WinMate Tandy 3200 (250-1633) Using WinMate Faxback Doc. # 3199 USING WINMATE From the main desktop, you can move to other desktops, and from these you can open applications. You move from one screen to another and perform other operations by clicking or double-clicking your mouse on any of several controls. Doors: Located in the middle of the main desktop. Double- clicking on these takes you to the various desktops. Each desktop contains a category of WinMate applications. For instance, In Play contains two games, Solitaire and Minesweeper. Task Bar Located along the right edge of each desktop or application screen. This bar presents icons you can click on to choose common tasks quickly. Navigation bar: Located at the bottom of each desktop or application screen. This bar provides the following features: -Finish icon: Exits the current application. -Clue area: Presents brief information. Pressing and then moving the cursor around the screen gives you information about the different screen elements. -Identify icon: Changes the current WinMate user. -Pause icon: Switches to another application without closing the current application. Menu bar: Located near the top of each desktop or application screen. This bar displays the names of menus from which you can select commands. Opening Doors The WinMate applications are organized into categories. You can select among the categories by using your mouse to double-click on a door in the main desktop. Once you have double-clicked on a door, a new desktop displays icons that represent applications you can use. To start any applications, double-click on its icon. For example, if you double-click on the In Play door, you see this second desktop: To return to the main desktop, click on the Home icon. Using the Menus Each WinMate screen has a menu bar. The menu bar provides commands that apply to applications and views. For example, here is the menu bar from the main desktop: File View Help To open a menu on this menu bar, position the mouse pointer over one of the menu names, and click. The menu opens. Here is what the File menu looks like: Install... Run... Run Program Manager Check Desktop as Shell Exit Windows What you see is a list of commands. These commands help you complete specific tasks. Some menu commands may be shadowed. A shadowed command cannot be used right now. To select a command from the menu, point to the command you want to select and click. The command is then performed. If you need help, use the Help menu that appears on the menu bar in many applications. If you want to close a menu without selecting a command, click anywhere outside the menu box. Using Dialog Boxes Sometimes when you select a command, some additional information is needed before the command can be executed. When more information is needed, a dialog box appears on the screen. A dialog box enables you to provide the application additional information. Here is an example of a dialog box. This dialog box appears when you choose the Run command from the File menu shown earlier. Some boxes, like this one, have edit fields where you type information. By pointing to the box and clicking, you can move the cursor to the field so you can begin typing. Sometimes the dialog box includes buttons that gives you additional choices or information. Sometimes you will see this arrow icon:down arrow. Clicking on this icon displays a box of selections from which you can choose. To choose a selection, point to it and click. You will also see check boxes in dialog boxes. These boxes are next to options that you can choose. When you click on a check box, a check (or x) appears. This indicates that the option is on. To turn off (or unselect) one of these options, click on it again, and the mark disappears. If there are more selections in a box than you can see at one time, you will see a scroll bar with these arrow icons: Down arrow up arrow. Clicking on one of these arrows lets you scroll through the additional selections in the box so you can choose one. When you finish adding information to a dialog box, click on OK or Close. The application then performs the command you selected from the menu. If you want to exit a dialog box without performing the command you selected, click on Cancel. If you have questions about a dialog box, click on Help to get additional information. USING the Task Bar Each WinMate screen has a task bar along the right side. This bar contains icons on which you can click to choose the most common menu tasks quickly. Some of the icons you will commonly see include the following. Design: Click on this icon to display screen. You can activate the design screen in any desktop. You use the screen to customize the design of a desktop. Home: Click on this icon to go to your home desktop. By default, the main desktop is home. You can reset the default by going to a different desktop (such as In Play) selecting Home View from the View menu, and clicking on Set. Exit: Click on this icon to exit from the design screen and return to the Main desktop. (LB/all-09/29/94)
