MMS-20 (250-1109) Installation Faxback Doc. # 3303 The Radio Shack MMS-20 Multimedia Amplified Speaker System with 5-Band Equalizer has been specifically designed to enhance your computer's audio. You can set the MMS-20 to automatically mix your computer's audio with an additional audio source, or to switch between two sources so you can create custom presentations. The 5-band equalizer helps you customize the sound. The MMS-20 features two tweeters and one woofer to provide excellent sound, and its wide frequency response makes it great for voice or music. You can connect a pair of optional stereo speakers to enhance the sound, or you can connect a pair of optional stereo headphones to listen in privacy. SETTING UP You can place the MMS-20 between your computer's CPU and monitor. The MMS-20 safely supports up to 50 pounds, and its rubber feet hold it in place without slipping. CONNECTING TO SOUND SOURCES AND POWER Depending on your computer's output jacks, you need either a shielded audio cable (Radio Shack Cat. No. 42-2351) or a Y-cable (Cat. No. 42-2475) to connect the MMS-20. For assistance in selecting the correct cable, consult your local Radio Shack store or participating dealer. Note: We recommend that you connect your MMS-20 to your computer's line level output jacks, if available. Follow these steps to connect the MMS-20 to your computer, to an additional audio source, and to power. Caution: Before you begin, be sure to turn off the power to all your computer's components. Note: If you are connecting an additional audio source, you will need an appropriate cable. 1. Plug the audio cable's left channel plug into the MMS-20's INPUT A, L terminal. Then plug the audio cable's right channel plug into the MMS-20's INPUT A, R terminal. 2. Plug the audio cable's other end into your computer's stereo output jack. 3. If you want to connect an additional audio source, plug the left and right channel plugs of an additional audio cable into the MMS-20's INPUT B, R and L terminals. Connect the audio cable's other end to the audio source. Note: Adding an auxiliary audio source lets you mix sound from two sources, such as a CD player and a CD ROM voice presentation. If you are using a computer with enhanced sound, you can connect both your computer's sound board and a music card. 4. Plug the power cord into a standard AC outlet or approved power strip. CONNECTING EXTERNAL SPEAKERS You can connect a pair of 8-ohm or 4-ohm external speakers to the MMS-20. Notes: We recommend that you use the shortest length of speaker wire possible. For the best overall performance, be sure that your speaker wires are properly connected according to their polarity (+ to + and - to -). Follow these steps to connect external speakers to the MMS-20. 1. Split apart 4 inches of the speaker wire. 2. Remove about 1 inch of insulation from each wire's end, then twist the exposed wire to secure all of the wire strands. 3. Press and hold the EXTERNAL SPEAKER 4 ohm OR 8 ohm R's negative (-) terminal tab and insert the right speaker's negative (-) wire into the opening. Then release the tab. 4. Press and hold the EXTERNAL SPEAKER 4 ohm OR 8 ohm R's positive (+) terminal tab and insert the right speaker's positive (+) wire into the opening. Then release the tab. 5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to connect the left speaker's wires. CONNECTING HEADPHONES You can connect a pair of stereo headphones with a 1/8-inch plug (not included) to the MMS-20 to listen in privacy. Your local Radio Shack store carries a wide selection of stereo headphones. To connect headphones, insert the 1/8-inch plug into the speaker system's jack. Note: Connecting headphones automatically disconnects the built-in and external speakers. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. (br/all-11/3/94)
