQ line your modem will be using. To do so, open the COM Port Setting Menu by pressing [F4] in the Main Configuration Menu. In the IRQ field of the COM port you want to change, use the left or right arrow key to choose from IRQ 2 to IRQ 5. If you have also changed the I/O address that your modem will use, enter the new address in the Address field. Press [F10] to save your changes and [F9] to save the changes for the current session only. NOTE: Before changing these settings, you must also change the IRQ setting of your modem or serial card. Not all serial cards and internal modems let you change the IRQ setting. COMPANY HEADING The line of text you enter here will appear atop of each fax page you send. For example, you can enter your company name and fax number. You can enter up to 35 characters in this field. DIALING PREFIX In this field, you can enter standard Hayes commands, which BitFax will send to your modem before it dials the fax number. For example, if you want your modem to wait 60 seconds after you dial before hanging up, you can add the command "ATS7=60". Consult your modem's manual for information about the commands it supports. If the command you enter here conflict with the settings in the Dial Type or Modem Speaker fields, BitFax will use the commands in the Dial Prefix field. Only enter Hayes commands if you are familiar with the AT Hayes command set. If you enter invalid commands, your modem and BitFax might not work properly. NOTE: The Dial Prefix, Long Distance Access Code and the Phone Number fields cannot add up to more than 40 characters. COMMUNICATION PORT This field should be set to the COM port of your modem. Most modems are configured to COM 2. To change this field, press left or right arrow key. The choices are COM 1, COM 2, COM 3 and COM 4. DIAL TYPE If you are using a pulse (rotary) phone line, select the Pulse option. Most phone lines, however, use tone (push-button) dialing. The default is TONE. MODEM SPEAKER The default setting, CONNECT OFF, tells BitFax to use the modems speaker only while it make a connection with another fax system. After BitFax makes a connection, it will turn off the speaker. When set to SPEAKER ON, the speaker will be on during the whole communication session. To turn off the speaker, select SPEAKER OFF. COMMA (,) PAUSE TIME In this field, enter the number of seconds a pause will last. A comma represents a pause, as in 9, 269-7614. The default is two seconds. BUSY REDIAL COUNT In this field, enter the number of times BitFax will redial a number if a line is busy. BUSY REDIAL INTERVAL In this field, enter the number of minutes BitFax will wait before redialing a busy phone number. We suggest not setting lower than two minutes. DBF WORKING DIRECTORY This field specifies the path of your Phone Book database file (FAXBOOK.DBF). If you are using the Phone Book file in the BitFax subdirectory, leave this field blank. If, however, you moved you Phone Book file into another directory, you would enter it's full path name. For example, if your phone book is in your DATA directory, you would enter: C:\DATA\ COVER PAGE FILE NAME In this field, enter the name of the cover page file you want to use. The cover page file that BitFax creates and uses will have the file name specified in this field. This option is useful if you want to use two or more cover pages. For example, you may use COVERPGE.1 when sending business faxes and COVERPGE.2 when sending person faxes. WORD PROCESSOR TYPE BitFax can send formatted documents created by certain word processors. In this field, choose which word processor you most often use to create your fax messages. Then when you want to send a document created by that word processor, BitFax lets you send it directly. You will not have to first convert it into an ASCII (text-only) file. Use your left or right arrow key to toggle through the choices: Plain Text, WordPerfect 5.1, MS-Word 5.0 and WordStar 2.2x -4.0 (Additional choices might have been added since this manual was printed). NOTE: When BitFax sends a formatted document created by one of the supported word processors, it first converts it into an ASCII (text-only) file. In the process, BitFax strips the document of any formatting, such as underlined words, different sized fonts, etc. To retain most of a document's formatting, use the Print capture utility. PREVIEW When this field is set to YES (the default), BitFax lets you view a fax before sending it. The fax will appear on your screen exactly as it will to the recipient. When set to NO, BitFax will not preview faxes. SAVE FAX FILE Before BitFax sends a file, it first converts it into it's own BFX format. If this field is set to YES (The default), BitFax will save this converted file after sending it, giving it the extension .BFX. If set to NO, BitFax will not save the generated fax file. If you often resend faxes, this option can save you time because BitFax will not have to convert the file into the BFX format before sending it again. RECEIVE DIRECTORY In this field, you can enter the directory to which BitFax saves received fax files, for example, C:\RECFILES. If you specified your receive directory with the SET environment command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, BitFax ignores this field. If you leave this field blank and do not specify a receive directory with the SET environment command, BitFax saves received fax files in the BitFax directory. PRINTER PORT In this field, you can change the port to which your printer is connected. Most printers use LPT1. Use the right or left arrow keys to choose LPT1. LPT2. or LPT3. PRINTER TYPE In this field, choose the kind of printer you are using. Use the left or right arrow keys to choose. You can also choose a drive driver that is compatible. AUTO PRINT FAX When set to YES, BitFax will automatically print your faxes. Like a fax machine, when BitFax receives a fax, it sends a copy to your printer. ALARM MESSAGE When set to YES, BitFax notifies you when it receives a fax with a message in the upper-right corner of the screen, even if you are in another program. NOTE: This message will not appear while you are using a graphics-based application. ANSWER RING NUMBER In this field, you can enter the number of rings. BitFax waits before answering a call. The range is one to nine rings. ANSWER MODE In this field, you can tell BitFax which kind of calls to take. BitFax can answer just data calls, just fax calls, both or none. You can also place BitFax in Manual Answer mode, which is useful if you have a phone connected to your modem. NOTE: Some modems cannot differentiate between data and fax calls, and most modems treat voice calls as fax calls. Before changing the answer mode, check your modem's capabilities in it's user's manual. Continued on Faxback Document # 3134 (SMC-04/07/94)
