CD-3200 Player (420-5011) Power Sources Faxback Doc. # 3494 Your CD-3200 can be powered by: Six AA alkaline batteries Standard household AC, using an Archer AC adapter (Cat. No. 273- 1651A). Your vehicle battery, using an Archer DC Auto Adapter (Cat. No. 270- 1562). INTERNAL BATTERY OPERATION You can operate your CD-3200 by using six AA batteries, alkaline or rechargeable nickel-cadmium. WARNING: You must use all alkaline batteries or all nickel-cadmium batteries. Do not mix these two types of batteries. If you mix them, you might cause them to explode. Installing Batteries 1. Slide off the battery compartment cover. 2. Install six AA batteries, observing polarity (+ and -) as shown above the battery compartment. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. Replace the batteries when the display becomes dim. You can operate your player approximately 4 hours on a set of alkaline batteries. CAUTION: Never leave weak or dead batteries in the player. they can leak damaging chemicals. If you do not plan to use the player for a month or more, remove the batteries. Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries The CD-3200 has a built-in charging circuit that lets you recharge nickel- cadmium batteries while they are in the unit. To recharge your batteries, proceed as follows: 1. Set the CD-3200's POWER ON/OFF switch to CHG. 2. Set the CHG/OFF switch to CHG. 3. Connect an Archer AC adapter (Cat. No. 273-1651A) to the CD-3200's DC 9V jack. Set the adapter's green tip to negative. See the instructions supplied with the adapter. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard household AC outlet. WARNING: Set the CHG/OFF switch to CHG only when charging nickel-cadmium batteries. Be sure it is set to off when using standard, alkaline, or any non-rechargeable batteries. You must leave the CD-3200's POWER ON/OFF switch in the OFF position while you are charging batteries in the unit. If you set this switch to ON, the unit will work, but the batteries will not charge. If you use alkaline batteries, you must leave the CHG/OFF switch in the OFF position at all times. Failure to do this can cause the batteries to overheat and explode. Charging Tips Rechargeable lead-acid batteries, such as your car battery, work better and last longer when you keep them fully charged all the time. However, nickel-cadmium batteries react in the opposite way. They last longer and deliver more power if you occasionally let them fully discharge. To do this, simply play the CD-3200 continuously until the CD music sounds too slow. Then, fully recharge the batteries. If you do not fully discharge nickel-cadmium batteries occasionally, they "forget" how much power they can deliver. For example, they might deliver only 10 to 20 percent capacity. NOTE: Fully discharge batteries need 8 to 9 hours to recharge. AC POWER OPERATION You can operate your CD-3200 from standard household AC, using the Archer AC adapter (Cat. No. 273-1651A). 1. Attach the adapter's green plug with the tip set to negative. (See the instructions supplied with the adapter.) 2. Insert the plug into the DC 9V jack. 3. Be sure that the CHG/OFF switch is set to OFF. 4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet. 5. Set the CD-3200's POWER ON/OFF switch to ON. NOTE: When you plug in the AC adapter, the CD-3200's batteries are internally disconnected. VEHICLE BATTERY OPERATION You can power your CD-3200 from the battery in your vehicle using DC power adapter (Cat. No. 270-1562). Be sure to use the correct power tip and to select the correct voltage as follows. CAUTION: Use this adapter and CD-3200 only with vehicles that have a 12- volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of electrical system. If you are not sure about your vehicle, contact the vehicle dealer. 1. Set the center tip of the adapter's blue-tipped connector to negative. (See the instructions supplied with the adapter). 2. Set the switch on the adapter to 9 Volts DC. 3. Insert the plug into the CD-3200's DC 9V jack on the side panel. 4. Be sure that the CHG/OFF switch is set to OFF. 5. Plug the other end of the adapter into the cigarette lighter socket. The red indicator on the adapter case lights. 6. Set the CD-3200's POWER ON/OFF switch to ON. NOTES: Always disconnect the adapter from the cigarette lighter socket first. If you do not, a harmful short circuit can occur that can damage the adapter or the vehicle's electrical system. Do not leave the adapter connected to the cigarette lighter socket or to the CD-3200 when you are not using the CD-3200. Use only the suggested DC power adapter. CAUTION: When your vehicle is parked in the sun, temperatures inside can easily reach levels that might damage your CD-3200 and your discs. To avoid heat damage, remove both player and discs from vehicle when leaving it. (ALL-12/08/94)
