Fax Modem (250-3581) The Configuration Options Part 2 Faxback Doc. # 3134 Continued from Faxback Doc. # 3133 FAX ANSWER ONLY When selected, BitFax will only answer fax calls and hang up if it receives a data call. DATA ANSWER ONLY When selected, BitFax will only answer data calls and hang-up if it receives a fax call. Select this option only if your are running a communication program in the foreground in host mode, such as BitCom. FAX/DATA This option tells BitFax to answer both fax and data calls. If you receive a data call, BitFax "transfers" the call to the currently running communication software, such as BitCom Deluxe. See "Receiving Data and Fax Files" before using this option. MANUAL ANSWER This option is useful if you have a phone connected to your modem. When selected, BitFax lets you manually answer a fax call. For example, when your phone rings, you can answer the call before RecvFax does. (In the Answer Ring Number field, you can set the number of rings RecvFax waits before answering a call). When you are ready to receive a fax, press [Alt-Ctrl-X] and RecvFax will take over. You can then hang-up the phone. To stop receiving a fax, press [Esc]. NO ANSWER Only select this option if you want to temporarily disable RecvFax. When selected, RecvFax will not answer any calls. THE ADVANCED CONFIGURATION MENU This section explains the options in the Advanced Configuration Menu. To open the Advanced Configuration Menu, press [F5] from the configuration Menu. FAX SPEED This field is normally set to the speed (baud rate) at which your fax modem can send and receive fax data. When communicating with a slower modem, BitFax will automatically lower its baud rate. If you are having problems sending a fax because of a poor connection, you can use this option to force your modem to transmit at a lower baud rate. FAX RESOLUTION You can choose either Normal or Fine. Normal resolution sends faxes at 100 x 200 dpi (dots per inch), and fine resolution sends faxes at 200 x 200 dpi. Fine resolution faxes take longer to send and use twice as much disk space, but produce clearer graphics and crisper text. When sending charts and graphs, use fine resolution to help preserve the integrity of the fax image. NOTE: The Fax Resolution setting does not determine the resolution of faxes that you receive. SENDER FAX ID BitFax sends the text you enter in this field as a fax ID, which appears in the LCD screen or transmission report of the remote fax machine. You can enter up to 20 characters. This field is not the same as the Company Heading field of the Main Configuration Menu. NOTE: Not all fax machines and modems can send or receive a remote fax ID. Some modems require an extra memory chip. PAGE LENGTH This field lets you specify the length of the fax page. If you enter 11 inches, for example, each page you send will be 11 inches long. The default length of zero inches tells BitFax to cut the page after it has sent the last line of the document or after 60 lines of text, whichever comes first. The page length only applies to the text files. It does not apply to graphic files or files created with Print Capture. So if you send a graphic file, BitFax will ignore the specified page length. If you include a graphic in your document, BitFax will still insert a page break after every 60 lines of text, but it will not cut off a graphic. So, for example, if a graphic appears on the 54th line and it takes 20 lines, BitFax will insert a page break at the 74th line. BitFax handles combined, or "tagged", files a little differently. When Page Length is set to 0, BitFax will still insert a page break, but only within each "tagged" file. So, if you tag seven files together and each is less than 60 lines BitFax will not insert any page breaks. However, if you tag a file that is longer than 60 lines, BitFax will insert a page break within that file. For example, if you tag a file that is 74 lines, a page break will appear on the 60th line of that file. FONT FILE In this field, you can select the font BitFax will use. Your selection depends on the fax resolution. At normal resolution, the choices are Courier Roman Fixed 10.0 (Normal), Letter Gothic 12.0 (Normal), and BitStream Swiss 12.0 (Normal). At fine resolution, they are BitStream Courier 10.0 and BitStream Courier Fixed 10.0 (Fine). Fonts are either proportionally spaces or fixed spaced. The width of proportional fonts varies with the size of each character. For example, an uppercase "W" is wider than a lowercase "i". The width of fixed-font characters, however, does not vary. A lowercase "i" is as wide as an uppercase "W". Courier Roman Fixed and BitStream Courier Fixed and fixed spaced fonts. NOTE: Use fixed-spaced fonts when faxing documents with columns of text or lines. If you use a variable font, columns might appear shifted when you fax the document. (Additional fonts are available from BIT Software Inc.). LEFT MARGIN In this field, you can widen the left margin. BitFax adds to the margin the number of inches you enter. NOTE: You can add only to the margin of text, not to graphics. TAB STOP In this field, you can specify the number of spaces BitFax will assign to each tab character. This option is useful when sending formatted documents. When BitFax converts a document into the stripped-down ASCII format, it substitutes tab characters with the number of spaces you enter here. OUTSIDE LINE ACCESS # In this field, enter any special numbers you have to dial to get an outside line. For example, if you have to dial a nine and then wait for a dial tone, enter: 9, When you send a fax, BitFax automatically dials a nine and then waits two seconds before dialing the fax number. The comma stands for a two-second pause. LONG DISTANCE ACCESS CODE In this field, enter the access code of your long-distance phone company. For example, if you use AT&T, you would enter 102880. NOTE: This field, the Dial Prefix field, and the Phone Number field cannot add up to a total of more than 40 characters. CREDIT CARD # If you want to charge your fax calls to a long-distance credit card, you can enter your authorization number in this field. For example: AT&T - If you use AT&T, your credit card number should be preceded by three commas (a six-second pause), e.g., ",,, 0000 00000 0000." The long pause is necessary because BitFax has to wait for an access tone. US SPRINT - If you use US Sprint, your authorization number should be preceded by a "W" (e.g., W 0000 000000 0000). The "W" tells your modem to wait for an access tone. You can enter up to 30 characters. USE CREDIT CARD # When set to YES, BitFax automatically dials your long-distance access code and your credit card number. NOTE: When dialing manually, BitFax will not dial these numbers. BitFax only dials these numbers when you use the Phone Book to address faxes. FILES LOCATION This field is useful if you frequently send files from a particular directory. If you typically send files from more than one directory, leave this field blank. When you open the File Selection Menu from the Main Menu, BitFax normally lists the files in the BitFax directory. If you specify a different directory in this field, BitFax lists those files in that directory instead. For example, if you enter: C:\LETTERS BitFax will list the files in the directory LETTERS. Be sure to include the directory's full path name. EDITOR NAME In this field, you can specify which text editor or word processor BitFax will open when you press the Editor Command, [F7], from the Main Menu. For example, if you use WordStar and it was in the directory WORDSTAR, you might enter: C:\WORDSTAR\WS.EXE Be sure to enter the full path name of the editor's directory and the command that opens the editor. If you leave this field blank, BitFax will use it's own editor. NOTE: If you do not have enough memory, BitFax cannot open the editor. PRINTER RESET CODE Only use this field if you are having trouble printing a fax. In this field, enter the escape sequence or command code (in decimal form) to reset your printer. See your printer's manual for the proper escape sequence. INPUT RESOLUTION This field lets you specify the resolution of a graphic file you are faxing. By matching the input resolution of the graphic image, BitFax will know the graphic's relative dimensions, which helps prevent graphic images from being stretched or distorted (for example, a circle coming out as an oval). The default is 130 x 100 dpi. The range is from 75 x 75 dpi to 600 x 600 dpi. Enter the resolution of the original graphic image. For example, if the image was created with a scanner at 400 x 400 dpi, you would enter "400 x 400". SCALING FACTOR You can enlarge or reduce the size of a graphic image by entering a number from 0.3 to 5. The number represents how much BitFax will magnify or reduce a graphic. For example, if you entered 5, BitFax would enlarge the graphic by 500 percent. If you entered 0.3, BitFax would shrink the image to 30 percent of its original size. GRAPHIC ADAPTER You do not normally need to change this field. BitFax automatically determines the type of monitor and graphic video card you are using. If, however, you are using an auto-sensing card, such as Paradise or ATI, you might have to adjust this field to match your monitor. (SMC/all-07/05/94)
